Anyone Live in or around Reno?

Looking at taking a job at the Tesla factory.   From a mustachian perspective, what things do you like and dislike about Reno?

I'm from south lake tahoe. While tahoe is a universe different than Reno I've spent enough time there to have some insight.

Things about Reno to avoid: Gambling away your paycheck, doing meth, getting your shit stolen by tweakers. Pretty shitty public schools. Fairly car dependent. Not a lot of what you'd call culture.

Things to like about Reno: No income tax, relatively affordable housing, MASSIVE amount of outdoor activities not that far away. SOME economic diversity. Sunshine almost year round (but snow in winter of course), a decent university if you care about that. Pretty laid back people.

In terms of working at the Tesla factory, I'd just have a backup plan. Musk is great at getting people to give him money, and those cars are cool. But that company, I don't understand how they keep the lights on, haha! Good news is you can always hit up a dealer school and get a decent paying gig throwing cards at drunks.

Lived there before. Might be moving back soon.
Good: Low tax rates compared to almost anywhere else, things never close ever every store and restaurant is open 24/7 and people are in them, sunny, what I would call a moderate and reasonable political atmosphere
Bad: housing is not that affordable anymore, some parts including Tesla are very car dependent, dry enough to make growing things a little hard, is the economy really diversified now or will there be round 2?, stuck between California and nothing for a long long way

I like the cheap food. Beyond that, not much more there to offer. We live 1 hr away.

You may want to live in Chilcoot or Portola, Ca and commute.

The Rocklin Tesla employees seem very very happy when we were there 3 yrs ago getting a new Tesla

My 90 something year old FIL was not fit to drive. They kindly delayed making a new key for him.

Smart people. His caregiver stole his key, thank goodness.

Rocklin Tesla seems like a wonderful place to work.

Congratulations on your new job!!

I mean, paying an extra ten percent in taxes plus a 90 minute commute each way sounds appealing... but...

Car dependent you say?   Just for fun, my current town is Greer SC, very car dependent.     Someone has frightened me with all the talk of Meth and tweakers!!   What about the age and social scene?  I dont want to be rolling around Reno and everyone is a pensioner pitifully gambling away their everything....      Some attractive ladies wouldnt hurt also lol...

Chilcoot is 38 min from Reno per map quest. Portola is 57 min.
Chilcoot has very few people so unless you are outdoorsy and want to fish or live near the lake, it isn't as appealing
Reno isn't full of methheads. If so, there are still plenty of normal people there. I've visited there all my life and now live closer than ever. My reservation would be the heat, and the ugly desert. Not to mention much of it just isn't pretty. But for someone in their 20's- early 30's, it has more entertainment.
My 27 year old son lived in Rocklin near the Tesla plant. He loved his social life, many younger people out there.

You won't be biking or hiking to work at Tesla, its too far from any residential area, so drive commute only (also 102 miles round trip to Chilcoot). Beyond that, mostly it's not too bad in terms of cars dependency. Age and social scene are fine, lots social stuff around and downtown never quits. Druggies in general I would call vaguely average for the USofA.

Erica, Rocklin has a whole different Tesla factory.

Don't let my post scare you off, it was half joking. There are safe normal neighborhoods and it's not like meth zombies are walking around on every street corner. But drugs are an issue in Reno:

https://www.rgj.com/story/news/2018/03/12/meth-back-more-potent-and-kill-more-nevadans-than-opioids/390954002/

“The biggest threats for Northern Nevada have been for quite some time have been meth, heroin and opioids,” said Casey Kanekoa, the resident agent in charge of the Reno DEA. “And not in any particular order.”

And if you do a little googling around you'll see crime rates above the national average although this might be skewed around casino targeted property theft. Basically if you're a normal person, avoid the hood(s) and don't leave easily smash and grab stuff in your car, same as any other city.

Watch the law enforcement documentary TV show RENO 911! to give you an idea of the crime in Reno.

I lived in North Lake Tahoe for a decade - Reno was our closest city, so I spent a lot of time there. I think it's come a LONG way in terms of culture and activities. big_slacker was right in that the gambling/casinos/drugs/24-7 scene play kind of a weird part in living in the area. If you're susceptible at all to addiction, I'd really give it second thoughts. I watched a lot of friends get sucked into unhealthy lifestyles simply because it was all so... prevalent and easy. BUT, that weirdness aside, the outdoor opportunities are awesome and pretty damn accessible. Housing still seemed relatively affordable to me (at least compared to nearby Cali), no state income tax, lots of sunshine. Not bike commuting-friendly, except for certain areas. Good luck!

Ya.  It's no joke.
