The percentage goal for me to be on track for August is 66.67%.

Bucket              Goal                 Current
401K$19,500$12,616.80
Match$3,500$3,242.40
Roth 1$6,000$4,000.00
Roth 2$6,000$4,000.00
Brokerage$12,000$14,049.91
Dividends$200$187.77
Mortgage$18,500$12,508.21
Savings$6,000$7,171.12(Done!)
Goal$71,700$57,776.2180.58%(+13.91% to goal)
Stretch$100,000$57,776.2152.66%(-8.89% to goal)

Update:
Seeing the progress everyone is making month-over-month is so encouraging! We're all walking a different road while still stretching ourselves to meet these goals. It keeps me going!

I'm still on track for my original goal, but I'm almost 10% behind on my stretch goal! I don't think September is going to be much better than August, so Oct/Nov/Dec need to step it up a notch. I expected Q2 to be bad - but not nearly this bad.

I say that as someone who saved over $58k in six months. What do I really have to complain about?

Lean August update! Little progress this month, and Sept/Oct are also likely to be "lean", but I'm still on track to surpass my goal, due to some fat savings from earlier in the year.

Goal: $30,000      [STRETCH goal: $40k]

Month  Savings            Goal         Progress
Jan       $3041           $2500/mo     10.1%

July's contributions are in. I maxed out my Mega Backdoor Roth IRA, replenished my EF of the $550 I spent in June, and started saving in brokerage. My quarterly bonus was a little bigger than budgeted, and got paid out early (normally in August). We also got a small additional bonus because my employer is awesome, and it was a (small-ish) RSU month. So yeah, very good month on the savings front!

Bucket            Goal         Current
--------------------------------------
401k        $19,500.00      $19,500.00
Roth 1      $28,750.00      $28,750.00
Brokerage   $45,000.00      $12,588.58
401k Match   $9,750.00       $9,750.00
Roth 2       $6,000.00       $6,000.00
HSA          $4,000.00       $2,516.62
Savings          $0.00           $0.00
--------------------------------------
Total      $113,000.00      $80,588.58

Progress                        71.32%

August is in! (Well, almost, I do have a few RSU shares vesting today but they won't show up until tomorrow so I'll count them next month). Fairly uneventful month, but September will see my biggest contribution of the year. I'm now hoping to exceed my stretch goal by $10 to $13k.

Bucket            Goal         Current
--------------------------------------
401k        $19,500.00      $19,500.00
Roth 1      $28,750.00      $28,750.00
Brokerage   $45,000.00      $15,570.26

HSA          $4,000.00       $2,624.95
Savings          $0.00           $0.00

August Update

401k 1: $9,326 / $19,500
Match: $2,044/ $4,160
401k 2: $13,564 / $19,500

2020 Roths: $0 / $12,000 Not gonna happen
2021 Roths: $0 / $12,000
Cash (Efund/House DP): $27,980 / $25,000 DONE
Brokerage: $0 / $25,000 Not gonna happen
HELOC Principal: $39,850 / $50,000
============================
Total: $98,488 / $125,260 (79.0%)

We've made some significant changes to our goals this year. Since the last update, we've settled into the new house and got a new job with potential for a second new job later this year. We are prioritizing putting all extra cash to debt. We're also trying to play catch up with maxing out one of the 401ks since it wasn't an option for 3 months. Painful to see so much cash going out the door but less painful than letting that HELOC hang around.

The percentage goal for me to be on track for September is 75.00%.

Bucket              Goal                 Current
401K$19,500$15,070.75
Match$3,500$3,895.89.40
Roth 1$6,000$4,500.00
Roth 2$6,000$4,500.00
Brokerage$12,000$15,028.52
Dividends$200$246.30
Mortgage$18,500$12,508.21
Savings$6,000$7,171.12
Goal$71,700$64,503.7989.96%(+14.96% to goal)
Stretch$100,000$64,503.7964.50%(-10.50% to goal)

Update:
Well, I hit my goals for Savings, Brokerage, and Dividends and I am all but guaranteed to hit my normal goal - which is very cool!

My stretch goal on the other hand...that's at risk. I'm $10k down from where I need to be. While the investing I'll be doing next month will help catch me up a little, I'm going to need November and December to do some serious work if I'm going to hit my goal. The real risk is a few big home repairs that popped up. It won't impact my normal contributing, but I expected to have a larger cash position at this point and what "extra" cash I had to help me fill the gaps is about to be poured in to the house. I'll need to do some work over the next few months and it's very, very up in the air whether or not I'll be able to do what I set out to do.

Overall though, a solid month for this race. I'm really happy to see myself a mere $7k away from my goal! I should be able to save that, easily, in October.

August is in! (Well, almost, I do have a few RSU shares vesting today but they won't show up until tomorrow so I'll count them next month). Fairly uneventful month, but September will see my biggest contribution of the year. I'm now hoping to exceed my stretch goal by $10 to $13k.

