Black Friday plans
« on: November 24, 2016, 05:34:13 PM »
Thanksgiving dinner is done, family has gone home.  It is time to make Black Friday plans.  I think I will get up early, throw a leg over the Softail, and hit the back roads.  Ride to towns that don't have any big stores.  Finish the day with dinner at GF's house.  Frugal or not, hell no I am not doing any shopping.

Lament the fact that somehow, in Canada, Black Friday has turned into a 2 week long event.

Friday is a chess day at the coffeehouse.  After that I usually knock out the crossword puzzle.

I'll only spend three dollars all day including the tip.

I'm hosting a Christmas working bee.  A bunch of friends and acquaintances are invited to bring whatever projects they have going--crafts, lists, cards to address, whatever.  Some of us will be sewing baby blankets for a local charity that supports mothers.  We'll probably drink tea.

Telework 1/2 day.  Pick up half price turkeys.  Play with horses.  Eat leftovers.

Might take DS to hit up Aldi at some point.  We are low on milk.

I guess I'm the first poster who's going to shop the sales.  A store in my area has sale on an item I use often, it's at 60% or normal and it only goes that low once a year.  I'm limited to 4x/day, but since there are two store locations in town I will get 8 :).

Set up the tree in the morning, then go around the house collecting our gently used old toys/books/clothes/housewares to donate to Goodwill. We do this every year.

I'll be putting up all my Christmas decorations including the lights, which will require a trip to Home Depot for clips. My husband also needs a sports jacket for interviews, so we'll probably hit up Men's Warehouse.

Going to work.  Then off to Lowes.  I bought a ladder on Wednesday and today the price is $50 less.  Going to get my refund.

I'll join the minority here and confess to going shopping.  My Christmas shopping is all done but there are a few thing I want to shop for myself.  I have found that in my not not very big city, the real rush of shopping is in the first couple hours of the stores opening.  By around 8a or 9a, the crowds die way down and some stores are even dead.  So I plan on hitting Kohl's to buy a couple t-shirts with my $10 coupon.  Then over to JoAnn fabric to see if I can find enough yarn on sale for the sweater I want to knit.  The final stop is Fleet Farm to check out the winter boots on sale.  I've been in need of winter boots for two years and have been striking out at the end of season sales.  After shopping I'm debating between knitting all day and putting up the Christmas tree.  I've been depressed lately, so putting up the tree may be the better idea.  There is just something about the soft lights and shiny ornaments that I find lifts my depression in the dark days of winter.

Hiking.  After that I may put up the Christmas decorations outside (which takes me about 2 minutes). Aldi tomorrow to get some groceries and I'll probably walk over to Target to get a birthday card for my daughter.

Walking the dog, making barrels of turkey soup from yesterday's leftovers, paying a few bills and checking the stash, putting up my Nativity set. I've decided to get a pre-lighted, tabletop, artificial tree this year, and need a new set of lights for the front stoop, so should probably make a Home Depot run--but don't much feel like it. Want to finish my paperback and start on my next one, and may bash out a couple drafts of book reviews...deadline is Dec. 15, and I have two to polish and two to start writing. Debated running out to the stores before the dog wakes up, but it just sounds too crazy. Yesterday was wild enough, with a houseful of kids. I fulfilled "Eat til you Pop", but am just not in the mood for "Shop til you Drop."

I used to do more, as it seemed there were better deals back when it was all on one day.

Anyway this year I ordered DS his Santa gift that we'd been eyeing for a few weeks and went on sale today. It'll go on salw again but might as well get it crossed off the list.

Working - no one here - the office is a ghost town - but I did not want to spend a vacation day since i knew it would be super quiet. It's a great day to do some file organizing - take a long walk at lunch - and catch the early train home!

Leisurely breakfast with the family (French toast with cranberry sauce and leftover pie - a tradition!), a hike in the woods, making turkey soup, and putting up some Christmas decorations. Then sewing!

I'm going to work.  One of my co-workers is going to hit the sales before work to buy a microwave for her family.

Black Friday has become a thing in Canada now even though our Thanksgiving was a month ago.  So much advertising.  I heard on the radio this morning that last year Black Friday surpassed Boxing Day in sales.

I did some shopping too. I tend to get my kids clothes at Christmas and there were good deals to be had at Sears and JCPenny. I am also working on finishing the raking because leaf pickup starts tomorrow. My industrious teenage son is out with the leaf blower making some money.

I finished decorating the front porch (most of the stuff came from the ReStore.) I worked on cleaning some stuff in the basement, as my winter resolution is to be ruthless about the clutter down there.

We might stop in a store or two this afternoon, once the hubbub dies down. Or not.

Making meatloaf for dinner, though!

Got woken up early by a work phone call. Decided to go explore the local Black Friday sale at the grocery megastore. Assigned by DW to buy socks at 50% off, eggs, and scones. Got some more LED Christmas lights at 50% off (building the collection over several years). Splurged on a Starbucks venti mocha. It was a big day

Next:  hiking and maybe later some snow camping.

