Any Youngstown OH, MMM Landlords with a home to rent?
« on: June 06, 2016, 08:27:16 AM »
Hi,

Never hurts to ask, so is there anyone in the Youngstown OH area with a home to rent, or any MMM members here know of a home to rent?  I say Youngstown, but would actually prefer south of the city; Think Canfield, Salem, Columbiana, E. Palestine.  Would also prefer rural, but appreciate any leads.  It's just me, so I would like to keep rent under $800 if possible.  Thank you very much for the help.

I would check on Craigslist--that is how my daughter found the rental house that our two families moved in to together when we first moved to Boardman. The rental was four houses up from Mill Creek Park and the walking trails (landlord had not been mentioned the park in the ad), and I was lucky enough, using the rental as a base, to find a house to buy right across the road from the park. Anyway, Boardman overall may not be rural enough for you, and 224 is a parking lot at times (hate that road), but schools are excellent and it is a convenient commute to Youngstown proper.

Oh, I didn't see that it is for just you. Does it have to be a whole house? Or why not do an apartment while you look around for something to buy?

Whoa, two other Youngstown folks on here? Small world. I currently live in Canfield. I know a few landlords but all have tenants right now.

I agree with the above poster: start with Craigslist. You'll find a lot of good deals. I also think you'll find some pretty darn cheap apartments if you're willing to go that route.

Where are you trying to commute to?

Hi, and thanks everyone.  I currently live in Beaver County PA, and am early retired (Thanks MMM!), so no commute concerns, or worries about schools.  I threw out the Youngstown area, as I figured it would be my best chance to find a rental home.  I'm in the process of selling my moms home, in which I currently reside, and need a place for at least awhile fairly close, while I consider a long term place to live (West is looking really nice, I miss it).  Boardman and Poland seem real nice, but are as mentioned hardly rural.

Would really like to find a place in Beaver PA, which is closer to where I am now, but it's hard finding rental homes that seem worth the rent.  I have considered apartments, townhouses, and other than stand alone homes, but after having my car either broken into, or hit and runs in the parking lot, "regular" apartments seem really sucky as a choice for me.  ReadySetMillionaire, could you recommend an apartment complex that might not potentially be too sucky?  Appreciate the help, and please keep the suggestions coming.

Evidently there are 3 of us from Youngstown!

I agree that you should rent an apartment first, and then look around, because there is such a huge range within a given area - there are places in Poland that are really rural and places that are not. Same with Canfield.

The towns you're mentioning are all rural and suburban. Route 224 goes straight through Canfield, Boardman, and Poland. The more south you get from 224, the more rural it gets in all of these towns.

But if commute isn't a concern, I think your best bet is to get something in Boardman and be close to Mill Creek Park. I'm biased because I'm from here, but it's a remarkable hidden gem and never gets old. There are something like 17 miles of dirt trails and 25 miles of paved trails. I've lost 12 pounds since I moved back home just because of always going to the park.

Alternatively, there are a couple nice apartment complexes in Poland. The names are escaping me but they are real close to 680, which will allow you to be in a quasi-rural area and be close to getting on the interstate so you can get back to Beaver the easiest.

I've been told that it's hard to find houses to rent around here, because people coming in from elsewhere to work in the fracking industry need to rent homes for their families. Again, I'd recommend Craigslist. And I'm scratching my head a little, because Youngstown isn't really that close to Beaver county, PA. It's 25 minutes just to get to the PA state line taking  Rt 80 from where I live in Boardman. I think I'd just hold out for something in PA, since your real goal is to move out West. I mean, you're going to have to change your car registration, where you pay income taxes...all that pain in the neck stuff.  And then do it again when you go West. (I moved here from out of state, so I've done it.) PA is a nice state, and it would be more simple to just stay there someplace...research the western areas that interest you (Denver, Portland, whatever), and then make the jump when you're ready. Or just make the big move  when your mother's house sells and closes--and go straight out West.

Somebody just posted to get something in Boardman and be close to Mill Creek Park. That's what I did--I'm just across the road from the park, and I'm in there twice a day with my dog. But people stand in line to get places on the park. It took me several months of looking while I was in the rental to find something on the Park. I just lucked out because I drove down the road I wanted to live on every single day praying for a for sale sign. Just was very fortunate--it would be hard to come in "cold" and find something on the Park.

My boyfriend and I used to rent an apartment in an old mansion bordering Mill Creek Park in Boardman, and later on lived in Warren. It has to be one of the most beautiful Metroparks around, and it seemingly goes on forever. We almost bought a place on the park, but ended up having to move out of state. I'm hoping we can make it back there at some point. You certainly can't beat the cost of living and I tend to prefer locales with defined seasons.

I did a dental residency at St. E's and lived in Boardman for a year.  Very good hospital for a smaller city, I might add.

It's on Glenwood Avenue. Our apartment was generously sized at 2000 sf, and there are six units in the building. The townhouse I made an offer on but had to withdraw was down the road off of Glenwood on Devonshire Drive. I telecommute and during lunch I would walk through the backyard to the park and find myself a nice bench in the shade. :)
