The Subscription Expenses Round-Up
« on: August 13, 2020, 10:24:28 AM »
Apologies if this is already a thing somewhere else! I searched but did not find any recent threads.

I just took stock of all of my various subscription services that I realized I've accumulated over my few years of adulting. I found out I'm paying almost $2K/year for all these little conveniences and necessities 🤯 (I edited to remove car insurance)

Now, I don't have acute regret for any of these on their own, but added up, that figure makes me want to do better! I would love to hear how y'all are keeping it dialed in and tightened up, so that I might do so myself.

Here's my monthly/yearly subscription round-up:

ExpenseMonthly  Annual
AAA$6$75
New York Times$5$60
Washington Post$3$40
Razors delivered$9$108
Prescriptions delivered$22$264
Skillshare$8$99
Curiosity Stream$3$36
Netflix$15$180
HBO$15$180
Spotify$10$120
Credit card #1 fee (Venture)$8$95
Credit card #2 fee (CSR)$41$495
White glove medical membership  $17$199
Total...$162$1,947

Dang! Obviously some of these are heavier hitters than others. I think I might kick CSR and Venture both next year in favor of a simpler, fee-free product. Even with the $300 from Chase, the fee is going up next year and I think I'm too frugal and infrequent of a traveler already to really maximize the other value. I think keeping track of so many different cards and optimizing their rewards actually just makes me spend more than I would without them. I say that every year, though, so... we'll see.

Skillshare was an accident, but not the worst thing to have access to!

White glove medicine was just because I hate finding new doctors and my first one left... will probably kick next year if I move somewhere smaller and easier to get around.

The news subs were cheap since it's my first year with them. If I can't keep the prices down by calling in, I'll probably drop those before they shoot up in cost.

I feel like my car insurance is too expensive. Not sure if I should have counted it here since it's a legal necessity, but $800/year basic coverage for a car that's worth less than $7K feels steep. It's the cheapest I could find though. I guess with my level of coverage, I'm really just paying to cover anyone else's car that I might hit.

Everything else will probably stay. I share the entertainment with family as kind of a gift. Still, my annual bill should drop by about $1K. Not too shabby!

Our car insurance (nationwide) includes a roadside assistance service, so we haven't used AAA. You should also shop around your car insurance. We went from state farm from nationwide and then back to nationwide and our rates are cheaper than when we started with nationwide. It's been a few years, so I need to do it again. You may also have comprehensive coverage and not need it on an older car.

Car insurance isn't a subscription. It's a legal requirement. Worth shopping around or messing with your coverage but it isn't something you could just drop entirely like the rest of your list.

That is a pretty hefty list. I think we're around $300-400/year for subscription services plus a high fee (~$500) credit card we got for my wife's work travel (pretty poor timing for that...).

Thanks! I just checked my policy. A little over half of the cost is for some pretty generous liability and uninsured motorist coverage, at the urging of my mom. The cost for comprehensive coverage with a $500 deductible is only $15 per 6 months. Collision coverage, on the other hand, is $125 per 6 months, with a $500 deductible. I think I did the math a couple of years ago to see how long it would take to sort of "break even" on my coverage and accepted the extra cost. I can either decline collision coverage or raise the deductible to $1500, saving either $250/year or $100/year.  Basically, right noq I pay Geico $250/year, and in exchange I guess they'll give me $6K if I total my car one day. Can't really wrap my head around the true value of that... I'll have to shop around for the next renewal, though. It's been a while.

It looks like I do have pretty cheap roadside coverage too - I just realized I only got AAA to waive the (more than $75) young driver fees for rental cars! I guess I can kick AAA too.

@RWD My words almost exactly in the OP re:car insurance :) Yep, it's a lot of stuff. I'm excited to simplify.
