Exciting to see us approaching sub 20 month time-frames. Can't freaking wait!

I'm still at the "little more than two years" rather than the "little less than two years" point, but I'm looking forward to getting to the 100 weeks to go point. I feel like I should make a countdown calendar. On the rougher days, having that knowledge could make everything more palatable.

I've started making plans about things in the run-up to FIRE, because we have a bunch of cascading plans that are related to our rough date 2 years from now (we don't have an exact day or even month, since we may have at least one job change and move coming up, but expect that it'll be about 2 years):

* Figuring out what metropolitan area we want to live in after FIRE -- we've been working on this for years now but still haven't quite reached a decision
* Baby-related stuff -- we're planning to have our first child, ideally, right before FIRE so we can take advantage of generous parental leave policies provided by our employers. (This will be hard to deal with, since we're planning a cross-country move shortly after that, but I'm anxious about Biology and will be happier if we get started early.) This means it's almost time for us to start learning as much as possible about parenting, now ...
* Sorting out what communities we want to be part of, what matters to us in life, what kinds of things we want to do in FIRE so that we can start doing those now and not feel too adrift when we get there.

One thing that's bugging me is that ideally, I'd like to do some independent software development after FIRE; making new businesses, freelance, something of that sort -- but I can't really start now, because my employer has a very restrictive IP agreement that makes it difficult for them not to own everything I make.

Talking to DH today I realized I have just 2 more of each holiday to work.  Only two christmases where I have to juggle all staff calendars hoping to have days off, only 2 more thanksgivings where I have to squash in all the shopping and cooking into the infinitesimal minutes between work stuff, kid stuff and house stuff.  I am so excited.  Thinking of it this way makes RE seem so much closer.

Twice this weekend I found myself saying out loud, "in a little less than two years when we retire".  Its exciting and terrifying both at the same time.  Its also becoming an important part of our decision making process:  Do I need to replace this piece of my work wardrobe?  Which renovation project should we tackle next?  The answers in both cases were based in part on this new, less than two year count down.

I'm so excited to be at that place too.  I tossed a worn out pair of black pumps and thought "I don't need to buy anymore of these!"

Love that!  And, same here.  Any new clothes are now viewed with the lens of "how is this going to be useful to me once I no longer need it for business attire?"

And there's the flip side:  Instead of going the extra mile to volunteer for this and that hoping that will earn me a few extra breadcrumbs from the overlords above, I'm now much more likely to say "heck with it.  Spending time with my <name family member or friend here> is going to be a lot more important in the long run."

Interesting that this 2022 group doesn't seem to have a running list of members.  Does anyone want to start one?  I'm in (jumping over from 2023).

I was all set to buy no more work clothes but then had a moment of alcohol-fulled forgetfulness and left my suit jacket in a taxi... So starting from now I'm planning to buy no more work clothes.

I'm game to try. I have a slow day at the office tomorrow, so I'll see if I can start pulling one together.

Would love to hear how the cohort members are dealing with the psychology of a goal that seems really close but still really far.

In my personal financial spreadsheet (many spreadsheets in one workbook), I have a page where I track my liquid stash by month.  Columns are Date, Months to go, DAYS to go, Stash, a few other things, then Comments.  My very first entry was from 2017, when my work hit a particularly low point.  My comment in that first row is "waiting seemed undoable, but 60 months is the length of a car loan.  This is so do-able".

I read that comment A LOT.

Also, the worksheet tab is titled "1878 days to FI", but now it's really 692 days. I don't update the tab name.

That's more names than I thought in our cohort list. I hope folks that haven't posted in a while come and check in that they still plan to stay in 2022, or if they OLY or OMY'd.  I personally started in 2025, then went to 2024, and then gladly landed here in 2022.

I guess I should say that our projected date is something around 05/22. (Couple scheduling things are up in the air, so we're not totally sure yet.)

Eurotexan here! Still pushing for 2022, haven’t figured out exactly when but most likely end of May so I can ease into the summer. Plus it’s my daughter’s summer between school and college. Job still a grind but the stash is certainly taking off now

It looks like we will more likely be 2024. Our spending has crept up a bit (mostly intentionally). Plus, 2024 will be 20 years in my profession and also 20 years before our full SS age. Good mid point pivot.

We have a target date of June 2022.

On a good day, DH thinks he can make it 4 more years and enjoy the new projects. On a bad day, he talks about not renewing our lease this summer.

I am shooting for July 24th 2022, but will see how the markets evolve and how my new job (that I will hopefully find before mid 2020) pans out. Same company so i know kind of what to expect but it is a completely different division.

We are in for April 2022! Well, hubby is. I'm returning to work this fall after an extended hiatus as a SAHM. Amazingly, I snagged a full-time position with full-benefits right out of the gate. If all goes well, then hubby will leave his high-pay, high-stress job after his spring bonus season in 2022. That is also roughly when we'll reach FI. I intend to keep working for several years if possible to maintain excellent affordable healthcare as we have multiple complex medical needs in our family.

