Book for young college graduates about to earn lots of $$$
« on: November 18, 2012, 06:51:59 PM »
I would like to get my nephew a good FI book for Christmas as a present.  He will be graduating with a potential starting salary over 100K and I would like to make sure he reads something that can open his eyes on what he can do with the money.  Are there any books that follow the principals laid out by MMM that you would recommend?  I read "Your money or your life" and it seems to be OK, but might not get through to someone with no financial background who is just starting out his life with a high salary.  He is already talking about buying/LEASING new BMW's and living in trendy condos in NY... I do talk with him all the time but a good book that is easy to read might be a great ally in having him see the light.

The Millionaire Next Door, that is the book to read.  If you don't think he'd make it till the end, a quick short read might be "The Richest Man in Babylon", that might get him headed in the right direction, or maybe just link to a few MMM articles....

I would recommend YMOYL. Since you didn't like the idea of that, I'd second matt_g and suggest some MMM articles, maybe? MMM's certainly more captivating than most PF authors...

I've read the Millionaire Next Door book and thought it was great.  I was hoping there is something out there that will be written in a similar No BS approach as the MMM site with entertaining stories, examples etc.  I wish the MMM book was out already as it would make a perfect gift to someone like my nephew!  I just placed a hold on the Richest Man at my local library and will check it out as well.  Maybe a good approach would be getting him the Millionaire Next Door book and then linking to certain articles on the MMM site, depending on feedback.

Meanwhile, if there are other books that might work, please post it up!

Ah, another candidate for Tom Stanley's "Stop Acting Rich".  He'll recognize his kindred BMW-leasers and trendy condo-owners and see what trouble they'll get into.

He could also start reading the blog:  http://www.thomasjstanley.com/

It's a little more basic, but I like Ramit Sethi's I will teach you to be rich (the book, not necessarily the blog).  It's funny and meant for new college grads.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
