any other older folks reading this blog?
« on: July 27, 2013, 01:44:35 PM »
I love mmm's general philosophy.  My husband and i have been working at reducing our consumerism for decades rather than years.  We're just now feeling financially independent and retiring.  Even if you can't retire super early, building a nice stash gives you flexibility and the ability to change jobs or take a lower paying job you'd like better.  I also agree with mmm about the impact on the environment of less consumerism.

I've lived thru the era when city streets smelled like diesel fuel, thru the clean air act and now to mountains of trash.  Most ofbthe folks on here are younger.  Any other older stashes want to trade old war stories?

Hi there.  I am 49 and I would say I qualify as an older stashe!  I came across this blog about 3 months ago and it has changed my life.

Around the same time I found this blog, I had quit my old job.  My plan was to take about a month off and then start looking for work.  Anyway, I had a lot of time to check out this blog and I love it.  If someone had asked me about my level of consumerism before I got here, I would have said it was low but I have learned that I'd been wasting a lot of money on stuff.  Lots of unconscious spending on things that didn't make me any happier.  I am much more conscious now of my spending.

I will be able to retire at 59 or 60 because I had been saving about 10%+ of income regularly.   As I've posted before, okay, maybe I can't retire early but at least I don't have to live like an unconscious consumer robot!

I am looking forward to reading posts from older people on here and why they are here since 'early' retirement isn't really possible.  This is a good idea for a thread.

I had a food budget of $1 / day my last year of college. Little did I know that figuring out how to get by on that amount was merely an early Mustachian learning experience!

Like you, I've seen lots of market booms and busts. Gives one perspective, dun't it?

I will turn 57 in August. Hubs will be turning 65. He retired a year ago; I am still working 3/4 time. I have actually had quite a happy working life, for the most part, as did Hubs, so retiring super early was not the goal. FI was. We are there. I will continue to work for the next year or so,  then I will start taking courses (free to town residents) at the great small college right here in town.

Yup. Been retired and living on very little for quite a while now. Nice to see others doing the same, or preparing to. Just turned 68.

Hi, I'm 62 and semi-retired earlier this year (I work about 30-40 hours per month).  I love this blog as much for the mind set it promotes as the practical ideas.  It has helped me retire earlier than I thought I would be able to because I have reduced my spending so much.  I am actually still increasing my "stache" as my expenses are less than my income at present.  I want to be in a really good position before I retire completely.

My first brush with "mustachianism" (of course didn't call it that then) was right after I graduated from nursing school.  While my friends were running up their department store credit cards buying clothes and decorating their apartments, I was saving everything I could so I could go to Europe.  One year after graduation (1973) I bought a plane ticket and a book called "Europe on $5 a Day" and flew to Luxembourg (their airline had cheap fares).  After traveling around for about 3 weeks, I got a job in a US Army hospital in Germany as a civilian and ended up staying there for 3 years.  I was able to travel all over western Europe during that time.  It was the best thing I ever did.

So glad to see this!  I was just going to post a question but wasn't sure where/which/what to put it under?????  The husband and I are at the end of the "Baby Boomers" being born in 1957 & 1958 and I keep reading about how the boomers are going to deplete SSI as there are so many of us out there to be collecting.

At the same time the articles read that the boomers have had the highest number of the population contributing to SSI ever.

I am terrible at math (unless it comes to counting money in hand) so can someone please explain this to me?

No, we're not retired yet - wish I had been smarter - but no, we're not relying on SS for retirement income.  However I do know quite a few people who are sadly enough. Just curious about this.

I suppose it's the obvious government mishandling of money.

Actually you're in the middle of the Baby Boom, not the end (as am I, born in 1957):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_boomer

There are many more "behind" us! There are many possibilities to improve social security's outlook, including immigration reform. But that's a story for another thread....  ; )

Welcome to MMM!

I agree with you about the "not living like a consumer robot" part.  My life has varied between somewhat frugal and very frugal depending on the situation.  When my son began high school it dawned on me that my modest child support would end just when college expenses began.  I looked at my spending, which I thought was quite modest and cut out nearly everything that wasn't necessary.  Realized that I could go a year or more without buying any clothes or other misc. goods.  I was amazed at how much I was able to save in the 4 years before  his college began!

Went on a bike ride yesterday with a friend and we were talking about our desire to cut back on consumerism, more to gain the time (all of that decorating and shopping and maintaining that many people do can take a lot of time) and reduce the waste flow than because we need the money.  She, a bit more than me, was stating how difficult it is when your social world doesn't involve many people who live on less.  I'm hoping to find at least a virtual support group here.

