I kinda slipped and agreed to One More Week / One More Hour: My last day would have been Friday, but Manager was hesitant about something or other. I agreed to go in on Wednesday next week to finish administrative stuff, and answer any questions that came up while I was gone from the person I trained (there won't be any questions). Wednesday is officially my last day and paperwork is done, so I can't OMD after that. Also we're homeless the Sunday after that.

My wife is more awesome, her last day was supposed to be last Friday, but she decided she had too much and took the Friday as a vacation day, so she was done last Thursday.

And I'm done.

Ended on more of a whimper than a bang, kind of anti climatic, but it is a nice feeling. Even though Friday was more or less my last day, feel much more final walking out today.

Congrats. How you ended the day will matter less over time than what you do with all that freedom afterward. Enjoy!

Okay I'm home now from my round the country motorcycle trip and ready to start my retirement from my home base. I've had a lot of time to think about this and am very excited. Keep up the good work classmates (i.e., keep the graduations coming).

Really quite interesting to me, and although I planned and planned and envisioned, the actual fact that I can do just about anything I want is incredible (for lack of a better term). So much flexibility in choosing what I want to do. For example, I had three friends (who all still work) want to get together and I dropped everything and said yes to all three (one Friday evening, one Saturday morning, and one Sunday afternoon) because they go to work tomorrow (Monday). Normally, I would get together with maybe one and still look at the clock to see if I had enough time to get home and get stuff done. Now I just say that I can do what I was going to do today, but shift it to Monday (work on clearing the fence line so I can have a new fence installed Wednesday). I would have normally worked both Saturday and Sunday on that.

I'll tell you something else that just happened though and that is after such a long and fantastic trip where you go and do anything and everything you want, to come back to people who are very involved and stuck in their drama is hard. I may actually not see the one couple anymore because of the heaviness and negativity. I have said something in the past, but they just cannot let the bad stuff go. When I asked to calm stuff a little and just take a breath one of them just poured it on heavier. The world seems to be coming to an end and they wanted me to feel it (I of course disagree, but you probably already guessed that).

So, be aware of these types of contrasts (it of course doesn't have to be retirement vs. working). Thankfully though I feel as I have control of what I do and who I spend time with.

It feels like a time of opportunities, adjustments, and reinvention. I love it!

Cool chart CanuckExpat!  I was 49 for the record.

I turned 50 this week and as I blew out my birthday candle and was telling my friend how my life was 'an exploding volcano of awesomeness', he (at 67 with years of work to go) said, "I wish I could be you!"
I was SO HAPPY to be me!

Fair warning, sometime later I might steal this post from Class of 2015, if you want to start working on your homework :)

I think I'm missing the OP in the table, but from what I gather s/he is off enjoying the world

Well, it looks like the system forces me to to retire as close to the end of the month as possible or deal with financial penalties because of the way it is set up. So I've moved the date back by 3 days to December 31 and I'm back in Class of 2016. I think actually that I'm just going to stay in both classes, straddling the line, and enjoying the people.

I'm so very, very ready to start my new life that I am counting the days until December 31. I am also nervous about the finances, which have not gone as well as usual this year. We had a lot of off-normal expenses. I hope that we got most of these out of the way this year

Metta I excited for you! Just keep plugging away at the numbers and you'll feel better. It is a ig step, but for most people if you actually make a mistake you can always go back. I love it out here and don't want my old job back though, that is for sure!

We'll be 28 and 29 when we FIRE late this year - if all goes according to plan.

We did end up pulling the plug in mid-August this year.

Currently enjoying ourselves in the middle of a 5-6 month long campervan trip up and down the Sunshine Coast of Australia...with both kids and our dog.

FIRE really is amazing.

Congrats to all the others that made it this year!

Hello.  I was away for a while due to a medical emergency that resulted in a 6 month "sabbatical" from work. I recently returned to work on a part time basis. Thanks to my FIRE planning it is totally doable on a reduced salary. Luckily my company pays for a disability plan so I wasn't hurting financially during that time.

