Any Mustachian smokers?
« on: August 31, 2014, 06:54:42 PM »
I was musing in a quiet moment at work today, when everyone else was out having a fag break, how much money I save by not smoking - like the latte effect but much greater. Then I wondered if, due to everyone on this forum having different spending priorities (I'm sure someone has retired early while still making a daily trip to Starbucks!), anyone on here intending to FIRE is also a smoker. If so, how do you cope with the knowledge that every packet of cigarettes pushes your FIRE date further away (not to mention health damage etc)? What is stopping you giving up?

There have been several threads in Throw Down the Gauntlet about smoking (and quitting)

Here's one of the longer ones: http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/throw-down-the-gauntlet/punching-smoking-in-the-face!/

Isn't that an oxymoron? Maybe even a double oxymoron?

I used to smoke pipes and cigars.  Did it for over 20 years.  But, a while before I acquired a frugal living mindset, I lost interest in the smoking.  (Yep, just like that; no big traumatic "quitting" story.)

Yet, while I was a smoker, I found it had very little impact on my finances because of what I did smoke.  It is very economical to smoke a pipe.  And you can pick your type and source of cigars to be thrifty without having to smoke dried up caca.  Both are more satisfying than cigarettes, too.

FWIW!!

From a financial aspect, I found it to be almost no different...

When I used to smoke, I used to eat MUCH less.. Now that I don't smoke and work out, I tend to eat MUCH more.

So yes, I spend more money on food that negates the former additional expense of smoking.

From a health aspect - well... no reason to bother explaining.

Love my Sunday cigars.  They're my reward for reaching my weekly goals.  I figure as long as I am not (physically) addicted to nicotine, as long as I maintain my exercise regimen, and as long as I am not borrowing money to smoke them (ie I have no debt), then I can enjoy some fine and fancy things.  I also have cable, gamble occasionally, and have a 1971 f250.  I drive my prius to work, never eat lunch out, and save 60% of my income.  Now, it being a holiday, I'm going to fire up a nice stick and contemplate my soon coming early retirement.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
