Save 50k single 100k couple in 2020
« on: December 25, 2019, 09:32:30 AM »
Time to start the 2020 version of this thread.

We are planning a move overseas around mid-2020 so my goals reflect that, we hope to get some extra cash from selling many of our belongings but that's not technically 'saving' so I'm projecting that here.

HSA $5100
HSA Match $2000
401K Pre Tax $19500
401K Pre Tax Match $9750
Roth IRA $6000
Mortgage Principal $5600 - Planning to move in July/August
Taxable Account ESPP  $10000 - Planning to move in July/August

Total: $57950

In! Thanks for starting. I'm going to be making significantly less this year, so 50k is going to be a big stretch but a challenge will help increase the likelihood of success.

We had a lot of spending in 2019 that we had planned to stretch over a few years. It will be nice to be back on track for 2020!

Thanks for starting a new thread!  After a few years, we are taking a slightly different approach for 2020. I'm not including the 'extra' mortgage principal we are plowing into the mortgage because we are currently projecting paying it off in July of 2020 if bonuses are good next year.  Also, I'm separating employer $ from our saved earnings.  This demonstrates that only 10% of our goals are met by extra employer contributions. However, employer contributions are only possible if we also contribute. We don't enjoy any automatic 401k or HSA contributions at this time.

Our 2020 Goals (couple) are:
$   19,500-Mrs. 401k contributions
$   19,500-Mr. 401k contributions
$     4,040-Mrs. HSA contributions
$       750-Mrs. HSA contributions
$100,000-Taxable Investments/Savings
$    6,000-Other mid-term savings
$149,790 subtotal

$    8,700-Mrs. 401k match
$    5,800-Mr. 401k match
$    1,560-Mrs. HSA employer contributions
$       750-Mr. HSA employer contributions
$16,810 subtotal

$166,600 GRAND TOTAL

I'm going to follow the OPs lead and include mortgage principal.  And I am "fortunate" to have some catch-up provisions kick in this year so I am going to try and really stretch myself.

I'm not counting on any HSA savings as I may need a couple of implants.

Welcome @SaucyAussie @Need2Save @ixtap @philli14 and good luck!

I am counting HSA since I want to ensure that I max it out, the expenses we do have may end up impacting the growth of our balance though. We don't plan to pay for medical out of pocket at this stage.

I will join again. I hit the 50k goal in 2019, but not my stretch goal.
So, I will try again this year (just including funds I have some control over, nothing that is stuck in pension schemes until age 63+).

Target:
tax exempt:                             5,270
Accrual/EF liquid saving:  15,000
Brokerage:                            39,730
Total:                                     60,000

I'm in for another year - thanks for starting the new thread!

Bucket           Goal
401k          $ 19,500
401k Match     $ 6,500
Roth IRA       $ 6,000
HSA            $ 3,550
Brokerage     $ 14,450
------------------------
Total         $ 50,000

This represents a projected 67% savings rate.  My realistic stretch goal is 70%, and crazy stretch is 75% (this would definitely require a larger raise than I'm anticipating).

2020 Goals (for couple): $135k; $154k including normal debt paydown.  No big jumps over last year's goal, as our income has flattened and there ain't too much more blood to squeeze from that orange without mutiny ensuing.  I am (and have been) re-prioritizing some savings in different directions as we start to approach our FIRE goal.

401k: $0 / $19500
401k match: $0 / $16500
SIMPLE IRA: $0 / $13500
SIMPLE Match: $0 / $3000
HSA: $0 / $5600
HSA Match: $0 / $1500
Backdoor Roth IRA: $0 / $6000
Mega Backdoor Roth: $0 / $16500
Taxable Brokerage: $0 / $51700
529 #1: $0 / $600
529 #2: $0 / $600

Total: $0 / $135000    0%

Regular mortgage principal and low-interest college debt principal paydown: $0 / $19000

Thanks for the new thread!

First half of the year, we're carrying two houses and doing a major remodel so there won't be any "extras." Hoping for a little catchup once our current house sells in late spring/early summer.

I'm in. Single here. I went from NW of 47k to 98k in 2019 year (just getting started) and my goal is to get to 150k this year, so +52k in 2020.