Super excited last week to learn that the 2nd annual bonus I planned to stick around for in July, 2022 will now be paid in April annually starting this year.  So I can shave at least two months off my date!  I have to work out some scenarios to land on a specific date, but I'm thinking it will now be mid-May if I'd like to give two months notice starting in mid-March when my first bonus is paid.  The two are pretty similar in amounts, so it's worth making sure I will get both of them.  This cut down my notice period from four months to two months which I feel is way easier to suffer through.  It's unlikely they would hire a replacement for me in two months, but that gives me some leverage to arrange for some kind of package on my way out to help them during a transition period, if I'm feeling up to it (maybe I won't).

For now my target date can be changed from 7-15-22 to mid-May and I'll firm up an exact day at a later time.

I also moved to the 2021 group.  I don't see anything right now that will make me move back to 2022 but since that's a long time away, I'd like to keep one foot here.  Also, I love the other groups' lists that show the OLY folks.  I hope to be that so please don't take my name off the list!

Going with May 12, 2022 as the final day of work. We are on a 9/80 schedule so this would be the last day of the pay cycle and ensure I get two full checks in May plus payout of my accrued vacation hours.

We probably won't make 2022.  Probably drop back a couple of years as we have changed a few things in our lives.  We will hopefully be back in our home state by then however, and that will be almost as good as retirement.

I also moved to the 2021 group.  I don't see anything right now that will make me move back to 2022 but since that's a long time away, I'd like to keep one foot here.  Also, I love the other groups' lists that show the OLY folks.  I hope to be that so please don't take my name off the list!

I gotcha, no worries. I am keeping up with everyone's updates on the master Excel list and will post periodically. 🙂

Thanks for creating the list @rachaelandthegoose! Our family plans are coming together, and now it looks like we're going to take a two-year sabbatical/mini-retirement from summer 2021- summer 2023. We should be at Lean FI next summer, so this will give us a chance to do a "dry run" on early retirement, and see how we enjoy filling our time with projects, more family time, and basically doing whatever we want for two years, structured loosely around our daughter's school schedule. I am incredibly fortunate that I can take a two-year leave from my job.

It will also be interesting to experience living off our investments for a while. We may end up doing some remote work, but it will be 100% optional. We have the savings set aside for two years of expenses. I really need a break from work, so I absolutely can't wait for this opportunity.

I guess that means remove us from the 2022 class list, because we're no longer on the "straight line to FI" path. We've decided that for our family a (slightly longer) winding road is just fine :-)))

I've never officially joined any single cohort yet, but 2022 is looking unlikely for me.

Your plans sound very exciting! I hope your two year sabbatical is wonderful. And who knows? Maybe your "smoke break" will turn into full fledged FIRE. :)

Thanks @rachaelandthegoose! We're staying open to the idea of going full FIRE in two years, but we can only do two years in France for visa/green card reasons. The COL in France is much lower, so I think we'll be French FI by then, but not FI for the HCOL area we'll be returning to. I can't quite sell my wife on the idea of moving to a cheaper part of the states. She's already been very open minded, so I'm not pushing my luck.

@rachaelandthegoose Thanks for this but I think I was way too ambitious and my original plan had me working part time for a couple years but now I realise I don’t want that as a must do, just as a maybe do. So now I’m on the 2025 path. You can please remove me from this one. Thank you.

Looking at whats happening in Italy I think 2022 is going to be anything but a dream now.

The ramifications of this event are going to take years to clear up IMHO.  I think we could possibly see a recovery period of years rather than months for the markets.

I have moved as much into cash as I can but jeez this is going to be rough.

I moved to the 2021 cohort.  Hoping to stay there, but still need a lot of things to go right over the next 1.5 years.

These things...have not been going right.  Not giving up on 2021 yet, but I'll need a market recovery and a bit of growth besides.

Come hell or high water I plan on losing my job May '22. I don't know what comes next, except that it's anything but this career.

I'm back to 2022!  Certainly not a joyous occasion for me, but I don't see 2021 happening anymore.

I'll shoot for 7/1/2022.

I'm with you @salt cured. We're continuing with our current jobs until May '22 for very well-considered reasons, but frankly I'm already pretty saddened by how much of my life up to this point has been clocking time in an office, laughing at my bosses' unfunny comedy routines, sacrificing my health and slowly getting older. DH and I both feel that May '22 is the max we're willing to work to. I may work a few months more for a little extra liquid cash if we're in the process of relocated/selling the house, etc, while DH spiffs up the house, but that's it.

If the 'stache isn't where we hope it'll be by May '22, we may move to another area or other jobs. Anything to break this pattern and live more meaningful lives. I was already starting to slowly build up our cash reserves for ER, so I'll keep doing that, but we'll keep putting our normal sums into the market as long as we're both still gainfully employed, too. We're staying the course.

We planned to sell our house this summer but are actually considering selling sooner now, that excites me as we'd be throwing a hell of a lot of money in the market at this time. This area we live in has all time high real estate prices so it feels like great opportunity to sell one asset class high and buy another low.

Time to get serious with the cleaning, decluttering and painting I suppose :-)

Anecdotally, a couple of houses just hit the market here in Park City for ~20% less than they would have listed for 6 months ago...
