Thank you both for the responses.  I'll look up some examples of how to word the letter and speak to my supervisor in the coming weeks.

I was thinking about mentioning it to some colleagues that I care a little more about as well.

Two weeks' notice is business standard. Typically, there's no requirement for even one day, though you might want to review your employment contract to make sure.

I'm not sure how much notice I'll give. As soon as I am positive of my end date, I'll probably tell my manager, because I like and trust him, and I'll give at least two weeks notice. I may even be willing to extend that a bit to be helpful to him. But I have a feeling that once I've really made up my mind about going, I'll be itching to ride off into my own personal sunset as soon as possible.

About how to word the letter and what to say, I'd recommend being clear and focusing on positives: that X is your end date (and whether that's a bit negotiable for their convenience), that you're grateful for the opportunity they gave you to work there, that you've enjoyed your work and the people, that you're sad about leaving but can't resist the new opportunity you're leaving for (even if that "opportunity" is retirement), that you wish them all the best in the future.

Good luck.

@myhotrs: I find myself in a situation that I feel is similar to yours. High pay, low expectations, lots of freedom (within the matrix). What made you pull the trigger? The numbers say I could FIRE in 2017, but I have not set a date yet.

Are there any others that had to get over this "too good to leave" hump in order to actually set a date and see it through? Thanks!

I'm in the same boat. I'm actually in the 2018 cohort but could easily be in this one. I have put march of next year as an arbitrary date, but really I feel like I'm just losing out on life and might pull the trigger in August per my original 10 plan...

but yes, my job is very high paying, and has quite a lot of BS but none of it is crazy where I'm stressed or anything... it just feels blah. I'm definitely postponing living life every month I stay here.

That's exactly how I feel for the past few months, if not years. I was planning on FIRE'ing in 2018 'cause of RSU vesting schedule but just can't hang in any longer. @Freedom17's motivation is much more positive than mine, but I'll give you my pessimist's view on why I'm pulling my trigger sooner. ;)
  • Corprate politics
  • The worsen commute
  • Summer stress cycle at work (which started in spring this year, but I'm already checked out so not freaked out)
  • Annual performance review
  • Tons of interests I'd like to persue
  • A young kid (who has trouble adjusting to... preschool)
  • A 15-year-old sick cat
and here's the biggy -
  • Work-triggered anxiety
I know it's all in my head and I can change my though patterns, yadi yadi yada, but apparently I'm officially burnt out. If I've left in 2016, which was the earliest that I could have, knowing that I can always pick up (contracting) work here and there if there's any financial concern, maybe I could've avoided this? Someone also mentioned if your FI status depends on having that one extra month's (year?) of income, then you're not truly FI. We're in the opposite situation now where a year's income doesn't really affect our net worth much (or maybe I'm not making that much? 😜)

So what I'd suggest is, hang in only if the extra cushion truly makes you feel better, not because of fear; be aware of burnt out, and get out before that happens. At some point, having more freedom will outweigh having more cushion. You'll know when that point is when it comes!

I don't have pretty villa pictures but here's my geriatric kitty. =^.^=

I know what you mean, freedom17. I'm not passionate about this job but I still stress over many aspects of it. It's dumb.

Other stuff I'd add:

  • Parents get older not younger
  • Kids get older not younger
  • You get older not younger

For work anxiety the best cure is to stop caring. I can't help but feel that most of us here are too responsible for our own good which is why we are in a position to FIRE and also why we want to FIRE.

I've started working 2 hours a day. My boss gave me a bonus last week for high velocity and mentioned today what a fast worker I am. Needless to say I jumped on my bike and rode home at 2:30 instead of the usual 3:30.

It's so effing hard for me to stop caring! My therapist was totally puzzled why I care so much, but maybe that's why I'm going to stop working soon and she's not in her 60s...

Curious to know why you're giving no notice?

If I give notice and leave with vacation they pay me out but only salary not stock. If I take the vacation I get salary and my stock vests as well. The problem is that I'm leaving the US so I'm not going to fly back after vacation and stay in a hotel for 2 weeks just to be a nice guy.

Their selfish policy has bitten them in the ass.

So it's like throwing the golden handcuff into the Pacific/Indian Ocean. :)

This community is so awesome! Thanks all for the personal inspiration toward pulling the trigger and also the sharing of the personal doubts and hurdles so many of us seem to have in common. I find it so helpful to communicate with people who either have only recently overcome them or are somewhere on the path of overcoming them. I find myself fearing that I am making a huge mistake by letting go of such a high paying, relatively stress free job. I have worked very hard to get to where I am in a position where so much is on autopilot and quite carefree. I grew up as a poor farm kid, so I am constantly challenged to view the world with an abundance mindset instead of a scarcity mindset. It's why my financial numbers indicate I can already RE; yet, I still carry on.

