Amazon side hustle
« on: May 15, 2015, 09:46:51 AM »
For anyone looking for side hustle type things, I've been selling things on Amazon and let me tell you, it's absolutely amazing. It is incredibly easy to list, print shipping labels, and get rid of things. It takes me 5 minutes total to list and ship something. I went through some old videogames and textbooks and so far I've gotten over $100. The fees are definitely worth it.

I've seen people on here often talking about selling things online, but I didn't realize it was that EASY.

Are you selling new things, or your old stuff?

What is your step by step process?  Find the item, click "I have one to sell", and then describe the condition?

I'm interested in the process to do this too. I usually sell stuff on Craigslist and have had great success doing it for years. What I've noticed lately is that antiques and collectibles don't sell on CL and I'd be interested in trying Amazon if it works that well for used stuff. Seems that it would be a much bigger market and I don't really feel like using EBay seems like too much hassle.

From my experience this is what has worked for me:
 - ebay: used and new easily shippable items (mainly clothing and some rare books I had)
 - craigslist: used large items (bike, suitcase)
 - amazon: i don't sell here directly, but I do trade in used books and electronics.  OK- you don't get cash, you get amazon credit but the trade in amounts are higher than other buy back sites in 90% of the cases but I buy things on Amazon (like grocery items).  For books type in the ISBN number in the search box and you'll see if they'll accept a trade in or not.

The best way to sell old textbooks is to go to big words.com and add them all to your book bag. You can compare whether you should just send them in to a reseller or list them yourself.

But I agree, Amazon is a great way to make extra money. We started just selling our own stuff but then I started reading a blog called Big Habitat and buying stuff to resell. It's laughable the things ppl will buy on Amazon at way higher prices than anywhere else. My best one was an exclusive to Target robot toy that I got with a coupon on black Friday, then sold as fulfilled by amazon for 20 more than the list price at Target??? Even though it was still in stock at Target and the buyer didn't even get expedited shipping! Ppl are dumb and Amazon lets you capitalize on that.

Interesting - I have been selling rare books (comic/graphic novels usually) on eBay for higher than Amazon resellers - I asked one of my repeat buyers why they bid higher than prices on Amazon and they said that they've had too much hassle with Amazon resellers and eBay has a better refund policy if the book is not as described.

What is your step by step process?  Find the item, click "I have one to sell", and then describe the condition?

I've been selling my textbooks, old videogames, and a few miscellaneous things.

1. Open an Amazon seller account. For individual sellers there is no monthly fee. For professional accounts it's $40/month.
2. Go to your inventory, click "add a product".
3. Enter the item name or barcode number. The exact item you're trying to sell should come up.
4. Click "see all product details" to get a feel for the pricing of the item. When you're ready to price it, click "sell yours"
5. There are 3 things to input at this point: The condition, the selling price, and quantity. When you enter the condition, the lowest price offer will automatically come up as a reference. There's also a box to describe the condition in more detail.
6. Click "save and finish" and wait. The time it takes to sell has varied for me. I've sold some school supplies within minutes, a 2010 textbook in 1 day, and videogames in 1-2 days.
7. Once something has sold you will receive an email saying the item is ready to be shipped. Go to the unshipped page, print out a packing slip, and buy shipping right online! The shipping is incredibly cheap compared to a post office too. Pack up your item and you're done.

Each item takes me approximately 10 minutes to do everything - listing, buying shipping, packing, and dropping off at the PO

I agree with this. Craigslist is good for local selling. It's tough to ship big items. Amazon doesn't have EVERYTHING like antiques and such, but it has a LOT of stuff.

Edit: Thanks for the bigwords.com reference. I looked at the things I was selling and I'm going to keep them on Amazon!

I resell on ebay. I have made enough to cover my basic annual expenses with some weekly part time work. I sell used clothing. It makes it possible to save most of my normal income. It is not passive income, but helped me get to FI a lot faster. Side benefit ... I find some really nice clothing for myself along the way.

My husband makes about 30k a year selling on Amazon. He sells used collectibles that he finds at garage sales and flea markets. Our 2 car garage is packed to the brim!

Wow! Yeah, I hit up a tag sale today looking for things to sell! It's pretty fun going through a lot of junk and finding something of value. You see a lot of cool things along the way.

Moving to a new office, I made about $250 on books I wasn't using and didn't feel like lugging around, through the Amazon trade-in process...very slick.

I've had great and horrible results with Amazon.   One one hand,  a new high-end projector sold quickly for a good price.  On the other had I've sold books for $2.99 - 5.99 and had 95% taken as the fee,  leaving pennies.    I did get reasonable returns on a few books and hard drives.

Ebay works well for the bicycle, motorcycle, and occasional clothing I've sold.  I do get some returns on non-returnable items, and a few claims that items were incorrect or missing parts.  Sometimes they are correct, a few times I think I've been scammed.  Fortunately it is rare enough to absorb the loss.

Craigslist works the best for bigger items like bicycles.   Oddly enough,  500G hard drives sell well enough on Ebay but not at all on CL.

I started selling on Amazon last October. By continually reinvesting my profits into more inventory, I've managed to put myself into a position where I'm able to leave my full time 55+ hour per week job at the end of this month and focus exclusively on selling via fba. There's no limit to the income you can make selling online if you're willing to put the time and effort into it.
