Any legitimate work at home gigs?
« on: January 20, 2014, 05:29:52 PM »
The wife would like to stay home with our daughter full time.  Problem is we aren't sure we can make it work on my salary alone, and if we could it would seriously impact our FIRE goals.  Are there any legit work at home opportunities that aren't scams?

Leapforce and Lionbridge both pay $13.50 an hour to rate websites for search engines.  Another similar one is Appen Butler Hill.

The company I work for (SF tech travel startup) hires customer support agents that work from home across the US and UK.  I'm not sure of the hourly wage, but the hours are flexible which may work well for a parent. The only requirement is a good internet connection, a computer and a headset.

I'm a programmer and also work from home, but there are prerequisite skills needed there.

Good luck!

Most sites in there will pay sub minimum wage, unless you get a lot of referrals to do the work for you.

Here is one, I actually made some money accidentally the way they teach when I first signed up.
I say accidently, cause I didn't want to spend no money just to find out it was another piece of crap scam with the same old tired advice.
Did the free offer, then after I learned what they were teaching made $10 dollars.

Still learning it, but not sure how far I'm actually going to take it.  I'm still learning self-control & the methods promoted DEFINITELY need self restraint.

I just checked the linked and seen that it's to a landing page.  Not very helpful, I'm sorry.
Mostly what it is about IFW's Incentive Freebee Website.
How to make money as both as a trader or site runner & couple of other ways within the industry.
Also points out the pitfalls and things to watch out for.

Even MMM does it

My only real concern with it has to do with myself, personally.  I've never even allowed myself to have a credit card or buy anything on credit cause I think the temptation would be to great.  So ya, it's legit...just be careful if you believe you are a person who can't handle temptation issues.

I applied and interviewed for a position with Zirtual and am anxiously waiting to hear back right now.  It is all online virtual assisting.

Is your spouse a CPA or EA?  If so, there are work at home gigs with the major online tax return places.  Pay is decent with 401k (with match).  Can make 20k-30k for 4 months work in your PJ's.  Let me know if you want more info as it is one of my income producers!

I know a few people who do transcription services at home. It's decent money if you're a wicked typist.

Thanks for all of the great tips!  Kelly, unfortunately no, she is not a CPA or EA.  She's a teacher.

So what?  Has anyone honestly tried to do work while at home with kids?  Might be easy with the baby when it's very small, but holy shit they won't just sit there while you get your work done.

American Express has a number of home-based jobs. Search "virtual," "telecom," etc.

Infants are damn near impossible to care for while working, even if you can get up from your work whenever you need to and come back to it later.  Unless you have a kid that naps all day and still sleeps through the night, I wouldn't recommend trying to work and be primary caregiver simultaneously.  You might be able to fake it for a while, but in the end either your child or your work (or both) will be neglected.

Try to pick up freelancing jobs through Elance or Odesk.. That way you can set your own hours and workload. It's a bit of work sifting through the crapload of jobs that pay shamefully little, but there's good jobs and clients willing to pay good money to be found there.
