Cookie78... how is your last day going?  Plans for tomorrow?

Ready for the 18th dividendman?  Did you give notice today?

It's GREAT! I'm so excited and I can't stop grinning.

Also I signed a lease last night to rent my spare room while I'm away (and maybe after I come back), the window replacement guys came by last night last minute to do their final measurements, and I had enough time and energy last night to pack the truck and get almost everything on my list done.

So I can get the hell outta town right after work! I just have to put the canoe on the truck, watre the garden, and pick up dog food and maybe snacks on the way out. I don't have to be to the family reunion camping spot until Friday night, so I have an extra day to drive and I'm taking the slow scenic gravel road route (Hwy 40) which I've never been on before. I got some good free camping tips from a friend who used to live near Rocky Mountain House

Looking forward to it SOOOOO much!!

I used to fantasize about getting laid off.  I would have loved me some severance and unemployment benefits. But the company was doing well and I couldn't bring myself to do so poorly as to be let go.

I'm now nearing the end of my second week of freedom.  The first week was kind lethargic and also an emotional roller coaster but this week I have a bit more energy and I'm starting to get some ideas of what projects I'd like to do and what skills I'd like to learn. I'm journaling which helps a lot (I highly recommend it). I still am watching a lot of streaming entertainment and web-surfing but intersperse it with chores around the house. I love how easy it is now to keep my house clean, keep up with laundry, cook fresh healthy food everyday, and get plenty of good sleep. I like that I don't have to get all the chores done in one day.  My motivation ebbs and flows throughout the day and it is nice to be able to get stuff done when I feel like it and then when I'm out of energy just rest and watch a show or surf the internet for a while.

I still think about work every once in a while.  I'm still processing the experience.  I sometimes get angry at how I was treated by some people and wish I could go back and tell them what I really think.  Sometimes I miss people or activities I was so used to. Now that I have some mental distance from that experience I can start to get some perspective.  I think that some of the people I worked with were really negative and it wasn't good for my self-esteem. I always felt not good enough.  In some ways that was helpful because it motivated me to work harder to keep improving but bad because it made me unhappy overall.  As time passes those negative voices are starting to fade and I'm feeling a lot better about myself and I think I may be capable of a lot more than I used to think.

Well, I just found out my position has been eliminated today - kind of.  My group is being consolidated into another group so I no longer have any direct reports (I'm a manager).  I asked if that meant my position was eliminated.  My boss didn't seem to understand how to answer the question and after much prompting he said "Yes - your position has been eliminated".  Since our managers tell their group ahead of any reorganization announcement I'm told ahead of time so I can inform my direct reports they have a new boss and reporting structure.

I sure wish they would tell me that I'm also out of a job but my boss insisted that I give some thought to other roles in which I may be placed to help.   I'm hoping that is just a story he is making up in order to bridge the gap between now and the announcement.  The organizational announcement usually takes place after people have been informed of their new reporting structure and those that are being laid off are informed.

(I condensed the information above.  It's probably confusing?

So I'm hoping I'm one of the chosen ones (to be laid off).

No severance package.  Oh well.  That would have been easy money but I've never relied on easy money.

Status: Soon to be FIRE'd?!

To all our most recent retirees - congrats!!

I'm just over a week into retirement and its been going great. All my anxiety post notice disappeared almost immediately. I had a long weekend vacation with family right out of the gate and I think that helped a lot. I expected to feel strange when I came back home, but this feels so normal. I have hardly thought about work at all...maybe it will still hit me, who knows. I feel good regardless.

I had to stop by the office yesterday to sign a few lingering things and someone was giving me an update on my ex-project. I nodded and responded as politely as I could, but inside my head I was singing "I really don't care!!!"

Feeling a lot like the grounded kid, watching out my window as my friends play outside.  Oh well - I can come out and play in 2021.

Congrats 2017 group!

