Allow me to be first here to congratulate you (from work).

TY!  Even though I hinted it may happen to some of my family and friends, only my son and brother said congrats.  Everyone knew I would be happy with it, yet they all seemed bummed.  I told them they could be happy for me and sad for themselves :).

Congratulations Cash Stache!  Very happy for you.  May your decompression period be short, and the next phase of your life full of peace and happiness.

TY!

I don't know how to respond to your well, thought out congrats except :).

I'm going to try and post my daily feelings.  It may help others understand the transition.  I don't think it will be the same for everyone.  But, I think there will be a lot of common feelings.

Congratulations!  I'm glad you had some warning it was coming.  Even though it is what you wanted, I think the shock could be overwhelming if you're not ready for it.

I look forward to reading about your decompression journey.  I think too many people disappear after FIRE, but hearing from the recently FIRE'd is much of why I follow this thread.  I'm going in early 2018 and trying to figure out how to best mentally prepare.

So I finally did get accepted to the health sharing program. There are no obstacles left for me to FIRE my job. I am going to move this from Friday, September 1, to Monday, October 2. That will give me an extra month of company provided health insurance and allow me to cash in on the latest ESPP program. And then I head off to a 3 week trip to Canada and celebrate at CMC!!! There's no turning back now.

I'm not sure how much longer I can holdoff on announcing at work. I'm dying to just blurt it out now, but prudence would say it's best to wait until the first week of September. That will give almost a month notice.

Well, I woke up this morning just like any other morning.

I opened my phone and looked up the weather report through an app called WTForecast.  It said that today the sun was going to shine out my ass today.  What a great report!  I'm hoping it's just a small ray of sunshine as it might hurt otherwise.  I'm going to make a point to cast a glowing image upon everyone I may encounter today.  Lighten up the shadows as it were.

The next thought which dawned on me was today is the first day in quite some time in which I do not have any obligations to anyone else (excepting family of course).  That is quite a great feeling.  Like sunshine upon my face.

Otherwise, I'm still feeling rather compressed and only through deliberate thought am I capable of reducing the compression.  Don't get me wrong, I'm feeling great and things really couldn't be brighter.  Seemingly, it will take some time to cut the cords which connected me to my PREVIOUS job.  I now have NO job.  That's just awesome.

I also realized I didn't really care what day of the week it was. This is a small but significant dawning.

GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!  Have a great day!

Congrats Cache Stash!

As for a post-FIRE report on me: I've been busying myself with overdue yard work. I started digging out the slope in my backyard for a paver patio. The ground slopes up away from my house and so two sides of the patio will have a retaining wall, about 3 feet at the tallest point. I've been digging it out with nothing but a shovel and a wheelborrow...I think I have over extended myself though. I was all worried about sore muscles, which hasn't been a problem (I ramped up from working about 2 hours a day on it to 6 hours), but I think I've actually caused carpal tunnel. Thankfully, I have a short four day vacation coming up, so I'm taking a break anyway.

I would have hated to do this project while working, but I rather enjoy it. I get most of my work done in the morning while it is cooler, then shower and relax the rest of the day.

Well, it's a done deal.  Everything went smoothly.  I let them know that it would be the easiest layoff they have ever been involved in and that I wanted to give them (boss and HR) a hug and kiss.

Made a bunch of phone calls.  Working on decompression.  I have the feeling, like others have noted, it may take awhile.  Hopefully it will be less than a month. DW cried (even though she knew it was coming).  I think she is scared of the unknown as it has been 22 years since I haven't been free of the bondage of servitude.  Additionally, she isn't interested in learning anything about our finances.

My letter states my freedom begins today!  Would someone please update my status to

FIRE'd

Congrats!!! :D

Post-FIRE update:

I haven't sat still long enough to even think about decompression!

