A Thing A Month
« on: April 12, 2016, 10:25:06 AM »
I was reading through the "As your attorney" thread and that inspired me to start this one. At the end of last year I realized the list of big intimidating things I "should" do was getting out of hand and increasingly becoming "must" do items while at the same time not being hair-on-fire urgent. They're also usually boring and tedious, but having them done will improve my quality of life. I came up with the idea of trying to tackle one big thing per month.

January. Update financial information: Technology edition. Update Quicken (it had been about six months since the last update). Figure out how to get the credit union and Quicken to talk to each other again after the CU's software update.
February. Update financial information: Numbers edition. Use Quicken to do reassess where our budget is these days since we had a baby last year. I also did a case study here.
March. Car insurance. Revisit coverages, shop around.
April. Get wills set up, POA, healthcare POA, etc. We started this process a few years ago but didn't finish. We also need to figure out guardians for the kiddo.
May. Homeowners insurance. See if anything needs to be updated.
June. Retirement savings. Revisit 401k allocations. Look into opening an IRA.
July. Back up everything. Revisit how our data is automatically backed up, possibly tweak the system. There's a couple of things I know aren't backed up (like all the baby photos) so I have them on my phone and on my computer. I'd really like to clear the space on my phone, so I need to make sure my computer is backed up.

The list above is specific to my situation of course but I thought it might be helpful to other people. What else? Scheduling and getting a physical? Investigating to see if it's worth refinancing your mortgage? Getting life insurance?

Nurse here, so my advice won't be surprising, but I think a health month is a great idea. Get your labs drawn, have a physical, "audit" your exercise, nutrition, sleep, and stress relief habits. Obviously you won't FIX everything in one month, but it's incredible to me how many people have never stopped to reflect... maybe if I get my sleep apnea checked, I won't be so tired all the time! I think that's some of the best advice possible: if you snore, and you think you may have sleep apnea, please for the love of god tell your doctor and get a sleep study.

I should go add that to the other thread, lol.