Confirmed here, my last day was July 28th. I'm on "vacations" since my wife took three weeks off. I'll feel retirement for real only when she'll be back to work and I'm starting my new life.

Adding myself to this list.  I'm officially at one more month; planning to put in a 3-weeks notice next week.  We've gotten rid of most of our furniture; I'm getting lots of anxiety making sure I'm not missing anything.

I have recently made a decision to shoot for September 1st! That will give me work provided health care coverage for the month of September. At this moment, I am looking at health insurance options. If it all pans out (hopefully I get word this week on that), I am going to announce either later this week or next.

I got changed to MIA, which I can hardly dispute given my lack of forum activity, but I have decided to delay from July 31st to December 1st as I've found an unexpected opportunity to refi some rental units. Paperwork is done and from next month payments will be decreased by an annualised ~$20k. I feel that it is a significant enough number to justify the delay and hope it won't lead to any further OMY type of slippage. Of course I could run for the hills today, but I'm going to put in a couple of extra months just to avoid leaving egg on the faces of those who extended the new financing to me, who never even thought to ask but probably never imagined that I would be quitting my rather lucrative job, which their bosses would probably consider a major dent on my credit profile. Feels good though now, that extra buffer has really eased a lot of "am I really there?' stress. Loving the stories of those who have already pulled the trigger!

Its real - I handed in my notice today.  I ended up putting 6 October as the final date, to capture an extra paid public holiday, and taking vacation leave for the final 4 days.  Same effect as getting my left over holidays paid out finishing on the 1st, but I get paid for an extra day this way.

I'm excited.  Will be glad to convert to actual FIRE rather than the "dead man walking" that I've been shadow acting recently.

Well my boss flew into town on Monday.  I just ran into him today in the hallway.  He wants to meet after lunch.  So here I sit waiting impatiently so that something comes to fruition.   Hopefully that is a layoff.  Somehow I fell like I'm going to be disappointed.  I really want this to be the last day of school :).

Well I spoke with my boss.  The announcement has now been delayed to the end of August.  I told him I'm going to forward my desk phone to my cell phone and to call my cell phone if he needs anything.  I'll be "working" from home.

I even asked him why it was so difficult to let me know if I'm getting RIF'd and he said he doesn't know so he can't even begin to let me know.  I do have a few things to help out with and I'll explore doing those things from home.

I'm returning to work a week from tomorrow after my 3-month leave of absence. I've put myself in the OMY camp for now, though honestly I'm not sure how long I'll last; I may still FIRE before the end of the year. I have a rough plan to try to stick it out through 2017, and then start 2018 as a newly-minted human of leisure.

I gotta say, these decisions are really hard to make. I like my job, and I appreciate that they gave me the summer off to relax and recuperate from some health issues. But freedom is a powerful lure. I'll probably know in the first couple of months whether I'll last through the rest of the year, both in terms of the aforementioned health issues and in terms of my tolerance for a 9-to-5 that I may no longer need.

Good that you are FI.

Announcement is for the third layer down in company.  The first two layers have been announced.  So there are multiple announcements at the third layer (multiple VP's).  .  I think we are in the same third layer (VP Layer) so the announcement at the end of August (the only one I know about) I'm referring should include your group too.

His lack of denial may be just that wink I'm looking for (fingers crossed - hahah).  I really do feel that my boss doesn't know at this point.  The "list" won't be finalized until end of August and he hasn't had the opportunity to be informed because they never went through with it.  Once the list is "finalized" it comes down the food chain rather rapidly (within a few hours).

Well today is my third day working at home.  My office is now devoid of any of my personal items.  I actually did some work on a spreadsheet.  I guess that makes me happier that I'm at least contributing.  The only feeling I have are as stated by SachaFiscal.  Feeling of being in limbo.  I have many projects at home that I would like to start, but I'm not motivated.  I thinking it may be due to this stuck at the train station type of feeling. (The Matrix reference)

I just put in my resignation for 9/8/2017.  My boss was really understanding and encouraging about going off on my own in the future and happily offered to give a letter of recommendation if I ever need one.