Early 50's here, and a knitter, too!  Husband got laid off a couple months ago and hasn't figured out if he's retired or not yet.  Could we live off our 'stache?  Probably.  Do we want to?  Not too sure about that.

Knitters often joke about yarn stash - SABLE, or Stash Acquisition Beyond Life Expectancy.  Swap 'stache for stash and that's what we're all aiming for here.

We've probably seen quite a few earlier versions of MMM also.  I had a little paperback book called "How to Live on Nothing" by Joan Shortney that I read for inspiration after I graduated from college in the mid-70s which was another tough time to get a job.

But it is nice to know that you have some choices, isn't it?  My husband got laid off a couple of years ago.  We took a vacation x-country skiing in Yellowstone.  It was something we had always wanted to do but never could because as a teacher he couldn't take a vacation during the school year.  He went back to work for a few years, mostly part time, and this year we are leaving the jobs for good.

I am 54 and have a small stache, but an off-setting line of credit for almost the same amount. I do own my home outright. The line of credit is due to living beyond our means when my husband was alive. Now that there is just me, I have cut expenses way back to make ends meet and pay off the LOC. This blog inspires me and gives me ways to beef up my stache.

I still hope to semi-retire at 60. I am thinking of downsizing to a condo to pay off the LOC.

Husband and I are both in our 60s.  He's been retired for 12 years, me for 4.  I realize now I could have retired much, much earlier with a few budget tweaks and courage to retire before pension kicked in.

I read mostly because MMM is so enjoyable and to pass along info to younger relatives.

I've yet to get past the part of not wanting to spend anything that's not necessary because of the uncertainty.  When I say we could probably live off our savings, I think it would be lean.  Insurance is the scary part for me (COBRA is almost $1k/month!)

Hey geekette - Our current COBRA is about $1k / month also. Have you checked out the Affordable Care Act? In many states you will be able to examine rates starting in October. Coverage starts in January 2014.

Depending on your 2013 income, you may qualify for a subsidy. Check it out!

We're in NC, which has been in the news recently for all the wrong reasons, but I'll certainly be keeping watch.

The unemployment stuff is crazy, too.  Although he will qualify early September, I don't think DH will even apply.

How many knitting bicyclists are there!  The knitters and bicyclists I know don't overlap.  When I hit this post (the 4th or 5th with the same general profile) I burst out laughing.

I am 66, DH is 78.  We retired at 48 and 60 respectively.  We are fortunate as DH has a very good pension from his employment.  However when we retired we had been married only 3 months and together our net worth was about 100k.  We have been able to increase our net worth significantly because we have never lived up all of our income and the only debt we have had was mortgage debt which has been retired for quite a few years now.  We have also been able to be givers.  We tithe and give to our church and give to other organizations.  We have also been able to give substantial help to family members.  We have more than enough and we enjoy being able to increase our giving each year.

I have very much enjoyed MMM as it has helped me to reduce our spending--without reducing our lifestyle.

I'm 62, almost 63.  I retire August 16.  Mixed feelings, I love my job, but am looking forward to having more time for other interests, including volunteering.  Also a knitter, spinner, sewer, gardener.

There are more of us here than I had thought, given the general audience for this blog.  I have always been frugal, and now find myself giving advice to my retired sister who had a much better-paying job while she was working, and is now learning the joy of spending where you want to spend, not on stuff.

yes - my husband and I were both born in 1958. Although the MMM community is generally younger, I'm not at all surprised to have somewhat older readers here too, since we tend to be the ones nearing a more standard retirement age, and looking for specifics on SWR, etc. I love it for the ideas and inspiration. I've always been frugal, but never thought to actually walk to work, although my commute is only 1 mile away! Most of all, it feels like you all have my (virtual) back when I encounter spendy pants friends, family and coworkers. My husband had an unexpected layoff in 2009, and after a couple more of years freelancing, he's started on a different, self employed path. I work full time. I'm looking forward to FI, although I will probably work a bit longer after that is achieved for the added cushion - primarily for health care in old-old age.

I am 50 and accidentally reached FI at around 35 via a lucky rental property investment, but have only gotten serious about my financial life in the last 4 years or so. When I think of how much money I have frittered away over the years, it is pathetic. I did, however, kill all my debt during my last stint in the working world (I go in and out as needed and as able in a lower-middle-class income range, which is plenty when combined with rental income), and have a decent IRA in place. It is hideous to admit that until the last few years I never even had an emergency fund; I mean NONE. That has changed, thanks to discovering Get Rich Slowly, MMM and other PF blogs. My loved ones roll their eyes, but PF blogs been lifechanging for me.