Bucket            Goal         Current
--------------------------------------
401k        $19,500.00      $19,500.00

Another lean month, as predicted! I've had (predictably) larger expenses and less income, but I expect to have a couple of fat months later to make up for it. I'm pretty sure I will be able to surpass my main goal.

Goal: $30,000      [STRETCH goal: $40k]

Month  Savings            Goal         Progress
Jan       $3041           $2500/mo     10.1%
Feb       $2700           $2500            9.0%
Mar       $4200           $2500          14.0%
Apr       $700             $2500            2.3%
May      $1200           $2500            4.0%
June     $9874            $2500          32.9%
July      $2961            $2500            9.9%
Aug       $700            $2500           2.3%
Sep       $700            $2500           2.3%

Totals   $26,076        $22,500         86.9%

Don’t have the gumption at the moment to post a screenshot, but as of today I’ve saved $33,009.01 (73% of the 45k goal). We’re 77% through the year so I’m a bit behind.

Just noticed that I hadn't updated since July, so here's the situation after two spendy months (blame some winter preps):

                       Planned       Actuals      % to date
Total              67,237         61,174               91.0%

Tax exempt     5,237          4,826                92.1%
EF/Accruals  19,200        18,550                96.1%
Brokerage     42,800        37,800                88.3%

Now, this looks I reach my savings target if nothing unexpected comes up.

I don't generally prefer mid-month updates, but I wanted to say I HIT MY MAIN GOAL!!!

I've still got a few months left to try and hit my stretch goal of 100k, but it was so exciting to update my spreadsheet after my last 401k contribution and see it peak over my original, $71.7k goal! It's truly insane to have saved so much in 10 months.

The percentage goal for me to be on track for October is 83.33%.

401K$19,500$16,589.51

Brokerage$12,000$19,964.46
Dividends$200$277.52
Mortgage$18,500$15,678.21
Savings$6,000$7,171.12
Goal$71,700$73,956.40103.15%(+19.82% to goal)
Stretch$100,000$73,956.4073.96%(-9.37% to goal)

Update:
I officially hit my goal for 2021! Feels good!!!!

And yet...

I am a long way from hitting my stretch goal. I had a bit of savings I was planning on throwing at it in Nov/Dec and then the house turned out to need lots and lots and lots and lots of repairs. Additionally, my company didn't do nearly as well in Q3 as I hoped. There's still a chance (the quarter ends Friday), but even if we close everything we're hopping to, I probably won't see that money until January. So, I'll likely fall short of $100k.

Still, this has been the best year of my life financially. My income has grown significantly, my savings rate is huge, and my investments have all grown a lot. And even though I'm spending a lot of money now, I have the cash for it and my original savings goals are unimpacted - which is pretty dang cool.

Maybe Nov/Dec will come with a few surprises. Maybe not. Either way, it's both awesome to hit my original goal and disappointing to realize I'm going to miss my stretch.

Great month for savings, bad month for investments! I will reach my goal next week 😁 (except HSA).

Bucket            Goal         Current
--------------------------------------
401k        $19,500.00      $19,500.00
Roth 1      $28,750.00      $28,750.00
Brokerage   $45,000.00      $38,670.18
401k Match   $9,750.00       $9,750.00
Roth 2       $6,000.00       $6,000.00
HSA          $4,000.00       $2,949.94
Savings          $0.00           $0.00
--------------------------------------
Total      $113,000.00      $105,620.12

Progress                        93.47%

[not started] - [on track] - [behind] - [completed] - [exceeded]

Another good month on the savings front - November and December won't be as good. Reached my stretch-stretch goal for the year!!!

Also a bad month on the spending side (ugh) BUT I didn't lower my savings, just did some serious juggling in my budget.

I changed the way I count my Roth 2 in this table. Since I normally lump sum it in January, I actually save for it the previous year. So I reset that to show savings for 2022 backdoor instead of the 2021 lump sum I made back in January. Did the same thing for my HSA.

Bucket            Goal         Current
--------------------------------------
401k        $19,500.00      $19,500.00
Roth 1      $28,750.00      $28,750.00
Brokerage   $45,000.00      $55,254.42   - $45k was the stretch goal (up from $35k). $55k was the stretch-stretch goal :) New unofficial goal is $60k
401k Match   $9,750.00       $9,750.00
Roth 2       $6,000.00       $4,000.00
HSA          $3,600.00       $3,166.60
Savings          $0.00           $0.00
--------------------------------------
Total      $122,600.00      $120,421.02

Progress                        98.22%

Had some big planned expense come up this month, but I maxed out my 401k for the first time ever, feels great to have protected that chunk of my income from taxes this year! I do not see myself reaching my goal this year, I knew it was a long shot coming into it. This has given me inspiration for next year, and think reaching the 50K mark then will be likely! I plan to add most of my income directly into my savings account for the reminder of the year to be used to pay off a large chunk of my remaining student loans when they begin collecting interest once again next year. I will likely add several hundred to my taxable as well to keep that account growing! Congratulations to everyone who is reaching their goals!

