Anyone out there work as a renewable project developer?
« on: November 23, 2020, 10:14:18 AM »
Hi Everyone - here's a short background.  I spent a decade in the energy business (primarily oil and gas), I left the industry a couple years ago, and have been working in the tech/supply chain space.  My background is finance roles, however I also spent time managing large projects.  I greatly enjoyed managing projects and working through the various challenges that come up with multi-year, complicated efforts that involve a variety of stakeholders.  Lately, Ive been spending time thinking about doing something I'm passionate about in an industry that can truly make a difference in the world.

For those out there familiar with project developer roles in renewables (wind, solar, batteries), do you see people "transition" into these types of roles?  Any advice you'd share?

It's such a new field, I think you should ask those types of companies directly. Not in a "give me a job kind of way" but "what kind of opportunities will exist in this field in the future" kind of way. You can get on their mailing lists and show up (zoom in) to their events. Or email the contacts from the website directly.

You could create a job description of what this kind of position can do and put that on your linked in. Or even make a website detailing everything you can do and how it's relevant to the green industry. Then give your links to any contacts you might meet.

Not that new -- renewable companies have been contracting with established utilities to provide power for a couple of decades, although it's gotten much bigger more recently.

OP, if you google "Renewable developers" you'll get the top 10 as the first hit, and most of them are either US-based or have US divisions.  I can't help you with contacts, but when I was looking at this I reached out to everyone I could find either directly (check the previous response) or indirectly, to talk about what was out there.  Also, some old-fashioned regional utilities have development groups that focus on renewables, especially if you're in CA. Check your local laws regarding requirements for renewables going forward.

Texas has an enormous number of new wind + solar (especially solar)  projects in various stages of development.
