Air filtration/purification for one room
« on: October 18, 2018, 07:56:50 PM »
We want a small, portable filter for a bedroom, that we might be able to take on road trips. I want something to remove mostly dust, but also various allergens, particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, and all the other unspeakably horrific stuff hanging around in the SoCal air.

I've seen these Dyson units seem highly rated, but go for $400-600+ Also, they employ expensive filters. I would be willing to pay more upfront to lower recurring filter costs later on.

Any suggestions appreciated? Have you been using a product that you notice makes a difference in dust accumulation, allergies, overall health??

Thanks!

Winix brand on amazon gets great reviews and filters run about $40 and seem to last for a relatively long time. I always liked Austin Air but over the last few years competitors have entered the market with great prices. I would suggest buying a filter with Hepa and carbon. HEPA for particulates and carbon for VOC removal.

I just go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy something that's a "filter and fan" setup.  I'm perfectly happy with them and they do help filter the air in my office (a rather small space).

I'm sure one of the "We sell $700 air filters and isn't your health worth it?" salesfolks would argue, but... last time I ran into one of those, they were quite upset with me that I wouldn't let them plug their vacuum into a circuit (I was pulling about 12A on a 15A circuit and they would have blown the breaker with their unit), and I haven't seen one since...

+1 to Lhamo's suggestion. I've used them for years and my pollution meter verifies they work fast. The small fan models are perfect for spaces of a couple hundred sqf like bedrooms. I enjoy supporting an enterprise like theirs with a DIY ethic which also makes quality, affordable products.

I also am a Fulbright...something. Was awarded a spot on the Fulbright Specialist Roster in early 2017, but no offers of projects yet!

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions gentlemen. I will look into that one.

This Coway also looks good at about 200$.

Also considering the Winix, as the Coway apparently creates O3, which is already in high enough concentration as it is in the HELL A area.

Just want people to know that if it’s just for allergies/ particulates then HEPA is enough. If you want VOC removal then activated carbon as in the Winix is necessary. IMHO, VOC removal is important.
