Title: Useful UK / Ireland / location agnostic blogs
Post by: Playing with Fire UK on July 30, 2017, 09:42:39 AM
Please share!

I find the 'new posts' feature of the RIT (http://www.retirementinvestingtoday.com/) site helpful. RIT has recently reached FI and decided to work for an extra year.

Not a reader personally (one can only follow so many blogs and I'm all booked up!) but I've heard good things about Simple Living in Suffolk

The links here http://thefirestarter.co.uk/ will take you to a lot of UK blogs.

I second TheFirestarter, and also follow Quietly Saving and The Finance Zombie.

Monevator?

Take a look at s-l-i-s' blogroll too, I think he has links to a fair few others.

Monevator is not just about FIRE and at least one of the writers has poured scorn on the idea of retiring early being a good thing. It's certainly one of the best UK personal finance websites though and usually has answers to a lot of the questions which get posed on here.

I like simply living in suffolk because I work in the same profession that ermine did and have a lot of similar interests. I particularly like that he posts long, thoughtful posts with a lot of interesting things to think about, even if I don't always agree with his conclusions. He's not trying to sell you his ebooks or matched betting software either.

A few others.

http://www.cantankerous.life/ (which I often disagree quite strongly with)

I think we like the same blogs :-) I used to be in the same field as Ermine too, although I changed careers completely 15 years ago.

I find Jim at SHMD particularly interesting as he went back to work mostly due to the psychological side of the RE experience. I know I've focused almost exclusively on the money side myself, so I am wondering how pulling the trigger will affect me mentally. It won't involve going back to work though for sure.

Personally I follow:

http://financiallyfreeby40.com/ (http://financiallyfreeby40.com/)
http://thefirestarter.co.uk/ (http://thefirestarter.co.uk/)
http://simple-living-in-suffolk.co.uk/ (http://simple-living-in-suffolk.co.uk/)
http://quietlysaving.co.uk/ (http://quietlysaving.co.uk/)
https://firevlondon.com/ (https://firevlondon.com/)
https://sexhealthmoneydeath.com/ (https://sexhealthmoneydeath.com/)

There seem to be alot more UK blogs starting up recently however most tend to die out after a few months to turn into what are obviously just paid-posts spamming.

Great recommendations!

I found www.frugalqueen.co.uk and have really enjoyed reading through her progress.

I'll chip in with a recommendation for mortgagefreeinthree (http://mortgagefreeinthree.com/blog/). Not much posting happening anymore but I got a lot out of reading through the archive a couple of years ago. If you're UK-based in particular the armageddon cupboard (filled with lots of food from Approved Food) posts might be interesting. This is the blog that I have made more recipes from than any other, I think, and I've used several of the knitting patterns to make very cheap presents, too.

Had a quick flick through this one - interesting! Breadonomics is very much my style. Slightly hard to navigate, though, as I don't want to read the whole archive and can't find anywhere obvious with all the category filters listed together. And the Mumsnet-style writing grates a little...

Has anyone ever shopped at Approved Foods? I've had a look before and all the significant discounts seem to be on junk.

I ordered from Approved Foods once. It must have been more than six years ago, because I wasn't living at this address then. We still haven't finished the bulgur wheat I bought at £1 for five 500g boxes. (It is many years past its best before date, but we've never had weevils and I hate food waste.) But whenever I've gone back to the site since then I've struggled to find much that isn't rubbish, and even the rubbish is often cheaper in Poundstretcher or using conventional supermarket budget brands.