1.5 hours after FIRE I was packed up and driving out of the city. Took the forestry trunk road along the mountains north instead of the highway. VERY nice drive. I couldn't take the whole thing or it would have added another 6 hours to the drive, but some day I'll come back and do the south portion too. Camped out in the truck (I don't think I posted a pic of my current setup in my journal yet! But I should), went to a family reunion for a few days, spent 1 night at my moms then left for a 13 day canoe trip (pics in journal), recovered and cleaned up for 3 nights at my moms, then drove back home for the past 3 nights. Scrambling to deal with the jungle my yard has turned in to and visit friends before I leave in 8 more hours for the Cook Islands for 3 weeks, for scuba diving certification, sailing, kite surfing (maybe), and hopefully learning about outrigger sailing canoes so I can build one this winter.

Today marks my 6th day of RE.  I've recently been using a response for everything of "Because today is Saturday".

My wife asked when I was going to the store and I responded "at 10am because it's Saturday".
She wanted to do some yard work and needed help and I responded "We can do that tomorrow because it's Saturday.

She now laughs every time I use it.  I'm sure it will get old but for now it works because today is Saturday.

I'm feeling much more decompressed.  Although I can't tell what percentage I'm at because I don't know what it will feel like when full decompression sets in.  It kind of feels like 20% but we shall see.  I think about retirement funds about once or twice a day and each time I feel like everything will work out just fine so I'm feeling pretty good about things.  I have lots of paperwork and things to do in order to "setup" for retirement such as rolling 401(k) into IRA, selling all holdings in brokerage account associated with said 401(k), COBRA paperwork, a cash balance pension plan distribution being rolled over into IRA, looking into getting a qualified fee only financial planner to peer check my retirement assumptions, applying for a new passport (expires early next year), estate planning, updating wills, looking into setting up a family trust, blah, blah, blah, blah.

I think decompression will more rapid once all of the dust settles from all of the "to-do's" get done.  For now it just keeps making me question my decision to RE.

Taking a trip to California end of Sept to visit family and look into maybe making an App with my brother (could produce extra income).  I think the trip will certainly help with decompression.

Today's weather report was "It's wonderful outside.  Looks like it's time for a fun time in FannyTown.  Do it up!"

All in all, I'm currently feeling more calm and content.  Kind of like getting washed up on a beach after a storm and the weather is sunny, 72 degrees and fabulous but I'm tired and bedraggled.  I'm slowly gaining energy day by day.  I have noticed that each day is much longer than it was before.  There seems to be so much time to get things done.  It's awesome and it is leading me to taking my time with things.  Less sense of urgency.  I started driving slower and caring about traffic less.  Maybe I'll become a Sunday driver every Saturday seven days a week. :)

Good luck to all!  I'll report back when I have anything to add and update the compression thing.

I FIRED on 6/3.  We moved into a fifth wheel, put the house up for sale, and have been out in the mountains in southern Colorado for almost 2 months.  The house is supposed to close tomorrow (fingers crossed!) and we are taking off for a month in Yellowstone in a week.  Then Denver for 2 weeks, flying to CMC, then Utah (Arches, Zion) for early November, family in Louisiana for the holidays and Jan/Feb are booked in Florida.

Definitely still decompressing, figuring out what we are doing.  I had some issues with a big flair of anxiety, initially, but that has gotten a lot better.  I am happy not working, for sure, and the finances are fine.  Definitely still in The Who am I, what do I want to do? stage.  But that's okay.

Closed on six units for rental co #2 on 7/31, and in August we successfully integrated five (5). One is being a jackass and hasn't paid yet, but even with that happening, total returns are great.

Currently lining up new investors and more personal funds to close a bigger package deal with the same seller, anywhere from 6 to 10 properties, in Jan. This will not only bring the company up to sufficient scale to hire a full-time internal manager/mx guy and pay myself something, but also give me a five-figure commission up front to pad the cash stash in my first full month of FIRE. I don't plan on working full-time for the startup, but I do enjoy the work and I plan to help steer things as needed. The difference will be, I do this stuff midmorning in my pajamas instead of after hours, still in my day-job outfit.

We are fleshing out our plan for the end of the year and first month of FIRE. 12/15 is my likely last day, then we take off a couple days later for Argentina with my sister, her husband, and their three kids in tow. They will head back stateside after a little over a week, and we will chill with the fams for a few more days before heading to Tierra del Fuego after New Year's Day. We're spending a total of a week in two different towns, one on a lake and the other along the Beagle Channel, with foot or boat tours booked pretty much every day. We'll wind up with a couple of days in Buenos Aires and fly home mid-Jan after nearly a month total.