So it doesn't look like I am officially in the Class of 2016...although my medical sabbatical helped to reset my mind a litttle. I'm just soaking it all in and waiting to make any major decisions for now. Part time is tolerable for the time being.

And to think some groups in my company were just offered voluntary buyout packages like what I've been waiting for. Of course, my department wasn't. But one can hope it may come soon.

I'm happy to read others" plans coming to fruition and congratulate all. I have a lot to catch up on in these forums.

I just recently found out I'll be a member of the Class of 2016 also!  I was told yesterday that I'd be out by 11/11.  That is barely a week and a half away!  It's at least a month earlier than I was expecting.  My company is cutting headcount to save money and I put in a request for the severance package being offered.  My original plan was to FIRE earlier this year but I kept hanging around due to one excuse or another but this severance offer was really what I was hoping for and was too good to pass up.  I've been letting this soak in for almost two months now and I think I'm ready to go.  It is scary walking away from the paycheck and benefits though!  I'm not really good with FIRE math but I think I'm going to be OK.  I'm ready.

(I may take part-time work in future for fun and side $, but I left my career job in May and worked full-time in summer in "fun" job.)

How do we edit the 2016 table to update our status? My last day prior to a year’s Long Service Leave was yesterday (Friday 11th) so my status can now show “gap year” or “sabbatical” (since most on this board don’t know what long service leave is).

I’m due back at work in Jan 2018 and I have told my colleagues that I will be showing up, but I am leaving that decision until much later next year. If I do return to work, it will likely be part time, and likely only for a year - that would put me in the class of 2019; but I still want my stake in the ground for this class of 2016 :)

Congratulations on beginning your Long Service Leave. Is it sort of a FIRE rehearsal?

Absolutely it's a trial for FIRE. I'm at FI, but not entirely comfortable -- such that going back to work for another year or two after this year off would be beneficial; but if I totally can't stand the idea of going back I will have the option not to.

That sounds great! You will have to keep us apprised.

I have 21 days left before I FIRE. I'm really looking forward to it!

My last day was the 2nd. This week has been awesome. Even though I was part-time, the freedom is exhilarating.

I may take one more (?) 4 month gig just to get enough cash for the year. If that happens, I'll be Class of 2017. For now, though, I'm in 2016.

Joining the class of 2016!

I stopped working October 19, but the boss asked me to come back in January for tax season (tax accountant). I said yes so did not feel fully FIRE'd. But I have LOVED LOVED LOVED not working, so have decided to tell the boss I am not coming back (ever!!).

I consider my time "out" as blissful. I hardly ever think of my past employ, and am enjoying every day greatly. I must say that I had certain ideas and expectations and those have panned out well, but I'm derailed at the moment.  My youngest had major knee surgery, my dad is up for a pacemaker Monday, and now mom had a heart attach (Friday) and fell, breaking her hip. She'll have heart surgery and hip surgery Monday (so dad will be on hold).

I suspected this would happen (not all the medical stuff, but the caregiving or attending to others), but I like the fact that I have the time to do what is necessary and not try and fit it all in with 50+ hours dedicated to work.

Definitely! And it means that if I am ever asked on official paperwork what date I retired, I'll remember it. The official work paperwork has my last day as Dec 31. So I truly feel like I am going to be reborn in the new year. I hope that it will be a year of joy, happiness, and prosperity for everyone!

Congratulations, Class of 2016.  Welcome to FIRE.  ROLLIN, looks like you had an awesome motorcycle trip.  I'm leaving in three weeks for a self guided motorcycle tour of Patagonia.  Have fly rod, will travel.  I'm often in the Clearwater area as I have friends there.  Maybe we could meet up some time.

I've been blissfully free of stress dreams since I retired, but for some reason, Jan 1st, I had a dream that I was supposed to be hanging an exhibit of student artwork at a big museum in Detroit, something I had to do annually. But because I hadn't been working, I had no work to show. It was horrible.