Change is scary. So, I end up procrastinating on the necessary next steps of setting a FIRE date and selling my house to reduce my expenses and expand my post-FIRE options. I try to get myself on track by repeating the mantra: sacrifice the good for the sake of the great. It has helped; however, I feel that finally reaching out to these forums by posting in a few threads and starting a journal are helping so much more. I think the pieces are finally lining up to execute this plan of FIRE, and quite frankly, I'm starting to feel a bit excited and impatient. I think it's a good sign. Spring is a hopeful time in the midwest!

I think that the key to not having any regrets leaving what seems like it would be a dream job for many is to be very explicit regarding what you are getting from it.  Are you learning skills that will make you a better person?  Perfect!  Just write down what skills you want to gain and get out as soon as you stop learning.  Are you adding a bit of margin of safety to your stache?  Perfect!  Just write down what your target withdrawal rate should be and get out as soon as you can accommodate it.  Are you funding a new project that you previously thought was unachievable?  Perfect!  Just write down how much it would cost to get bring the project to 75% chance of success and get out of your day job as soon as you can.  This is the only way you can truly dedicate yourself to the things in life that are the most important to you.

Good thoughts. I'm evaluating my job in a similar way right now. There are still some specific things I'd like to get out of it, but then, yeah. Time to go. Or at least take a leave of absence.

What Dividendman said. My attitude is that no matter how chill a job is, its still an anchor on life and as soon as its not needed get rid of it! The decision was made easier for me as my job has become really unpleasant this year (I've also noticed the closer to FI I get the less tolerance I have for BS.)

Also, while saving more $ is great, once the snowball is rolling each month/year worked matters less and less.

Hi all,

I spent two hours prepping and about nine hours running a promotional event for my startup (#2) on Sat... no pay, in fact I spent money to be there, and yet it was an amazing day. It went a long way toward reminding me what it's like to be passionate about the things you do.

I am still dialed in on 9/30/17 (+/- 4wks) for leaving civil service and PT self-employment thereafter. If it snowballs into a FT job, I'm OK with it for a while... my goal has never been to quit work, just to be able to focus as much time and energy as I want on things I care about. But I'll be honest... it's not very real yet, and I can foresee myself developing a real case of OMY syndrome, or at least dragging my feet into early 2018 for various reasons. Wish me luck!

I've enjoyed lurking and reading what everyone has to say as they approach and reach their fire date. My last day at work will be now be April 24th instead of June 1st.

That's next Monday! Exciting! Please let us know how it goes.

As for me, my boss and I both have been wishy washy about setting my last day. I finally got my act together earlier this week and put down 6/16 as my last day. I'm trying to use up my vacation and sick days so won't have to work much until then, probably 2 or 3 days a week in addition to a 2-week vacation. It's strange that I feel even more anxious once I have a last day, like I just want to get out of the door immediately even though there's not that many workdays left. Maybe I'm more burnt out than I think. Surely I can last another 12 to 18 workdays!

Congratulations!!

I may actually be on track for the end of May, or possibly June 2, the Friday of the week in which May ends. I might delay a week or two to help out my manager, who does not yet know of my plans, because a) he's awesome, and b) he is traveling most of next month. Haven't decided yet. I'm still aiming for end of May-ish.

Today is the day!

This is my last day of full-time employment.  I am very excited to be joining the retirement ranks. :)
NICE!  Last day feels weird, but the next week makes up for it.

I'm slightly behind schedule, but I will officially start my PT schedule on May 15. I will probably start by cutting to 4 days/week, then 3 days soon after. I would REALLY like to quit outright, but I'm not ready for that. The original plan was to stay on at PT for a year, but I don't know if I'll make it that long. I am pushing to have my pre-FIRE ducks in a row by Sept when my 401k employer contribution hits my account. I'll re-examine my schedule then.

Well, I did it. Sort of. I started conversations with my manager, who's being very supportive, as I expected. We're now talking about the finer details.

I hate those kinds of stressful conversations, but I'm very glad that it's out in the open now, at least with my immediate boss. Pulling the trigger is such a relief.

My notice has been given, everything on track for June 1st.

For the curious, the conversation went really well and my boss conceded that I had a valid case for moving one.  We didn't spent any time arguing and immediately started working on prioritizing the activities to be done during my transition.  I was prepared for some drama and the whole things felt a little anti-climactic, but I am super excited nonetheless.  I feel great!

Thanks MarciaB!

I completely agree with your work-optional viewpoint.

I've worked remotely in a camp setting since I was 18 with a week in, week out schedule. Through a bit of hard work, sacrifice, and luck I was able to work my way into a high paying position and save money quite quickly. Helped a great deal the fiance was also on board with the plan.

The fiance has went part time and I'm going to help my Grandpa (late 70's) on the farm. Whether the farm work will be paid or not hasn't been discussed. Work has now shifted to being on our terms and what we find appealing.