I'm putting myself out of work with less liquidity than I like, but I have a lot of cards to play and the rapid growth of my company will give me plenty of opportunities for income if investment proceeds fall short. Plus, this is work I've always wanted to do - not just rentals, but changing the way people use energy by promoting and proliferating new technology. It will be nothing like what I've been doing - I love the work and I'm the HMFIC so everything I dislike about work to date will be missing.

I'm stoked, even though it's nowhere near real yet. I'm still traveling for my job, traveling for training, going through all the motions of career planning and development. A few steps closer, when it starts to hit me, I do expect real fear to come in. I've never held a job this long and I really do love my team, as much as the bureaucracy and the ass-clowns in high places irk me.

Grats to all who've made it so far. I will join you soon!!! :D

I haven't popped into this thread for some time.

Congrats Cache Stash! I FIREd the end of Jan and we finally set sail for slow travel 3/15. We JUST returned to our home area which feels very strange, I've never "camped" so close to home before. We are taking care of annual medical stuff, we will get our fiver repaired under warranty, the truck needs some work and we are going to offload the extra stuff we do not need.

Decompression is still underway for me. I had a HUGE amount of stress due to my day job and medical things. DH worked his A$$ off remodeling our home to sell for top dollar so he is also doing some decompressing of his own (he FIREd in 2011)

I too feel like every day is Saturday. The days just fly by. I cannot believe we've been on the road for just under six months!

Because we changed our environment for FIRE it is probably a bit different as far as decompression goes. I've always loved to camp and sleep really well in any camping environment, tent, back of the truck, in an RV and now in our traveling home. I am not sure how it would have gone had I FIREd while still owning our home. It felt like a huge anchor to us and we so wanted to be rid of it in the end. I will never know how FIREing in a fixed location will be and I am ok with that.

I need to remember to visit here more often for updates! After our stay in our home area we are heading south to Arizona, then Texas. We do have $ set aside for a new residence somewhere in the south and we need to get the search going.

ML - I so badly want to visit the places you are going to, they are where we are used to traveling, but this next part of our journey is more about finding a new place to call home.

I love looking at our graduate list! So many people successfully FIRING. I Wish you all the very best!

here's some of my favorite pics from our travels so far.

Wow what an emotional thread this is. For me FIRE is more of a gradual transition in my self-employment career from having lots of different tasks/jobs to paring it down to jobs that are more convenient and easier to handle. I don't go to an office with a bunch of co-workers whereby I have to get laid off or quit and then have this extreme break from one life into a FIRE life. I can see why the FIRE for many is such a mixed bag of feelings.
On the other hand since my transition is transitional I don't get to take that big trip/vacation upon an immediate FIRE situation like some of you are doing.

Wow guys! Reading the post fire updates is calming the anxiety I didn't even realize I still had. So thank you!

I found MMM about 6 months ago and only started lurking on this forum about 2 months ago after finishing the blog. I'm 29 and do not yet have a tremendous pile of cash sufficient to sustain me indefinitely but I do have two rental units sufficient to support my basic expenses plus a little extra. I have ALWAYS been frugal so I knew that I could  trust my budget at least for the medium term. Which is why I decided to put in my resignation April of 2018. Then, to my surprise and delight, I got the news earlier this week that I was being laid off, with enough transition time, severance and PTO to take me right up to my original FIRE date. My new FIRE date will be October 20th... a few days before my 30th birthday.

I am beyond happy, and feel like I am shedding a huge weight. I've been with roughly the same company (through two acquisitions) for 10 years... my entire adult life. I've made a lot of changes in that time, including a divorce, moving out of state, and becoming a mother so the magnitude of this new change doesn't scare me. Over all I'm feeling a lot of excitement about what the next chapter will bring. All of the possibilities life holds when not shackled to a computer.  So far, my immediate list includes:

Camping trip to celebrate the big three zero
Bathroom remodel
Lots of yard work
General life-admin, affair-ordering
Getting my Real Estate License
Next year putting my current house on the market
Eventually building a house from scratch
Start working in my travel list for when the little ones are older

Then generally building a daily life where I spend more time with family, more time being active, more time preparing good meals and more time saying yes to activities. I feel so grateful to be at this point in my life!