Still a bit behind. I think I'll most likely end at around 42k or 43k, but you never know! Good year regardless.

The percentage goal for me to be on track for October is 91.67%.

Savings$6,000$7,271.12
Goal$71,700$80,715.06112.57%(+10.90% to goal)
Stretch$100,000$80,715.0680.72%(-10.95 to goal)

Update:
Chugging along per normal in November. At this point, it is guaranteed I won't hit my stretch goal for 2021. I'll probably add another $5k in December, which will leave me about $15k short of my goal. Looking back on the year, the failure came from two places:
  • A lot of big home repairs showed up and forced me to scale back Oct/Nov/Dec savings.
  • I am paid from commission and we've only hit about 50% of our goal for the year as a company.
For point 1, I probably could have hit my goal this year with money earned, but the wife and I made a decision to invest heavily into our home in Q4. It is definitely worth the cost, but the costs are high and I'm having to both divert the money I would have saved and dip into my Emergency Fund to cover some of it. I had planned to use a bit of a nest egg we'd built over the year to cover the gap in savings, but with these recent expenses, that fund has dwindled to zero.

I think the bigger impact was point 2, my commissions. I make a significant income. Even so, I should have doubled my commission this year. The problems  was a failure of our Product team to fix some issues and allow us to innovate, of the Marketing team to support the sales team in any meaningful way, and of Sales failing to figure out how to get in front of prospects during COVID. I've been talking to our CEO about this stuff and I'm seeing actual improvement. He seems to have come out of his funk and realized he's let things fester. He's making big, important changes and I'm bullish again for next year.

Still, this was suppose to be our year. I'm disappointed that I won't hit $100k.

OMG is that possible? I will have to review my records and double check but HOLY crap! LOL. Obviously I'm not as good with my financial records as most people on this forum, but this time I am NOT complaining. Will double check records when I have time and maybe post a correction.

Had some unplanned expenses come up this month, so I'm happy with the forward progress! I knew 50k was going to be a long stretch for my first year, but I am hopeful I will reach it next year! Additionally, I forgot about a second retirment fund I've been having deducted from my paycheck, and will add it here next month, but will likely remain short of 50k goal but the addition of the fund should bring me close to 45k on the year!

Another good month on the savings front - November and December won't be as good. Reached my stretch-stretch goal for the year!!!

Also a bad month on the spending side (ugh) BUT I didn't lower my savings, just did some serious juggling in my budget.

I changed the way I count my Roth 2 in this table. Since I normally lump sum it in January, I actually save for it the previous year. So I reset that to show savings for 2022 backdoor instead of the 2021 lump sum I made back in January. Did the same thing for my HSA.

Bucket            Goal         Current
--------------------------------------
401k        $19,500.00      $19,500.00
Roth 1      $28,750.00      $28,750.00
Brokerage   $45,000.00      $55,254.42   - $45k was the stretch goal (up from $35k). $55k was the stretch-stretch goal :) New unofficial goal is $60k
401k Match   $9,750.00       $9,750.00
Roth 2       $6,000.00       $4,000.00
HSA          $3,600.00       $3,166.60
Savings          $0.00           $0.00
--------------------------------------
Total      $122,600.00     $120,421.02

Progress                        98.22%

Bucket            Goal         Current
--------------------------------------
401k        $19,500.00      $19,500.00
Roth 1      $28,750.00      $28,750.00
Brokerage   $45,000.00      $57,514.57   - $45k was the stretch goal (up from $35k). $55k was the stretch-stretch goal :) New unofficial goal is $60k
401k Match   $9,750.00       $9,750.00
Roth 2       $6,000.00       $6,000.00
HSA          $3,600.00       $3,383.26
Savings          $0.00           $0.00
--------------------------------------
Total      $ $124,897.83   $120,421.02

Progress                        110.92%

[not started] - [on track] - [behind] - [completed] - [exceeded]

Moving along... Finished saving for next year's Backdoor Roth (if it still exists) and saved another $2.2k in brokerage. I won't reach my mega-stretch goal of $60k in brokerage due to, hmmm... vacation, but that's ok since my original goal in January was $35k and I blew that out of the water :)

Whelp . . . it looks like I'm going to flunk out of this one for the first year since 2017.

Despite a mid-year promotion (after which, if obtained, my stated goal was 60k), I'm currently projecting $44,452 on 31 December. I'm owed a significant amount in pending reimbursements, but I don't think it's going to be enough to put me over the line.

The problem: $15k medical expenditures and  - yes, you're reading this right - over $7,690 in veterinary and animal-associated spending.

It's spending in line with my values, but dang, adult-ing hit the pocketbook hard this year.

Oh, well. Here's to better luck next year!
