Can you tell me about CHIP free health insurance for children?
« on: October 25, 2015, 02:47:55 PM »
I have started poking at my state's exchange and was about ready to throw up when I saw that our already hefty premiums with a very spicy deductible will be rising a bit over 20% for next year.  The only thing softening the blow is that I expect to have much lower income for next year, certainly under 250% FPL and possibly much lower - that should qualify us for some subsidies.  In my state, FPL under 260% qualifies my two kids to be covered under CHIP (state calls it CHP+ locally).  Has anyone had kids covered under CHIP programs?  Decent coverage?  What happens if your income rises above the eligibility level part of the way through the year (i.e. am I in trouble if I get another gig that pays well?)?  Anything else I should know?

Bump.

I'm not in the range of getting CHIP, but could be in certain years depending on income fluctuations, would love to hear from anyone utilizing this.

(I suspect though that most Mustachians with kids make too much, and most people who FIRE and get their income low enough no longer have kids under 18.)
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.