Since FIRE-ing, my hubby and I have moved states, sold one house, bought another, started a new job (same line of work - him), signed up for some classes (different interest - me), took a short weekend trip to the mountains and celebrated with friends and family.  I'm not sure yet why, but it doesn't feel exactly like I expected it would.  Perhaps it's because we really haven't stopped going since giving notice.... Perhaps it's because we spent so much time planning it out and double checking everything.... Perhaps it's just that the reality of it hasn't quite hit yet.... Whatever it is, I'm enjoying every moment of this time living the FIRE'd life setting my own schedule, not reporting to an office.

Some might say it's not really FIRE-ing with hubby having a job, but it's our life, our choice... we say we're FIRE'd.  His job says we can have income, benefits and new contacts in the community.  Sounds like wins to us! :-)

For anyone new reading this forum, there is so much inspiration found in these pages.  The knowledge, uniqueness and creativity of the membership astounds.  Good luck and enjoy your journey!

Since FIREing two weeks ago life has been pretty great but busy since the rest of this year is like a post-fire celebration.

Just got back from two weeks in the Caribbean now off to some more travels tonight.... wooooooo

All of the things that annoyed me in the past seem like nothing now. Not having to work rocks.

Checking in after nearly four months FIRE'd.

My partner has now joined me so we spend a lot of time together which is magnificent and also somewhat challenging as I did have one day a week at home alone, which I really enjoyed. My health is greatly improved, physically and mentally. I'm still adjusting from income earning thinking to retired, no need to continue to acquire money thinking. At various times in my life I've had two or three jobs at a time, now I don't need any work but it's taking me a while to stop thinking about opportunities that I could pursue.

Each day is lovely, very relaxed, a combination of socialising, gardening, housework, volunteering, reading, playing games, cooking. We're downsizing to a new home which we're having built so that takes some energy. Also, we've had two holidays, one to Bali and one to family in Queensland. Fantastic! Planning another 2 week trip for December, probably Laos and Cambodia.  We live in Western Australia so South East Asia is very accessible.

Congratulations to everyone who's resigned, thankfully been laid off or reduced hours.  It's very helpful to hear your stories, as many have said before me, people in my life don't share the same goal so don't appreciate how fabulous it is to achieve what I've been aiming for for 20 years.

Congrats to everyone who has FIREd! I'm checking back in after a long time away and I'm glad to see that so many of you have entered the world of gainful unemployment. Zephyr and Daisy I'm still rooting for you to join us and I'm glad to see that it will be very soon now.

It has been nine months since I walked away from my job and I'm still very happy I did so. On the other hand, it has also been an exhausting nine months with far, far too many trips (9 trips), none of which were for fun. I haven't had an opportunity to be idle and bored, which I was really looking forward to experiencing. Writing and home improvement projects have been hard to do with so much traveling as well. I have high hopes for next year when we will no longer be traveling.

I have been extremely distracted (and not in a pleasant way) by current political events and natural disasters. I am don't know whether it is that I have more time to notice terrible things or that things are actually more terrible this year. My empathic self feels battered and bruised and I know that I  need to limit my exposure to the news for my own sanity but haven't done so. Nonetheless, knowing that I have the privilege of time that others do not, I am spending some of it writing and calling my congresspeople and helping out in other ways. Also, I'm contributing more to my Zen group. Developing a meditation habit before this year turns out to have been a good idea.

We have started exploring how we would move outside the US if we needed to and also we are thinking that it might be prudent to have a portion of emergency money in a non-US bank, bond, or financial instrument. We are very much hoping that this will not be necessary but better to have made emergency plans and back ups and never have to use them than to need them and not have them.

One of the wonderful things about walking away from my job is that I have had more time with my husband. It turns out that he's a super nice guy! We've had time to walk, game, and do other more intimate things and our relationship has improved quite a bit. He continues to work and continues to push the date of his retirement forward from three years to four years to six years if all is well or to eight years if Trump is still in office. I think he loves being a professor and will not leave his position here unless it is to take up another professorial position elsewhere. I'm ok with that since he is ok with me being home.

