ZERO data usage on cell phone for a month
« on: September 17, 2018, 12:33:35 PM »
I switched to Project Fi in March. After my first month I decided to turn the data off on my phone. I can still send and receive texts and calls. Everything that requires data I wait til I'm on wifi. I haven't used any data since my first billing cycle, except when I went to France. Not only does this save me money (since I'm still on rebate and support credits, my bill has been $0 the last 3 months, before that it was just $3.xx for the taxes), but more importantly it saves me time and detaches me from my phone. I've found that I don't waste time during the day. And after about a month doing this, I've gotten used to it.

How long can you go without using data?Try it for a month. Wi-fi is ok.

An alternative, if you have a few apps that do need data, is to simply turn off cell data for most of the apps on your phone.

My wife and I chat over Hangouts, which frequently involves updates while I'm out somewhere.

But, yes, you can use very far down, especially if texting is your primary communication.

zero data, zero data plan, 1st smartphone/1st owned cell phone.
Doesn't count for the purpose of this challenge, see previous sentence..

For those with cell phones, this is a real throw-down-the-gauntlet challenge.

Just turn cellular data OFF.  You still get data in most public spaces via wifi.

edit for clarity.

Yep, that's pretty much what I do. I have the NetGuard app that I use to turn data off on most apps. I leave that firewall on all the time. But I find that just turning data off in the settings of the phone works better. But when I'm traveling internationally and need data I turn the data on and the netguard app protects me from those other data hog apps that might be running in the background or when I accidentally open them.

Personally, I prefer to binge 100mb of data in 1-3 days. So. Much
 Joy.

And then I'm leaning to.ditchimg wifi in a few days. Eep

I haven’t used more than 100mb of data per month since I switched to Ting (I can’t even remember when that was! 2015?).  Oh, and I don’t use cell text messaging, I funnel everything through Hangouts for free messaging over wifi.

This year, I hadn’t used any data since January until this month.  But, I was visiting my family and my dad doesn’t have wifi, and I wanted to check on texts from my mom.  So I ruined my 7 month streak!

Thank goodness my gym finally got wifi!  Sometimes I need to finalize plans with friends or check a work email if I leave early.  Otherwise, I just don’t use my phone when I’m out.  It’s pretty nice most of the time.

It definitely is nice to not be on my phone when I'm out. But there are times I wanna check something and I'll go to a wifi spot at work just to do that :D
