Chevy Volt Battery Replacement Haggling
« on: June 18, 2021, 03:09:46 PM »
Have a 2014 Chevy volt with 80k miles.  Love it.  Battery warranty is for 100k miles or 8 yrs. I am within that. Battery has lost charge from Ave 10.7 kW capacity to 9.1 kW. I know warranty talked about replacement with significant capacity loss.  They put out all this press about how you won’t notice a reduction in capacity because the meter won’t show it to you. Battery capacity is 14 kW, but by only allowing access to 10.5 or so it was supposed to prolong life.  Since my warranty expires in September, this is my shot to try and upgrade battery.

Any advice on how to do this?  Anyone done this with a volt?  Obviously they will not just say sure bring it in. Thanks.

So your car isn't actually showing any loss of range, as in, it's working perfectly as designed?

You should look at the exact verbage of the warranty, but I'm pretty sure your battery capacity needs to be less than 70% of your rated value to qualify for replacement.

Mary Barra, CEO of GM, is fond of saying that GM has *never* done a warranty replacement of a Volt battery due to degradation.

By all means you should take it in for a battery health check before your warranty is up, but the odds of them giving you a new battery are slim to none.

Have you checked to see if all the cells are functioning properly?  You can do this with a basic app (mygreenvolt).

It’s not uncommon to have one or two cells that discharge faster than others. BUt to echo the previous poster - you seem to have a battery that is functioning well within parameters, unless i”m not understanding you correctly. I’m not sure what the problem is here…
