Blog articles in PDF or other offline format?
« on: January 28, 2014, 09:16:07 AM »
I think I recall a long time back someone had clipped MMM's blog articles into some other format to be read offline?  I have lots of free time at a job currently, but a locked down internet connection, so looking for a way to start re-reading all MMM's blog articles that I can bring there on a USB stick.  Aside from copying and pasting each one into Word, or something!

Any ideas?  Thanks!

I googled your question and there are several answers. The link below seems well written with several free options you may want to consider using.

If you have an RSS reader....I used to use google reader, but I think they stopped that, now I use Doggcatcher for RSS feeds and podcasts.  But it will save articles and podcast.  Google search for an RSS reader.

So you put in the RSS for MMM, and set the setting to save the last 200 or however many entries, and you will be able to read them all offline.

As far as creating PDFs goes, if you're on a Mac, any app can print to PDF thanks to a built-in system-wide feature. If you're on Windows, Google Chrome has a built-in print-to-PDF feature, or you can install a free print-to-PDF utility (like CutePDF or PrimoPDF) which will add this feature to any Windows application.

But I like Cromacster's idea of using an RSS reader to cache the past articles. If you can figure out how to do that, and then transfer the cache onto a USB stick, it might be the least labor-intensive option. Or you might find that a web-based RSS reader (like Newsblur or Feedly) is accessible from work, in which case you might not even need the USB stick at all.

Try CutePDF or a similar thing - then you open up a page, File-> Print, choose the PDF virtual printer.

Works well.

Thanks, all!  My preference is basic text-only, as the issue is also that my screen is visible is people come into office, so trying to keep it low key!

Every web to digital conversion will have its oddities and weird glitches, so don't give up just because the first one you try hiccups.

For RSS fans, Feedly is a really nice one, by far my favorite post-Google Reader. I use the iPad app primarily.