I am healthier but no thinner. Darn! On the other hand, after 30 years of futilely trying to get my hair to grow, it has now reached my lower back and looks healthier than at any point in my life. My husband says that I used to rip it out and chew on it when I was stressed. No work stress apparently means more hair growth. Yay!

Money has been a bit tighter than we wanted this year. A large part of that was the number of trips (four of the nine were to my home town to help out family) and money given to family to help resolve problems for them, memorial costs for my father's grave, and some household emergencies. However, we haven't had to touch our emergency fund or any of our savings and our budget is still in the black, plus we have been saving about $1800 a month in my husband's 401K. If we can stay in the black until the end of this year, we will be quite happy.

So that's my update.

I am so torn. We're more or less at bare-bones FI -- God willin' and the crick don't rise -- but I am finding it difficult to leave my job. Change is hard.

I'm still worried about soaring healthcare expenses; I've got many years before I'll be Medicare-eligible. Other than that uncertainty, though, the numbers look good.

I sort of have a plan to stick it out until the new year for a little extra financial padding. But I may not last that long. The job is fine, but I'm starting to get wandering feet.

Keep posting your post-FIRE stories, please. They're helping me solidify my plans, inch by inch.

My last day of work is today (so I'll be gone in 8 hours).  As others have mentioned, I'm also nervous.  Yesterday, I was having this nightmare that those that will take over my work won't be able to figure it out.  I definitely have issues with people pleasing and try or tend to take on things so others don't have to.  I think that's what kept me in this job for so long; not only was I afraid that others would figure out that I didn't know what I was doing, I also am afraid of putting "burdens" on others.  This of course has always been a source of internal strife for myself as I have these two almost contradicting behaviors towards the work that I do (feeling incompetent but also not wanting to "make" or even ask others to support my work).  Because of this, I feel like I can confidently say that I've learned something about myself from all of these years.  I tend to approach things with a "brute force" approach.  I struggle through it for what seems like forever to just have a small grasp of what is going on.  Due to this, I can be pretty disciplined (to a fault) and way too patient even when it probably would've saved me a lot of heartache and stress just asking someone else to help me out.  I think a lot of this methodology has been imprinted into the work that I've done.

Anyhow, back to my struggle with handing off my work.  As I was talking to my wife, I realized that there isn't anything all "that" special about me.  I'm decidedly average and none of my work is overly complex (maybe confusing at times due to the above mentioned methodology, but definitely not hard to figure out).  Also, I need to let go the notion that others can't do what I do; they most definitely can and will get there.  I got this mentality from my biological parents and have learned to hate that approach.  I'm not better than anyone (least of all those that I work with).  And, there are definitely other ways of approaching the software than the way that I did.

Now onto the people at work, there has been a lot of outpouring of support for me in this FIRE pursuit.  I didn't know so many people cared about what was going on in my life and actually noticed the work that I did or the type of person that I am.  I think quite a few people have noticed that I'm currently one of the younger employees in the division yet I'm leaving work pursuing something completely counter to the current work culture.  Just to give you an idea, most people here have been at the company for more than 20 years and are waiting to retire with a full pension in their 50's.  Many people have been telling me how "brave" I am for walking away from a job, a town, a set life.  I've even been able to share with other people MMM and other blogs that I read.

There's just so much going on and I'm still struggling to do documentation on this last day of work.  As you can probably tell from my post, I can get all over the place and appear more confusing.  I like to read and write but want to definitely improve this and better document what actually matters to me: life itself.

I'll be checking in after this is all done with and hopefully gather my thoughts into a cohesive post(s).

Only 8 more months for Mrs. SwordGuy and I!  We missed 2017 but not by all that much!

It's been so great to see all of you hitting your FIRE dates!

I put some wheels in motion for my departure, and now this storm is hitting us and we have been off of work. I hope I can stick to my date!