I'm now quite frugal with stuff like cell phones (Ting), cable (none), cars (older, used, reliable), clothes, food, bike when possible, etc. But I'm also in an educational program that is costing me money (though I'm not incurring debt), and I'm doing it for the love of it, not as a career move. I know that is not frugal, but for personal reasons I felt it was worth it. I also don't own a home but feel overweight in real estate so hesitate to buy more. I sometimes worry about spending my old age under a bridge but I remind myself that while not perfect I am taking steps, slowly but surely, to secure my future.

Well, I am 40, which isn't as old as some, but obviously I'll never reach FI by 30....

I figure I am on track to reach FI at 55, when my kids are in college and my mortgage will be paid off.

I am also attracted to the MMM philosophy in general, especially as seeing frugality not in terms of deprivation, but as a positive set of values; not being wasteful etc....

I am also in my late 40's, have always saved to a degree, but really focusing on retirement by 55 as one more child to help through college.  Before MMM I wasn't nearly as focused on FI as DW, she is pleased I'm finally 100% on board.

I am 48.  Retired last year.  I enjoy the MMM blog because he challenges my assumptions about minimum needed spending.  I could have stopped working almost a decade sooner if I had thought this way back then.  But I am enjoying it fully now, and sharing what I learn with younger family members.

Health insurance has always been the scary part of this - and one of the areas that I think MMM doesn't quite get  how health insurance can bite older pre-medicare retirees.  At least the new health law will take away the fear of pre-existing conditions.  In some places and situations it should make things cheaper - but for others more expensive.  I'm using COBRA now and will be checking out the marketplace in my state in October.

I am sixty, and happily retired. I enjoy the blog both for ideas and for support with my tightwad ways. Both the blog posts and forum discussions have helped me save money on a number of recurring expenses -- cell phone, electric bill -- and have inspired me to do things I likely would not have tried -- upgrade the memory in my Mac. Which, btdubs, involved the humiliation of watching a video entitled " A Fifth Grader Can Upgrade Memory in a Mac".

60 here, too.

I use this site to get ideas on how to live happily on less money, for preparation and inspiration when we do retire. We don't spend much now, but everyone can learn something from someone.

I can retire comfortably at $42k a year in a year and a half, but if I wait until 65 and my wife and I retire at the same time, we will make $75,000+ together. We can easily live on less than $20k, so I won't need to touch our savings.

That, and we have three rental properties, which I am not counting in the income. My farming by then will just be to sustainably feed ourselves and a few friends and family.

I enjoy my job as a librarian, so I'm in no big hurry to retire, but do look forward to the freedom retirement will bring.

I don't think of myself as old, but maybe many MMM readers would.  I am 52.  I have been working since I was 14.  Ugh.  Thinking of maybe retiring from my teaching gig within 10 years.

I think I am in fairly good financial shape except for my mortgage.  I have about $250K in 401K and IRAs, but I owe $240K on my house.  I own one vehicle outright and have no other debt.  A recent (last week) appraisal came in at $300K, so that's a good thing.  My expenses (aside from mortgage) run about $15,000 per year.

I am thinking that after working for 5 more years, my stash will be at about $320,000 and I will owe about $153K on the house (after throwing a lot of extra $$ at it).  Maybe then it will be time to think about quitting the job, selling the house, buying a camper insert for my truck, and doing some cool traveling!!  Oh, and I am single with no offspring (funny word, that!), so I don't have spouse or kids to consider.  Just me, myself, and I!

I'm now quite frugal with stuff like cell phones (Ting), ...

Can you tell me more about Ting?

Sorry, I didn't see this until just now! Yes, as mentioned below, check out I.P. Daley's telecom info here on the MMM forum. I cut the cord to Verizon, and more than halved my cell bill (to $27 + taxes last month). There are other fine options besides Ting, but I am happy with them. Just one strategy among many to be found here in MMM-land.

I am 59 & hubby is 55. We are both semi-retired & loving it. both of us have consulting businesses and work p.t. for ourselves.  For us it is the best of all worlds.

Define older....I fear I might qualify. :)

I have grey hair...Does that count? (I did start going grey at 15 though!)

Husband and I are both in our late 40's. Trying to talk my husband into an earlier retirement than he is planning. Even if he doesn't want to at least it would be nice for him to know he has that option. It's nice to know there are others in the same boat.

I'm mid-40s, and I might qualify too.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