On April 24th, 2017:

- House mortgage: $0
- Investments: $753, 305 ($2,500/month cashflow)
- One Rental Property: Once finished renovations estimated $500/month cashflow.
- Couple niche websites: Generating $1,000 month cashflow (Combined).
- Fiance part time work: $2,000-$3,000/month cashflow

Our expenses average between $2,500 to $3,000 a month.

I'll keep you everyone posted how it turns out. All the best to those who've achieved FIRE and those working towards it.

Cheers!

I did it! Sort of. I'm taking a leave of absence starting next week for a few months, which lets me take the summer off to relax and go back to work in the fall. This works out better for me because a) I like my job, b) I need a break, and c) with all the political & health-cost upheaval, we may be a wee bit further from FIRE than we thought.

A week and two days to go. :)

Adding myself as confirmed - official final day was yesterday, but haven't had to be in the office for two weeks.

The process of leaving the corporation was awkward; the people there are very much wired into the "Matrix" and found it hard to understand that I was leaving but not going straight into another job (telling them the full/true story would probably have resulted in even more confusion and disbelief).

That, along with the corporation's tendancy for a myopic focus on (it's own) processes at a departmental level resulted in a drawn out, confusing, slightly broken process, with the highlight being them shutting down my work email account before my official end of employment, and so preventing me from sending the farewell email message that I had intended to send to colleagues (and that the corporation had reviewed and agreed to).

The annoying admin and hassle are almost over, with just the final paycheck to come.

I feel lighter, liberated, and just generally awesome!

Remote landlord -- good for you.  Nearly there!

After being off work since March 10th, one bit of advice -- keep connected (outside of work) with one person from your work, and make a point to go and have coffee with them in person, just because.  I finally did that and it was super awesome to realize that ending work is not like stepping into another dimension and you are barred from contact with your previous life.

I did it! Sort of. I'm taking a leave of absence starting next week for a few months, which lets me take the summer off to relax and go back to work in the fall. This works out better for me because a) I like my job, b) I need a break, and c) with all the political & health-cost upheaval, we may be a wee bit further from FIRE than we thought.

You seemed on track to FIRE until you talked to your boss. Are you sure they didn't get in your head? Put another way, if you like your job why did you put down a FIRE date in the first place?

Thanks for checking, but I'm sure. I got in my own head about health-care expenses long before I talked to him.

Part of why I put down a FIRE date is to spend time with newly retired spouse, and because I needed a break from work. Now I get to have both of those, enjoy the summer, and have a place to go back to and earn some $$ when it starts getting cold again. With all the recent political upheaval, I'd just be more comfortable with a bigger stache, and this way, we get uninterrupted health-insurance benefits for the rest of the year.

So it's sort of a modified OMY. The reason I'm not removing myself from the list is that HR made it clear that there is no guarantee that the job will still be there in September; things change. So it is possible that I won't end up back at this job, and it's possible that I will end up FIREd this year. We'll see. I figure I've bought myself a few months to figure things out.

Last day/first day today and its sort of hitting me. I have this amazing free-fall/giddy feeling all day. Had drinks yesterday with the office and today is my first day of freedom. Morning was normal until I realized I didn't need to check my email, at... all... No more voice mails, corporate announcements (Who left their IPhone in the NY office kitchen?), no more planning meetings...

Anyways, if this is post-fire, this is fucking amazing!

I takes some time to decompress.  For a long time it just felt wrong not checking my work email or doing my old recurring projects.  I didn't want to do them but not doing them just felt wrong somehow.

I call it mental muscle memory.  It was pretty intense for a while.  I was even temped to call/email my old coworkers to discuss work.  I didn't but I could easily see it happening.

DAY 1 of retirement is today.  The weather is foul but I don't care. Feeling restless but I'll get over that. Thanks again MMM and community, without you I never would have done it. Stand by for irregular updates about me enjoying myself.

I did it!

Super smart of you!

Yeah, I'm pretty pleased to have this option. :) My manager & company get a chunk of the credit for offering it. Just three more days....

In the time since I turned in my retirement notice, another person at my work has given notice that they are going to quit.

My boss talked me into going part-time instead of retiring.  No additional money, just slightly better assignments (hopefully).

Someone please update the list showing me as "part time".  Thanks.

Unfortunately I'll be postponing to 2018.  Employer offered another 3 months before I am laid off including an additional financial incentive.  This will give me some 401k match in 2018 and keep health care costs lower for 3 months.  It will help provide additional buffer before I go part-time.  I did not want to do OMY, but here I go.  It helps that 9 months ago my target date was 2022, so I'll still be ahead of schedule.

Congrats to all who are making it happen this year.

Gave my boss my notice today.  He was happy for me and a little envious - he's in his mid 60's.  I tried to convince him that he could go too, but he's too worried about his medical expenses and mortgage.

I'm still on track for June 30th.  :-)

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
