We have flipped three houses, two since I retired in january.  Currently looking for rental property but this is my new hobby.  Just trying to learn real estate investing to teach my sons.  My father-in-law is my mentor.  He has flipped 40 houses and has rental property.  I do the demolition and my wife is the designer.  The rest is performed by the professionals.
We have taken multiple vacations, we take care of our parents and are living off our investments.

Are your retirement and post - FIRE plans going well? I'm so glad I took the plunge.  I often felt I was taking a huge risk, that I'd miss work and my profession, that I'd be bored and lonely but at this stage, still loving every day I don't have to go to work. So far, no boredom or loneliness. Some weird feelings, I think relating to de-stressing after working in a high stress job, including unusual dreams. I'm taking the first six months (at least) as a transition phase to de-stress and get healthy, so far, so good.

My partner, retiring next month at 54, is getting a lot of questions from his colleagues who didn't think it possible to retire before superannuation preservation age (in Australia the age that you can access your superannuation, 58 for my partner, I'm younger so 60 for me).  There are almost daily stories of conversations about mortgages, spending patterns, and "what will you do all day" questions.  I'm very pleased as his workplace is not pleasant so many people are only staying because they think they can't afford to leave. He's referring people to the MMM site, of coarse!

i'm giving 4 weeks notice.

on wednesday!!!!

only need 2 but there are some things that need transitioning and i'll do that because of the people i work with. if it was just about the company then it'd be 2 weeks...

Sweet! Wednesday is my plan too.

Did either of you give notice today?? I really wish I could do it today and have it over with...just one more week (and then two more weeks).

We're starting to get more questions from friends and family whom we've told about "taking a break from work to take care of the baby" and "living off our savings." Now that the baby is almost a year old, they're beginning to question exactly *how much savings* we have to still not be working.

We've absolutely loved being able to spend every day with our little baboo, seeing all the milestones and spending lots of family time together doing picnics and playing. This week is a sad week because a family member is in the hospital close to the end. The good side is that since neither one of us has a job, we can drive the 8 hours to go see them before they pass and spend time supporting the rest of the family.

I did it! My supervisor seemed genuinely happy for me. And they were okay with two weeks. I told a few other people. I was expecting people to be coming into my office but I guess either they don't know yet or maybe don't care. Anyway I'm done in a couple of weeks! It helps to have a transition plan ready to discuss.

Thanks Freedom17!  I'm so so so happy!!! My husband noticed a distinct change in my demeanor today. I feel like a great weight has been lifted off my chest. I got the feeling that my manager wants to quit too. And it sounds like she might be able to, maybe I will inspire her. Over the past week I've been running through all sorts of scenarios in my head about what I would say of they said _____. I would wake up at 2 in the morning and not be able to get back to sleep until 4. I'd spend the time reading articles on the internet about how to resign and reading this forum. My hair has been falling out a rapid rate because of the stress. I feel so relieved now from having just ripped off the bandaid and gone through with it. I think I'm gonna sleep good tonight.

mandyM and unleashhell, I'd love to hear your stories if you've taken the plunge!! If not, don't be afraid, just do it! And be free.

Thanks Freedom17!  I'm so so so happy!!! My husband noticed a distinct change in my demeanor today. I feel like a great weight has been lifted off my chest. I got the feeling that my manager wants to quit too. And it sounds like she might be able to, maybe I will inspire her. Congrats!!! I was planning to talk to my boss next Thurs (the 13th), but I saw on his calendar that he goes on vacation the next day. Made me realize that there is no good time to do this, so I may as well bump it up. He's out of the office most of today, I'm hoping he will be back tomorrow and I will do it then. !!!

i'm giving 4 weeks notice.

on wednesday!!!!

only need 2 but there are some things that need transitioning and i'll do that because of the people i work with. if it was just about the company then it'd be 2 weeks...

Sweet! Wednesday is my plan too.

Did either of you give notice today?? I really wish I could do it today and have it over with...just one more week (and then two more weeks).

nope. i only need to give 2 weeks so i can wait. Changed my mind to leave it until Monday - i'm fully vested in the pension plan then.

after i made that decision my boss announced he's off to visit a sick family member on another continent - starting monday!!

so i may have to do it today - or wait until he gets back on the exact day i have 2 weeks left..
sigh.

Congratulations, Sacha!  I'm happy for you!  I tried to inspire my 63-year old manager to retire too, but he says he's going to work five more years.  I don't get it, but I hope he's happy with his decision.

I'm still loving retirement, 6.5 weeks in.  No regrets at all, and vast amounts of relief.  I'm getting more exercise and more sleep, and those two things alone make a world of difference in my mental state.

Thank you!