Don't mean to get technical but in this thread we generally outline our contributions and omit any market gains, make it about what we can control basically.

That said, I'm the only one saving in my relationship so I don't think I'll get to $100k either.  As long as this can help motivate you to save slightly more than you might have otherwise it's all good.

Excited to participate this year after having to skip out last year. Couple

401k 1: $0 / $19,500
Match: $0 / $3,200
401k 2: $0 / $19,500
Match: $0 / $1,500
HSA: $0 / $7,100
2019 Roths: $0 / $12,000**
2020 Roths: $0 / $12,000
Cash (Efund/House DP): $0 / $37,200
============================
Total: $0 / $100,000 (0%)

This will be a big stretch for us this year. We're relocating to a higher COL city and baby will be starting daycare so savings rate will be taking a hit. But, that's why it's called a stretch goal.

**We are right on the cusp of whether we'll be able to contribute for 2019. Holding out to see what our numbers end up being. Not counting the 2019 amount toward our 2020 savings contributions goal since we have the funds currently in an HYSA.

Yes something I can participate(looking jealously at you "500k-1Mil race" thread.)

I hoping to open my own business Jan 2021. So I plan to save the majority of my income for 2020.

Checking: 1376.04
Savings: 1456.01
IRA: $0(I will be needing as many funds available as possible. Can you take money out for starting a business or would there be a penalty?)

I'm not sure if I should include HSA numbers. They give us free money from on the gf's insurance(works at a hospital, amazing coverage) for doing things like seeing our doctor etc.

I'll bite. Though I have a partner, I'm going solo in this challenge since he is still paying off some debt.

In terms of what I can pull off this year:

401k: 19500
401k match: 3500
IRA: 6000

Pretax total: 29000

Est. after-tax savings (based on a pretty comfy budget - I hope I can do better): 24000

Est. total: 53000

As long as I stay on budget and don't have any surprise expenses or splurges, I should be able to do this. Looking forward to tracking with y'all.

Found out what my raise will be for the year.  It's not bad, but won't quite cover (after taxes) the additional savings I'm hoping to make over last year.  Not anticipating my DW getting any raise.

Given that:
(a) my variable pay for last year was probably a bit higher than I'll get this year
(b) the slow creep of inflation will increase our expenses by some amount

I'll definitely need to find some additional savings this year to hit the mark.

Decent start to the year, a little spendy this month but not too bad. Negative savings as I transferred tIRA and HSA funds over immediately, and contributed 700 to savings this month.

End of January Update

401k 1: $1,624* / $19,500
Match: $266 / $3,200
401k 2: $1,476 / $19,500

HSA: $546 / $7,100
2019 Roths: $1,468 / $12,000
2020 Roths: $0 / $12,000
Cash (Efund/House DP): $1,248 / $37,200
============================
Total: $6,744 / $100,000 (6.7%)

*401k 1 currently reports YTD contributions as higher than actual (it includes final contribution from last year's 12/31 paycheck since it hit the account this year). Explains the decrease in amount tracked thus far from mid-January update.

Currently a little behind schedule since I was hoping to save a little more than $3k after tax but we have some large expenses and taxes due so need to deploy cash there.

I got a promotion at work with a nice raise, so I'm upping my goal to $60k!  It's definitely a stretch goal, but I think it's in the realm of reality.  The new goal requires a 74% savings rate for the year.

Can I join the fun? Here are our 2020 goals, along with our progress as of the end of February:

Bucket                        Current              Goal            Note
401k                          $    8,543     /     $  57,000
403b                          $           0     /     $  19,500     I'm returning to work in July after an 11 year break; hitting this goal depends on the max % allowed
HSA                            $       850     /     $    7,100
2019 Roth IRAs          $  12,000     /     $  12,000
Taxable Brokerage     $  12,500     /     $  67,000
Mortgage Principal     $  10,534     /     $  13,500
------------------------------------
Total                           $  44,427     /     $ 176,100

Progress: 25%

For us, the first quarter of each year includes extra income from bonuses, salary deferral payouts, etc. Our progress will slow down after March or April.
