I’ve never heard of that 5:2 concept before (save for 5 days and only spend on 2). What a bizarre concept. There is no point in spending nothing five days a week if 95% of income is blown on the other two. Not to mention how you’re meant to organise your direct debits to fit with this.

The 5:2 thing wouldn't really work for me either.  I do try to keep to a certain amount of 'no spend days' each month though.

I find it an extra little boost to stop me going to the shop for something as small as a snickers etc.

I've heard of the 5:2 thing as a way of getting out of a real hair-on-fire emergency, but definitely not a sustainable long term strategy.  It did give rise to my favourite comment on that article though, on the lines of '5 days without spending a penny?  I have to get up to do it 3 times every night'

I see the Guardian and Telegraph also have FIRE articles now. Judging by the comments I don't think we're going mainstream! I fear friends will ask me if I've seen articles on this though. I'm such a terrible liar, I'll blush and they'll know I'm into it.

The comments are hilarious! “I earn 200k but as living costs are so expensive these days I can only save 5%”!! Two years on that salary and you could be done

Yep that’s a good one Distant dreamer. I also liked the comment that an annual salary of £25k is poor. The comments are all over the place in terms of their interpretation of the concept.

Yes I saw that one too....borderline poverty. On one hand I find it all funny and on the other, rather sad. It saddens me that people can see no other route in life than working all your days or that happiness cannot be found without a massive tv, eating out etc etc. I think most people genuinely believe it is not possible unless you come from wealth.

I've heard of the 5:2 diet, but never 5:2 for money before... o.O

If it's in the Daily Mail, I suppose it will reach a larger proportion of the population, at least, even though they do tend to sensationalise everything.
