Citi Double Cash is 2% on all purchases, hard to beat for cash back rewards

It really depends on what categories you spend on, if you like to travel and want to learn how to use miles for flights in an effective matter, and how many cards you are willing to have.

I have 14 credit cards, but I only carry around 3, sometimes 4, in my wallet at any given point in time. But all 14 credit cards have their purpose.

What I believe to be the best two cash back credit card combo for most people:
Citi Double Cash - as mentioned, earns 2% on everything
Sallie Mae MC - 5% on first $250/$250/$750 on gas/groceries/bookstores (including Amazon) per month

I've done very well with AMEX blue cash everyday for my go-to grocery (3%) and gas (2%) and anything else (1%) cash back card (these numbers are doubled if you get the preferred card with $75 annual fee).   I also have a Chase Freedom for rotating 5% categories.  Add a Discover It and you'll do very well with simple cash back.

I will echo others in suggesting other cards if your goal is different (travel hacks, etc.).

If you want to use one card, you'll get 5% back at best. If you use all of your spending to hit sign up bonuses on credit cards, you'll get somewhere between 10-50% back on your spending.

This page lists best offers for a lot of cards: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/credit-card-programs/1177334-special-credit-card-offers-master-thread-subscription.html

You really need to assess what your goals are before you can find out your best combo.

Airline miles are only worth it if you plan on using them for a purpose.  And airline miles are worthless unless you hit a certain number of them.  18000 United Miles are worthless is you need 25000 for the flight you want to take.  I don't believe in stockpiling airline or hotel miles because they can be devalued at any moment in time.  Only go for them if you have a purpose.

If you just want 1 card--right now the best card is the Discover It which is offering a 2%/3%/10% cashback for the first year.

My current stable of actively used cards:

Fidelity Amex: 2% cashback minimum.  You can redeem your points for values up to 3.2% cashback.  Every so often then offer quarterly 5% bonuses.  Amex Sync offers.  This card IMO opinion is far superior to the Citi Double Cash.

Amex Blue Cash preferred:  6% cashback at grocery stores.  3% at department stores and gas.  I buy all my groceries on this card and if I need to buy something on Amazon I'll buy an Amazon giftcard at the grocery store to earn 6% cashback.  You can get Lowe's, Sears, etc. at your grocery store likely.  $6000 yearly max on the 6% cashback.  $75 annual fee...if you don't want the annual fee you can go with the Sallie Mae Mastercard but I don't like having to work around its monthly limits.

The other option is to buy Amex gift cards when they shoot up to 2% cashback on a portal with a 2% card.  If you buy a $3000 Amex gift card after the $8.95 in purchase fees you'll effectively get 3.7% cashback on anything you purchase with the Amex gift card.
