Canadian University offering a Free financial literacy course
« on: January 05, 2020, 09:52:51 AM »
We should teach every high school student financial literacy, but since we are not, McGill University is taking the lead. Granted, it's sponsored by a big corporate bank, but this is still a great idea.

"From budgeting to borrowing, real estate and beyond, invest a few hours in this free, online course".

Great sales and marketing initiative by the banks for sure!

I find it a little disturbing that the first topic is reasons for borrowing and kinds of debt, but it does look promising taken all together.  Non-Canadians beware of tax and other regulated info, though!

That looks like a great idea. I've sent the link to a young work colleague who lives in Canada. He made enquiries and said the next batch of modules starts in Feb, so he is going to take them.

Thanks for the link.

I did the course, I found it super basic but I can definitely see the utility for someone who isn't as well versed in personal finance. It's nice because you have the option to read transcripts or watch videos, and there are little quizzes to test your understanding along the way. Overall it's a decent course for the average person looking to learn more about personal finance.

Welcome to Canada!

Interesting comment. I'm from Canada, but have spent most of my adult life in the US, and I would have guessed that Americans carried more personal debt than Canadians. But I just googled and I'm floored by how much worse it is in Canada!

It's pretty crazy.  I think a lot of it is HELOCs.
