I see you and raise you my sister's old kitchen.  If I remember correctly (they pulled out the appliances as soon as they could afford new ones for cash) the refrigerator was avocado, the stove was harvest gold and the prior owners had installed coca-cola red counter tops.  We referred to it as the condiments kitchen (green=relish, gold=mustard & red=ketchup)

That's hilarious! I didn't have any nicknames for the kitchen or bathroom, but a friend who helped me move dubbed the master bedroom The Bordello. It had blood red shag carpet, red velvet curtains, gold foil wallpaper with red velvet flocking (they even covered the closet doors with it), and a mirror the size of Rhode Island on the wall. The bedroom was my first project, curtains, wallpaper, and carpet were pulled out the first weekend I was there. There were beautiful hardwood floors underneath.

Omg this thread is bringing back some memories.  One house we owned was straight out of the swinging early seventies.  One of the bathrooms had long brown shag carpet, a matching burnt orange toilet and sink, a tubular clear plexiglas shower (!), and these bizarre sink fixtures.  The faucet pointed up at an angle (the water came out in an arc) and had kind of a knob on the end of it.  It looked like a penis.  The seller told us proudly that he had bought them in Italy.  The wallpaper was a photograph forest scene.  [Shudder. Especially about the carpet.  Who does that in a bathroom? Gross.]

We gutted that bathroom and DIY'd a clean, safe, 'boring' re-do with white toilet, sink, and tub, and gray tile.

I will never understand carpet in a bathroom or kitchen (my grandmother had the latter). I find wall-to-wall carpet kind of gross anyway, but there’s so much more potential for grossness in those two rooms.

My current home had a carpeted bathroom when I bought it, first project in that house was gutting the bathroom for a redo with white toilet, sink, tub, and gray tile.

Twinsies Trifele!

BTW, I left the building for demo day, I did NOT want to see what was under the carpet. You can't unsee those things.

Fomerly known as something

My current house had part of the master bathroom carpeted.  I came home one day after a work trip to find my Mother had pulled up the carpet before the place I contacted to replace the flooring to get to it.  She felt it was too gross.  My solution to that problem had been to just use the hall bath.  I never actually went into the master bathroom before there was new flooring installed.

Our rentals are a Senior Community and a lot of the homes had carpeted baths. One of ours still does. The water closet is tiled, but the section between the shower and sink has carpet. It flows through to a large walk-in closet. When we're fully RE and the tenant leaves, we'll figure out what to do with it. She doesn't mind it, says its easier on the feet and reduces the chance of tripping, so it stays for now. Ugh.

I always liked to idly look at house listings, and there was one, that, well the rest of the house looked relatively normal but dated, but the basement looked like someone might have filmed 70's pornos in it. The basement had wall to wall carpet, wall AND ceiling mirrors, a bed, and a giant tub with carpet right up to it. The kind of decorating that makes you go, hmmm.

Now you have an excuse to watch every 70's porno ever made, to see if you can catch that basement.

For some reason, my grandparents had carpet put in their bathroom the last time they changed it out (mid to late 90s, maybe).  When my husband and I moved in, we ripped it out of the bathroom in <24 hours.  Luckily, it had just been cut to fit, so we didn't have to pull out any tacks or anything.  We knew that there was hardwood under the carpet in the dining room/formal living room, but didn't know until we had ripped up 3/4 of it that it had been finished in two different colors (I suspect that my grandfather decided to pay for one can, and one can only, of stain and when it was gone, it was gone, lol).  There were also 5,621,453 tacks in it.  We knew that there was hideous, probably asbestos, tile underneath the rest of the carpet.  We lived with that until a tornado dropped a couple of trees on the house and the insurance paid to take it out and put new hard flooring down and refinish the hardwood.

But the winner is still this old house on pbs.

Agreed. TOH combined with Norm on the New Yankee Workshop is my kind of viewing.
Their language and episode structure was really relaxing, nothing like the hyper-dramatic spastic HGTV shows.

You are so right.

I always took the Holmes guy at face value. Assumed he knew what was best. Seems like every problem they solved had a huge solution. Made for entertaining tv for me.

Upstairs faucet leaking? Sure, no sweat. Let's replace the foundation and lift the house 18". ;)

Carpet is nice in limited quantities. Area rugs are better b/c they can be discarded if truly ruined. I had a relative that had carpet in the bathroom and the kitchen! They kept it clean somehow.

Our current house has half carpet in the master bath. Its going away once a few other home tasks are complete. Looks okay despite its probable age of about a decade. We prefer to towel off over tile rather than carpet.
