Any logicians want to discuss open statements?
« on: May 31, 2019, 05:10:59 PM »
Or anyone who thinks about logic. I started taking a logic class and my teacher was telling me she herself had questions about definitions.
She said she would ask around in her math department and I said I would ask around too.
Questions:
Are open sentences statements (assuming statements must be true or false)?
Are beliefs statements? (God exists. Trump is a good person.)
Are sentences in the future statements? (It will rain tomorrow.)?
I don't know that much about logic (this might be obvious) but I think a discussion could help me think about it if anyone answers, and I will print it out for her in a week.
Or if you know of a better forum to ask that would help too.

Logic is an old interest of mine.

Beliefs and future statements are both statements. In postmodernism a statement can be both true and false, depending on perspective (such as a belief). It could also be said to be neither true nor false since there is no way of proving it. A false statement is not the same as a lie, provided that the person saying it is misinformed.

A future statement could also be considered both true and false until it is proven one way or another (the cat is both dead and alive until you open the box).

I am not sure what you mean by an open sentence (too long since I studied this).

So she defines an open sentence (in math) as a statement that could be true or false. Because it uses variables it is not known whether it's true or false(x+2=3). A closed mathematical sentence is a sentence that is known to be true or false.
A statement is true or false and is a complete sentence that makes a claim.
Can an open sentence be a statement? (It will rain tomorrow.)
I hope that helps
 Thanks @MrsWolfeRN

Ok, so I think a belief is an open sentence, not a statement, since there is no way of proving whether it is true or false.

A future statement is kind of like a hypothesis, because you can wait to see what happens, although in statistics we would say "there is less than 95% probability that it will rain tomorrow" , and try to prove that wrong.

Interesting, I'll chew on that. Thanks.