However, I do feel nervous and somewhat emotional.  I've been here almost 11 years full-time and for 4 years as an intern prior to that.  I've really been institutionalized for so long.  But, now it's coming to a close and I'm counting down the days.

It's just me, but that looks like a troll with a long blue tongue OR a Grog of Down (Niven's Known Space series).   Considering that is probably a large alchoholic drink, the results may be the same.

Edit:    Ok, I'm in, any scenario :-)

mmmm Rambutan.... Our local Asian Market had them on sale recently but they were all gone by the time I could get any.  I've had them here locally as well as in many other places in the states.

The feeling is real now.  So many people have asked me what my plans are, etc.  I still have the stresses of figuring out healthcare as well as making sure everything is in order before I leave, but the first hurdle is done.

I'm sitting here in a tropical paradise drinking a nice coffee, spending quality time with my kids and eating amazing fruit and it occurs to me that retirement is freaking awesome!

You certainly make it sound appealing. :)

A Victory Tour right after FIRE is an excellent idea. Rite of passage, crossing a threshold, marking the occasion, etc. I spent the summer in a mini-FIRE without really doing anything much, and it wasn't as great as I'd hoped. Food for thought as to how to approach it better next time.

My last day is on Friday, and I'm doing a "Victory Tour" as well! Never thought of it like that, but that's what it is.

It's kind of a 4 month victory tour with multiple trips every month starting with the day after I FIRE!

I am planning a 3 week trip in Canada around Camp Mustache Canada (CMC) in October, and I don't have enough PTO days left to take that, so I do have to quit before then. A forced FIRE motivator I guess...

I am still waiting to see if I am approved for health sharing. If I don't get word on that this week, I may move my last day from September  1 to October 2. That would allow me to cash in on our latest ESPP shares we get at the end of September, so it is tempting. October 2 is my worst case scenario for sure.

This sh*t is getting real. I am just dying to blurt out I am quitting so that I can get out of some of the more mundane things at work these weeks, but I am keeping my mouth shut until I get word on the health sharing. It's torture I tell you to have this secret!

I am trying to enjoy these last days though. Every time I run into someone I like in the hallways, I add them to my goodbye draft email that I am composing for my last week.

Yup, before I told my boss I resigned and even after I told him but it wasn't public, it was torture. Now that everyone knows it's not so bad. I guess I like working if I can do whatever I want whenever I want, which is my last couple of days, ha!

Still at work... probably last post from a work computer :)

It feels the best ever! I'm going to go around the office and say bye and probably leave a few hours early.

Surreal is definitely the way it feels here too!!!  Last day was today....  so exciting but so sad too.  It was hard saying goodbye to some great coworkers.  Onward to the next chapter - Moving day is tomorrow... no rest for the weary ;).

Update:

My boss set up a meeting with me tomorrow in my office.  If he is going to be in my office, then he is flying into town.  His schedule didn't show him being in town this week.  Therefore.....(drumroll)......I might get laid off tomorrow and Thursday may be my first day of FIRE!

Ta Dah.

Fingers crossed.

Normally I don't root for a colleague to get laid off, but I'll make an exception in this case :-)

It's great being able to root for someone to get laid off. So much nicer than dread. Good luck, WIGLO!

Well, it's a done deal.  Everything went smoothly.  I let them know that it would be the easiest layoff they have ever been involved in and that I wanted to give them (boss and HR) a hug and kiss.

Made a bunch of phone calls.  Working on decompression.  I have the feeling, like others have noted, it may take awhile.  Hopefully it will be less than a month. DW cried (even though she knew it was coming).  I think she is scared of the unknown as it has been 22 years since I haven't been free of the bondage of servitude.  Additionally, she isn't interested in learning anything about our finances.

My letter states my freedom begins today!  Would someone please update my status to

FIRE'd