Update

It's been over a month now since I've left the corporate clutches. It's had its ups and downs but mostly ups and I wouldn't go back there if I had the opportunity. It's been a bit challenging to completely disconnect because DH still works there and naturally speaks of the trials and tribulations when he gets home from work. Sometimes I don't mind and even welcome the discussion. Other times I just don't want to be reminded and all the old feelings of discontent, futile efforts, and so many other things I can't name that pop up for me.

switch said it best. I used to feel all those
same feelings of inadequacy coupled with not wanting to ask others for help. I realize this now but wasn't able to resolve these issues while working. I'm not sure how much of it was just inside my own head and how much was a reality of my environment. I fear that I may carry these issues to future endeavors but I will push past that to continue to try new things.

I felt like for the past several years that the work I was doing completely took over my life and I wasn't able to do anything else except vegout on the couch watching tv and the minimal chores.

Also I felt like I kept my true self hidden away most of my waking hours. I'm a little quirky, liberal, into alternative medicine, mostly vegan...in general not like most of the people I worked with. I felt like many parts of me didn't fit in the place that I spent most of my time. I felt like those parts of me were slowly dying off and I was becoming the version of myself that assimilated to the corporate culture of my company. I did it to survive.

Since leaving I've met some more like minded people and it's so refreshing to be able to express myself. But difficult to do because I spent so long stifling it. I really hope I can bounce back and remember myself fully again.

Metta, I haven't lost weight either! But I'm also less worried about my weight than before. I worked with a lot of fit people and felt a bit on the pudgy side much of the time in comparison. Now I'm mostly focused on eating healthy, increasing activity, and meditating regularly.

Right now I'm focused on doing a deep clean and purge/organization of my house. It's very satisfying. I've been able to spend over a week slowly cleaning and organizing my kitchen and love not being held to any deadlines or having to compromise on quality because of time restrictions. When I get tired of it I stop and do something else then come back to it later.

I've also been doing a few hours a week of volunteer work. It gets me out of the house and interacting with people and doing something worthwhile for my community feel good.

I'm taking things slow and adding in new commitments with caution. I want to preserve my delicious freedom.

I'm looking forward to something similar, though my garage and office need it more than my kitchen.

Yes! I've had to minimize volunteer work for almost a year, between FT job, ANG duties, and 2 startups. I can't wait to dial it back up. I've been big into it for most of my life and doing more of it in FIRE has always been a big motivator.

I disappeared from the boards for a while. I decided to leave my job early December. Notice given! May I join you fine people in 2017?
DH will still be working and our finances are mingled (so I'm not independently FI), but we are doing well enough that I could walk away from my job, no problem. I may do a case study soon to ask about optimization of our assets. Woo!

Welcome Basenji! There is always room in the 2017 party room for another person who is ready to FIRE. Our finances are also mingled and have always been. Currently my husband is adding one more year to his job every other month. He doesn't want to leave his job but is happy I have left. Our lives are so much happier this way. We are FI together but only one of us (me) is RE.

Hey folks!

My wife and I quit our jobs on June 23rd and are officially FI. Sorry I'm late posting here, but we spent the entire summer traveling with the kids. Now that they're back in school, it finally feels "real". My wife and I are in the process of planning out projects, getting more exercise, spending time with our kids after school and generally enjoying life.

Stoked to join the 2017 cohort!

Awesome! Congratulations!

All you folks posting about the delights of FIRE are making me think seriously about leaving my job this year instead of next. I do still like the job, and it's more $$ and health insurance in an uncertain time about health-care expenses. But y'all are just having too much fun, and since spouse is already retired, I am mightily tempted to join in the party.

8 more to go!  8 for 8!

Make that 7 - I'm confirmed!  Some slight timing changes - the baby came a month early, so I took a week off, making up an extra week of handover, finishing on the 6th of October.  I'm now in the process of handing over last projects and clients, and starting to bring things home from the office.

It feels a little surreal, but that's probably because a tiny baby is keeping us from getting a full night's sleep!  Was also odd seeing the my last full pay be processed - still a couple of weeks and some un-used leave to be paid out, but in the main I've now ceased a regular paycheque.

Its pretty exciting, but I'm also feeling like I'm counting the days.  14 office days left...