Went for a run with my Wife. Then played soccer with the dog. Ate leftover turkey. Went for a walk, saw the crowded parking lot at the mall, and was very thankful that in my family, we are all mustachian and have zero desire to go shopping. And that includes the dog and the cat. They are pretty content with what they've got.

Working, because Canada.  I did purchase some watercolour paper online on a Black Friday sale.  I have a list of commonly used art supplies that I keep an eye out for sales on and jump on the opportunity.

I went shopping this morning -- I live in a fairly rural area where even Black Friday is fairly low-key. I hit JoAnn Fabrics for some fabric to replace the collar and cuffs of three of my husband's favorite flannel shirts -- at 90 cents a shirt and a little work on my part they will last for years longer. I also got beads to make a gift for a friend and some fabric for a quilt for our bed to replace the one that is wearing out -- that's a project I'll work on next year. Then it was on to Penney's, where I scored a new coat and boots at significantly lower than usual prices. The thrifted $15 coat I have been making do with for the past two years (though it never really fit me right -- the arms were too short) has been washed and will be donated back to the thrift store. And I never find good boots at a thrift store and they are a winter essential. So I'm very happy with my purchases and it was a stress free outing -- made it home in time to take the dogs for a 3-mile walk. Spending the afternoon knitting Christmas gifts and listening to audio books.

Slept till 10:30(!), then had a lazy coffee over the NYT with my fiance.  My younger son and I went to Costco for underwear and new sheets for him and his brother (they are still using their little kid sheets with spaceships and footballs/basketballs on them, despite being in their mid/late teens, oops).  Then I took him for a haircut and out for a bagel sandwich.  Now I'm home, thinking about making banana chocolate chip bread with the overripe bananas we have.  My fiance and I going out for a drink with a friend tonight, and then probably coming back for Netflix.  Overall, a good day.

Family hike, then got the grand tour of DS2's apartment (nice Victorian with original woodwork), then stopped at DD3's place to chat and see the remodeling in progress (bathroom) and see if the cat remembers us.  Unfortunately DD1 won't get leave until mid December, and DS4 stayed home since he wasn't feeling up to a bike.  But DS5 is enjoying all the nerf guns his older sibs  (and one's boyfriend) passed on to him!

I did have to go out for dog food and to mail some bills...the roads were crazy congested. I couldn't even imagine going into the mall stores for shopping. It was nice to have mid-morning pie with friends down the road, have two long dog-walks, play semi-incessantly with tireless dog, take a brief nap under the down comforter, and put a little Jack Daniels in some eggnog. This evening will be Netflix and paperbacks by the fireplace. Splurged online ($17.00) for an inspirational country sign that says "Imagine. Dream. Believe." Probably should have made it myself  instead of buying it, but those are my favorite watchwords...mean a lot to me...really resonate...so I bought it.

Used to never shop on Black Friday but love it now.  Got a cup of coffee from the kitchen, ran down the list for the kids xmas gifts on Amazon and clicked the check out button in about 10 mins. Then went upstairs to fry up a few eggs....

Slept in.  Checked a few websites for sales (most of which weren't having good enough sales for me to care).  Did purchase some electronics upgrades, but all used from ebay when I didn't find decent prices on new stuff in the sales.  (Today... prepping to sell the older electronics to offset the cost.)

And then had good times with the chainsaw cutting up branches from giant pine tree that fell over the day before thanksgiving.  It was... therapeutic.

Might go in search of clearanced turkeys later today...

No turkeys at the WinCo I stopped at yesterday.  :(  Might try the other one today; that is where I bought them last year for like 39c/lb.

I did grab an Instant Pot from Amazon.  Now I have two and will get rid of my old slow cooker.  I actually wish for a second Instant Pot, or at least a spare liner, quite frequently when cooking.  I also ordered two jackets, but they are potential replacements for one I bought a few weeks ago, and haven't worn yet because I thought I could find something that will suit my needs better (in the end will return two and keep one).

Teleworked a few hours, worked my horse, rode my friend's mare and walked the dog.  DH brought home slices from our favorite pizza spot, so we had that and salads and veged out on the couch for a bit.

Went for a short solo hike through the park near my house.

Crocheted a bunch of snowflakes and other holiday decorations for gifts (oh, boy, last time I crocheted little white snowflakes was more than a decade ago - BEFORE my up close vision went to the crapper).

Made turkey sandwiches for lunch and leftovers for dinner.

Went to the grocery store for milk and bagels.

Husband tore out the dishwasher and kitchen sink and did some plumbing - put in a new disposal, got a new faucet, sealed up the sink better from water and the wall from ants.  New dishwasher comes Monday.

Played with little kid, was a servant for big kid who has a fever/ cold/ cough (basically made him some peppermint herbal tea with honey).

I shopped too, but feel it is still within the mustachian vibe. Ordered some books from Thrift Books (20% off the already good used prices and free shipping - will use a few as Christmas gifts for the kid, and save one for Easter to give instead of candy), ordered some clearance plus 50% off clothes in the next few sizes up for the kid that were marked down to thrift store prices, and renewed my membership with the local zoo at 31% off regular price. It was all stuff we would have bought anyway, but much cheaper than regular and didn't involve going to any actual stores.