And then today, out of the blue, I get a call from a work contact who didn't know I had retired, letting me know they are having an art show next month, and they'd like me to pull something together for it, if possible!

The universe is just messing with me now.

Congratulations to all of you! I have been reading your progress and it's been so wonderful to see you all actually retire! It is very inspiring to me. I'm considering saying goodbye to my corporate job this year and taking a year off to figure out what I want to do next. It has been lovely hearing all your stories and would love to continue to hear what retired life is like for you all in 2017.

I probably said something in another thread to get confirmed.
But, yes I quit working at the business at the end of the year.
 Well almost :-)
I changed the oil in the business van, when I returned the van to
the business after the oil change I ended up working the business
for an hour while my wife went after a product she had sold.
I'm still getting up early to help with business stuff we do at home
before opening and I help empty the van when she gets home.
I caught up on the monthly paperwork, I did 9 months so far, only 3 to go.
The last two days, I've been cleaning up a little rust and painting parts of the van.
Oh, I also removed the headliner and had it recovered, then reinstalled it.
Spent several hours putting the tarp on one of the greenhouses, It's 20ft by 25ft,
so it's a bit of a chore. This morning helped my wife pick all the tangerines from the tree
as it is expected to freeze the morning after tomorrow.
I fabricated a new picker for the Pomelos, we have several pickers, but the Pomelos are
about 7" in diameter and the would not fit in the pickers we have.
I toured 4 gyms in the area, when things slow down a bit, I'm going to join
one of the two that I narrowed it down to. One is cheap, ($200 for a yr) but clean
with equipment in good shape. But, no FM on their TV's :-(
The other has a TV on every treadmill and elliptical, also clean, good repair, but
it is $456 a yr.
From another thread, I did all the laundry this week, instead of half, I told my wife to
let me do the laundry, but she always did a load before I did.
I went to breakfast with the guys Thursday morning, I got to tell them I'm retired!
They are all retires. I rarely made it to the breakfast when I was working.
Working was a lot less 'work', I got to surf, watch TV, listen to radio and walk.

I will slow down after I get caught up on the business's deferred maintenance
and get all the paperwork done for taxes.

But yes, I'm free from having to be somewhere everyday, I hope to take myself
on some experiences soon. I'll probably start with our local hiking group.

Checking in for the new year. We worked our way traveling from California to Toronto quickly, stopping at a lot of awesome free campsites (especially in the west)

Spent two months with family in Toronto then started moving south when the snow hit. Now we are in a nice cottage on folly beach right outside Charleston. We were "only" able to book this place for a week. Before one week would have seemed a nice normal length vacation, but now it seems so short.

On the not so positive side, I'm still figuring out the best way of handling spending the entire day around a very energetic toddler, when I may just want to sleep in.

Things are going very well for me!
I was in Paris from January to May - Lived in an AirBNB studio, took a French class at the Sorbonne and traveled to Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland while I was there. Also visited Glacier National Park and Seattle with my extended family in July.
I'm exercising more, eating/sleeping better, lost some weight, organized my life in some small ways and have been pretty much worry- and stress-free.
Every day is Saturday!

I won't get on about all I'm doing, but suffice it to say that 6 recent weeks traveling the country has been a pleasure. One month hiking/hanging out in the Rockies would not happen if I wasn't FIRED. Next to Asheville NC for a week and then a November bike ride from Washington DC to Ann Arbor MI to watch the UM v. OSU game.

We're on a 2 month trip around the states and we'll eventually return home to finish a construction project (a not-quite-tiny house).

I have been FIREd since November 1st.  It is hard to believe that it is almost a year already.  We have not been doing any of the travel things he other posters mention but I am still having lots of fun and have been keeping busy.

My mom is in hospice care so we do not want to travel far.  My DW is still working because she wants to and we cannot travel.  I have been helping my DW with her work (RE) and doing lots of yard work and gardening.