We didn't set a date yet. Between a conference next week and my boss on vacation the following week, it will just depend on when I can transition everything. I would like to be done on the 21st, but I foresee working at least a few hours the following week when my boss is back.

Almost six weeks in, and I've been busy!  We moved to Orlando on 6/15, our Richmond condo went on the market 6/22 and went under contract three days later, closing in August and adding to the stash!  Mr. Mandalay has a couple of job interviews lined up and I've been doing a little freelance writing.  We walk for three-plus miles every day and we've been eating very healthy--I've lost ten pounds so far.  Right now I'm surfing the net, enjoying my tea, listening to The Lord of the Rings soundtrack and watching the cat play on the lanai.  FIRE life is pretty damn good!

Hat is over the fence - I haven't set my date officially, but I'm leaving the country with DW and five family members on 12/18, and I will not be back for almost a month. I can't take enough leave to cover it, so I'm committed. I have, as they say, burned my ships. I came pretty close to OMY, but knowing I'd have to tell this group helped keep me from doing it.

So, I'm gonna make the next five months count - I do love my team and I want to be proud of the work I've done - and it will be easier with a firm endpoint.

Haha. I did a similar thing. First I did OLY because I could financially. Then I booked a bunch of trips (all on points that were virtually free of course) for right after my planned date of Aug. 18th. I have two cruises right after that back to back, then several other trips this year.

So... even if I wanted to chicken out at the last minute it would be tough. Hat is over the wall!

These last two weeks are going extremely slow.  I wish I was done already.  Upper managmeet is trying to negotiate with me to stay but I'm sick at the thought of it. Some co workers are more than pissed off. I will probably spend the last two weeks locked in my office hiding.  Some people are really nice and supportive though. I try to think about those folks and forget about the haters. I'm just counting down the days hours minutes seconds until my exit interview....

It's nice reading about folks who are enjoying FIRE already. It helps me chill and not be so stressed out.

Why are they pissed? Jealousy? They feel betrayed? Too much work? I'm always amazed by people who focus so much on other people's lives and not their own.

Some of my peers are upset because they will have more work now. Some in management are upset because schedules will slip. I think some people are jealous too. They don't want to be stuck there but they are.  I've been in their position before. People have left and I've had to step up and take over responsibilities  that I really didn't want to do. But I did them and just saved more, waiting until the day I can be free.  Now I'm free and I'm not going to let them convince me to stay in captivity.

I bet in a few months they'll forget all about me and move on with their lives.

Last day is likely July 25, still two weeks away, although I'm already down to 3-4 days per week so it should go quickly. I just got done with a four day conference and we were only telling select people prior to that. My coworkers and clients all know now, thank goodness. It should be fairly smooth sailing from here out.

Coworker asked me, "Did you win the lottery?" I replied, "I won the lottery a long time ago; I only recently realized it."
By being born in a place and time where it's possible to do this? Yeah...

You sure your boss won't offer you a leave of absence so you can take your vacation without pay? It's surprising how flexible everyone suddenly gets when you tell them you're leaving.

I'm sorry cookie78; it looks like I have to abandon the August 3 date and push it a few weeks out.... but it's for a good reason.  Hubby and I are buying a house near my hometown to be closer to my parents and family in general.  As of this week, we have our current house under contract and the conditional approval for our new mortgage all signed and sent.  Everything is now on track for a late August, early September separation from the daily grind.  DH has an end date of Aug 18th and has already let his employer know that he'll be moving.  I'll wait until mortgage closes to announce separation.  Once we move, DH will probably look to find a job so that we have insurance coverage.  Aside from that, it's "fun" jobs for us from then on if and when we feel like we want (or need) them.... :-)

Can't wait to read how everything continues to go for everyone!

Congratulations to all!

Hello Freedom17. Excited? No, rather more confused and in a holding pattern.

If you read my updates above, I took a stand at work. As of now, the management team hasn't even brought up that I went to HR, but I have noticed my direct manager's change of tone, and her manager's scared litte silly look of a bully brought to his knees when he greets me in the hallway.

Last I left it with HR, they suggested a one level demotion at the same pay. At first glance, it sounds like a great deal. Less work and same pay. But I am not the normal employee at this point and am trying to chart a path to FIRE, with a nice severence package. I told HR I would wait to hear back from my doctor on his advice. My doctor has not gotten back with me yet.

I am thinking at my next meeting with my direct manager, she may ask how I feel about the demotion. If I was planning on staying long term, I might accept. But I think my new angle is to say that it would be humiliating to accept a demotion and see her reaction. You know, some of this is kind of fun...having FU money and them not knowing about it.

