Account Overdrawn for Maintenance Fees
« on: August 11, 2019, 05:11:51 PM »
Hi, what happens if checking account is overdrawn because of maintenance fees? Is there a law preventing banks to charge the fees indefinitely? Would an account be closed in this case? Thank you!

I think they would send you to collections eventually. I'd go speak to the bank and ask for some goodwill.

You can usually get at least one of the fees refunded as a goodwill gesture (just like credit card companies will remove bad marks on your credit report if you ask nicely.) The best way to avoid this problem is to always have extra in your bank account by increasing your income and cutting your spending.

I had this happen with an account I opened to pay a HELOC which I hadn't borrowed any money from.  Since I wasn't making any payments on the HELOC I hadn't put any money in the account and they started charging me a monthly fee.  I called and they did a one time fee wave.
