A nice surprise
« on: February 10, 2015, 06:11:12 PM »
We were at Sams Club last week, and I spent $60 dollars.  When I checked out, the clerk said "you have $70 in cashback rewards, do you want to use that to pay for todays purchase".  Sure!  I didn't know that we earned cash back on our purchases.  (only for the plus membership.) The membership did cost $100 but I got a $25 gift card when I bought it.  The gasoline there is usually 10 cents a gallon cheaper than anywhere else, so the savings on gas alone pays for our membership.

Cash back is nice, isn't it?  Buying in bulk is even nicer, and provides a steady little stream of spending maximizations throughout the year.  But yeah, an unexpected free trip to Sams Club - can't beat that.

The Cash Rewards is basically a 2% rebate for Plus members ($100/year).

A basic membership is only $45, so it's only after a Plus member spends $2750 at Sam's Club does he/she break even for upgrading and begins to actually benefit from this rebate. (2% * $2750 = $55).

Very important to note. Make sure to downgrade if it's not worth it for you!

thank you, but I do spend well more than that between gas for two cars and our groceries.  I can only drink bottled water (an actual medical condition) so I have to buy a case of water every week or so.

Question for you about paying with your rebate, by paying with your rebate are you foregoing the rebate you would have earned on your $60 purchases.

I don't have a Sam's club membership, but I do have a Costco one.  Annually Am Ex sends me a check for my cash back earnings from my Am Ex spending.  It's a "check" that has to be cashed or spent at Costco.  So I go to Costco and get the actual greenbacks, then do whatever shopping I'm there to do and pay with my Am Ex to earn more cash back.  Then I take the cash rebate and deposit it at the bank.

Yes, I get that it's nice to not actually have to run my credit card thru the machine, but if I already have the cash in the bank to cover the charges and can earn more cash cash.  I'll take the cash and earn even more cash back.

Hope that makes sense.  Don't know if it will apply to you too at Sam's Club, but I hope it does.  Cause who doesn't just love that cash back feature.

Taking the cash is best. But I'm not going to lose sleep over .04% of what I spend at Sam's. 😂

I was just thinking about my own Plus membership again and I think I may be barely breaking even for the extra cost. Not all Sam's Club purchases generate the Cash Rewards:

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