I was also thinking of going to HR and telling them I have decided I don't want the demotion and see what they say. If they push it, I can say it is humiliating after 20+ years of service. I have had good reviews my whole career until I went on sick leave, and that I won't be bullied into accepting it. I may suggest "I'd rather take a voluntary severance package than accept a humiliating offer" and see what happens.

Otherwise, I am happily chugging along, doing my work at my best effort. I am actually meeting a lot of their arbitrary goals anyways, so there really is no need for a demotion talk. But I do hope they bring it up. Hee hee...

The thing is my department is undergoing a lot of attrition (surprise surprise with bully management), and there are currently 8 openings in my department which they are having trouble gathering interest on from people looking for work. This, while the rest of the company is downsizing. So I am not sure there is fertile ground for a severance package, but that is what I am working on now.

I really hope I can wrap this up by CMC 2017!

"Last I left it with HR, they suggested a one level demotion at the same pay."

Wait, they're suggesting you be demoted because of a disability? I think you should get that in writing, let them demote you, and then call up a lawyer and get a nice settlement!

By the way what is CMC?

Well I think it was HR's attempt at compromise after I told her my management suggested a 2 level demotion, which I labelled as "putting a knife in the wound", amid my tears at the HR office. I suppose after the poor review and my manager's bullying attitude, I almost suggested that due to my slower (but not really that bad, to be honest) thinking, maybe I can't perform at the same lead level as before. But they didn't put me in a lead role when I returned to work, they put me back on writing code which I haven't done in 10 years so it's like a new re-learning curve.

Regardless, I think this demotion talk is the kindle to my severance filled FIRE, so I am not going to discourage them bringing it up. I will just be humiliated when they do bring it up. :-)

I almost feel I'm in the opposite situation. My tolerance for BS at work has dropped a lot and, for better or worse, I've become more loose and started calling BS out when I see it and challenging all the terrible ideas and initiatives that are rife in our organization.

I'm not sure if I'll make the last two weeks or not. We have a cultural training course next week for 4 hours where we will define our organizations culture. This is their great new initiative after cutting 90% of the workforce. Anyway this may very well push me over the edge. Let's see how it goes :)

Oh my BS bucket is overflowing and I am stepping on the spillovers.

I do bring out the comments on the BS stuff, but try to be constructive and somewhat nice about it. I don't think I was born with the mean gene. I hope this doesn't get me out of a severance package.

Once I fight back on the humiliating demotion, I worry they will just scurry back into their little holes and pretend the whole thing never happened. There is huge attrition and I don't think they want me to go. Oh the despair I face...I hope they make this easy.

I have an odd question for you, Class of 2017. Is it normal to feel sad just before FIRE? The last week or so I've felt this incredible incapacitating sadness that I can't shake, and for the life of me I can't figure out any reason for it. A little recent stress over house repairs, but nothing major; a little stress over the fact that I can't sell my houses for another year after FIRE; a little loneliness possibly, but that's probably a symptom not a cause, and a lot of impatience to be done with working.

If it was just a little sadness I could ignore it, but this is getting obnoxious and frustrating. The only thing I can think of is that life is about to change in 19 more days and maybe there's some stress there that I haven't noticed yet. Has anyone else had this experience?

*I CAN sell them, but due to both market conditions and mortgage requirements it's (probably) way better to wait another year

I'm one week into my two week notice (one week left to go).  Cookie, I do feel sad at times.  I broke down crying in my office the other day.  It's like I'm saying goodbye to a part of my life that I just can't continue anymore.  There are people who I'm upsetting by leaving and I'm afraid I'll leave without resolving the issues or getting closure. I've spent so many years of my life at this company. I'm definitely emotional about leaving but at the same time looking forward to starting my new life. The thought of continuing there makes me sick to my stomach but at the same time I walk the campus these days with a feeling of nostalgia. I'm so stressed out that I've been losing my hair more than normal. It's definitely a huge life change and the stress of it is showing. As much as those people drove me crazy, I also care about many of them.  You can't help but care when working with people for so many hours of your life.  I also feel a bit guilty for leaving since many people will have to work a bit harder to take over some of the responsibilities that I normally would.

At the same time, I'm counting down the hours and can't wait until next Friday when I'll sail out of there.  My husband has made me a quitting playlist that I'll be listening to which includes classics like the theme to 9 to 5 and "take this job and shove it".  I'm so looking forward to the possibilities of my future.  I feel like my future is undetermined again and I love it.  I love the fact that every day might be different than the previous day.  I feel like I'm about to embark on a great adventure.

I definitely feel a sadness about leaving. Even though I've planned to quit for so long, I really wish I could like my job enough to stay awhile. The word I've been using is defeated. This is the best job I've ever had and try as I might, I just don't want to do it. I think (hope) that once I get past my last day, I will feel better - this purgatory that I'm in between resigning and leaving is weird.
