Annoyed about getting 1.5% APR on my checking account!
« on: April 02, 2014, 09:24:18 AM »
In order to organize my saving goals I have a TIAA Direct Saving account which is intended to collect funds for emergencies, home improvements and other goals. This "high yield" account gives me 0.44% APR.
I went to my credit union this morning to deposit refund checks  from my homeowners and car insurance policies (I  removed excessive coverage and raised a deductible) and noticed a sign about their "RewardU" checking account that is the same account that I have basically except it gives interest at 1.5% APY,  no minimum balance (max at that APY is 10K). All that was necessary to switch me over was just signing disclosure forms...same account. same debit card, came check book, so easy..

But, now I don't feel like putting my money in the savings account. Its annoying because I like the compartmentalization, it helps me organize my thoughts not to have "different" monies all smushed together.

I have a similar 'problem' with my HRCA (2.5% up to 25,000). My solution was to kill off the savings account and 'divide' my checking acct short term savings and my primary acct through an excel spreadsheet.

I use Smarty Pig for compartmentalizing my savings.  It works pretty we'll and yields about 1%.  The only disadvantage, or advantage, is that it takes a couple days to transfer money back and forth to your checking account.

I guess I'll just work out spreadsheet categories between the two. Its a pretty good interest rate, better than anything else out there it seems. Go figure...

YNAB is great for compartmentalizing savings funds like you're wanting.

I just started using Mint but am finding it rather limited. YNAB sounds a lot more flexible....but it cost $60 and I'm cheap. :)
