A call for help for a bad ass non-profit helping refugees
« on: December 02, 2017, 08:24:40 AM »
I was recently reading an article about refugees sold as slaves in Libya.  While I wish this article was from 200 years ago, it wasn't.  It's happening right now and it brought tears to my eyes.

After a little digging on how I could help refugees, my sister introduced me to her friend Seth Stanton.  Seth is an optometrist by day and a little over a year ago turned his hobby of credit card churning to accumulate frequent flier miles into a non-profit that uses donated airline miles to help refugees and asylees get to a safe place.

His website will tell you more: Miles4Migrants.org
Already in their first year of operation they've helped change the lives of so many families.  Be sure to click on "Successes" to read a few of the amazing yet heart-wrenching stories.

I'm posting this as a request for help in the following ways:
-If you have frequent flier miles you can donate them on the website, www.Miles4Migrants.org
-If you don't have frequent flier miles, you can instead donate money that goes to cover other fees associated with flights for refugees (Seth and the other M4M members are completely volunteer and earn no money for their efforts.)  All donations are tax deductible in the US.
-Possibly most importantly, do any of you have ideas for how to spread the word about Miles4Migrants?  If you have expertise in this area there's possibly a volunteer opportunity for you to share your badassity and help out.  There are people in need, right now, waiting to fly away from unsafe areas, and the more people that know about the option to donate their airline miles, the more Seth and his group can help.  Do you know how to spread the word about this non-profit to the masses?

Thanks in advance for your help!  Please post any questions you have.  Seth said he'd be happy to make a new account on the MMM forum and personally answer your questions.  He is very transparent about what they do, one of the many reasons I love their organization.

Hey everyone.  I'm Seth.  Ryan did a pretty good job of covering our basics.  I'll add in a couple of things: First, we're currently doing refugee family reunions, for the most part.  This is because there is a streamlined process for those that are recognized as refugees in the "normal" way by UNHCR where they receive flight assistance from IOM upon getting a resettlement assignment.  What this does not take into account, however, is the massive number of people who have been separated from their families around the world, and where one family member has received refugee status but the others are still stuck somewhere else.  Our "average" case goes something like, "Dad/oldest brother went overland from Syria/Afghanistan/Iran to UK/Belgium/Sweden and asked for asylum.  Refugee asylum was granted.  He then submitted paperwork for his wife/wife and kids/parents and siblings to join him.  This was also granted.  Now he has no money to actually pay for the expenses of plane travel to bring his family.  The family members, meanwhile, are technically not refugees until they enter their new country and apply for asylum themselves.  In the meantime they are simply family reunion visa recipients.  Because of this, they are ineligible for travel assistance from IOM.

Miles4Migrants, at this point, is just over a year old and our stats look like this:

Total miles used 1,664,751
Total money used $5,476.93
Total cash value of flights $42,760.40
Total people flown 86

We've flown people from 12 countries of origin (DR Congo, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Ukraine, Jamaica, Burundi, Somalia) at this point, with 4 recipient countries all within Europe (UK, Sweden, Belgium, Germany) as our recipients' destinations.

I would like to support, but being on MMM, I would like a donation tax credit... is there any program similar (maybe that works with you) in Canada?

I believe that if you make any money from a US source you can use your donation to our charity to offset it on your Canadian tax return.

There are no other charities like ours anywhere, as far as I know.

Oh, and by the way, you can donate Aeroplan miles in any denomination (minimum 1000 miles) at this link: https://beyondmiles.aeroplan.com/eng/charity/1178

Wow, this is an incredibly great idea!!

Thanks for posting about it.  Glad to see someone doing this in New Orleans as well.

Thank you for posting, RyFI. Large corporations often donate to charity, because they are part of a larger society. Airlines are in a position to offer a few seats per flight to refugees, particularly if the plane is not full and those seats would have been empty otherwise. From what you say, it seems this does not happen, which does surprise me. Airlines could rely on a specialized charity to identify potential family reunion passengers at particular ports, and the airline might either offer seats for free, or at a discounted price.
