Cheaper alternative to ADT home security for my elderly mom?

my mom has adt.
she lives alone but in a safe neighborhood. she got it a few years ago for peace of mind when my dad died.
but i recently noticed that she's paying $70/month. :o

recommend a cheaper service?
or even an alternative to security monitoring?

Replying to follow this topic myself. I have been doing some research since I am now traveling for work and leaving wife and kids at home.

can you re-purpose the adt wireless equipment on the doors/windows?

There are alarm monitoring companies in many major markets that charge $10-$20 a month.  She may have a contract with ADT that renews automatically.  If that is the case, call them and tell them you want to cancel at the end of the contract.  They will likely offer to reduce their fee to $35-$40 if you renew.  That might be easier for her, as she is familiar with ADT.
