Using A/C unnecessarily
« on: March 07, 2013, 11:37:22 AM »
I see people using A/C in their car when outside is cold all the time. Why are they wasting all that gas for nothing? So stupid!!

My boyfriend runs the A/C in his car year-round. We live in Washington state and it hasn't gone above 60 F since October, so I'm not really sure what we need the A/C for exactly...

I don't want to rationalize for them... but the AC does dry the air.  In some climates this really helps window fogging.

Personally, I do use the compressor ad-hoc for defrost in the winter months.

I can't run the heat here in the SF Bay Area without also running the A/C.  The windows fog up.  The A/C dehumidifies the car.  Haven't looked at the Corolla's manual to see what the recommendation is, but that recommendation has been in the owner's manual for several previous cars.

Some cars force the A/C compressor to run when you have the air in defrost mode.

Yeah, my 2001 Lexus automatically turns on the A/C when defrost mode comes on. You can turn it off but I'm sure a lot of people don't. If you do turn it off, the windows can fog up pretty quickly depending on the humidity.

In my cars, I can't even turn the A/C off in defrost mode.
