IKEA quality is variable. We have some Tunhem bookcases. Other than the paperboard back, they are absolutely fabulous and should last indefinitely (they are 13-20 years old, couldn't tell which ones are older)

Our Klippan couch is used all the time, it's also ~20 years old. Seat sags a bit now though.

I agree - there is some great ikea (and some sucky ikea). We bought a "vintage" early 90s ikea dining table from craigslist about a decade ago. It has moved three times and is still in great shape. It looks beautiful with our 1006 navy chairs. My dining room is the ultimate in high-low decorating.

I had a malm armoire only last two years.

My ektorp sofa and loveseat are coming up on 15 years old and could use new covers, but they have also made it through several moves, two young children, and a 100 pound puppy. That is some spectacular value.

I do sometimes look at my recognizably ikea living room and think "have I grown out of this" - but not worth changing it out until kids and dogs are a bit older. I do understand that desire for buy it for life furniture for sure.
