Made a 9% jump toward getting on track for the goal with this last paycheck. DH got a bonus that we were able to put toward his 401K and the Student Loan which was great.

Unfortunately with how his 401k and HSA accounts are set up, they may not let us increase the contributions as planned throughout the rest of the year since it's over the percentage max they allow. Sucks but he will be getting a significant raise next month so moving forward, we plan to put additional funds toward the student loan. And I may get a small bonus next month as well that will also go toward the student loan so we're still tracking right along toward the goal for the year.

End of August update:

401K:                $14,087 / $18,500 - Still having to adjust contributions to ensure I get the full matching throughout the year, I really wish we had a true-up matching plan :(
401k matching:  $4,018/ $5,000 - may be a bit more or less depending on hours, but this is typical - if short here I'll try and make up elsewhere
IRA:                  $8,835 / $8,835  - Goal Achieved
HSA:                  $2,116 / $3,450 - On track
Taxable:             $11,227 / $17,550 - Starting to make this up now.

Total:                 $40,283 / $53,335 (adjusted up $3,335 for 2017 IRA contribution) - 76% completed

Still on track to make this goal. 76% completed with only 67% of the year over. Stretch goal of $60 may in fact be doable.

1 October Update:
401K:                $15,131 / $18,500 - Still having to adjust contributions to ensure I get the full matching throughout the year, I really wish we had a true-up matching plan :(
401k matching:  $4,487.89/ $5,000 - On track to exceed this goal
IRA:                  $8,835 / $8,835  - Goal Achieved
HSA:                  $2,451 / $3,450 - On track
Taxable:             $12,827 / $17,550 - Catching up now.

Total:                 $43,732 / $53,335 (adjusted up $3,335 for 2017 IRA contribution) - 72% completed

Still on track to make this goal. 82% completed with only 77% of the year over. Pretty sure I'll exceed the initial goal, $60k stretch goal may be a bit of a stretch. I've been spending extra on hobbies that I could have put towards it, but I'm okay with that (and I've already paid for most of my first vacation for next year).

I should be able to fill my pre-tax bucket sometime here in October so it'll slow down a bit after the next huge bump. Blew past my target but my project is on skeleton hours for a bit here so we'll see how far over I can go.

The wife's tax-advantaged accounts will get filled next year and then I'll have to figure out the last bit of tax math I've been slowly researching / putting off (save in my corporation vs taxable).

You're doing great, @ToughMother !!  :)

Thanks @NinetyFour . Gotta admit it is SUCH a different experience with a much lower income.  I've had some house projects I'm dragging my heels on and there is simply less breathing room.  Toying with applying for a gig at my new university that would nearly double my salary, but right now I'm scheduled to be on the search committee for the position.  Ugh - such dilemmas.

Your hikes and the landscape are truly inspiring.  While you seem busy, you seem happy and that is everything.  Congrats on your leap and for sharing the path with us all!

As expected, I didn't save as much last month since I had high vet bills in August that were paid off in September. September was another high spending month, between car expenses (all expected, but I still spent about $800 that I don't normally spend) and another $700 in dog expenses that I don't think will be ending any time soon. I just spend another $130 in meds and she has a vet appointment this weekend that might result in surgery and another appointment coming up at the dermatologist. Good thing she's cute! Still on track to complete my savings goal in December though.

So I'm new here, but figured I'd post my progress since this seemed like the right place.  I think I'm on track to reach 100% for this year, but I'm not sure I will actually end up moving the cash into investments.  I have set aside a large chunk of cash which would normally go towards taxable but I haven't invested it yet, so I'm not counting it yet (Holding cash for potential land purchase/seed capital for a commune).  I think if that goes through, I'll need to revisit a lot of my prior assumptions about my savings.

Made an 8% jump toward our goal the last two weeks due to a raise that took effect and a small bonus we were able to allocate toward the student loan. Now tracking to complete the goal which is great - for several months, we were tracking behind.

Let us not speak of my investment returns.  All will work out there eventually.

Goals (single):

$39,415 TFSA [Full]
$34,532 RRSP [Full]
$31,053 Taxable / Spouse [11,797 Done]

Date To Date   /  Goal %
Jan 2018 $4,035.22   /  $64,539 6.3%
Feb 2018 $8,027.74   /  $64,539 12.4%
Mar 2018 $12,975.69   /  $73,947 17.5%
Apr 2018 $16,968.21   /  $73,947 22.9%
May 2018 $31,461.39   /  $73,947 42.5%
June 2018 $39,302.70   /  $73,947 53.1%
July 2018 $47,302.70   /  $73,947 64%
Aug 2018 $57,302.70   /  $73,947 77.5%
Sep 2018 $65,302.70   /  $73,947 88.3%
Oct 2018 $85,744.72   /  $73,947 115.9% (+20,442.02)

Well the overtime sure paid off with this enormous month (all overtime from the start of the year, though the summer had none). I kept my money in the company until my vacation / severance amount is covered once I filled my RRSP's. Now it's time to start charging the wife attribution to fill her accounts, that should be another fun spreadsheet..

I will revise my tracked goal starting next month to $105,000 so I still have to stretch a bit to get there (that's accounting for a bit of overtime worked).

The wife's tax-advantaged accounts will get filled next year and then I'll have to figure out the last bit of tax math I've been slowly researching / putting off (save in my corporation vs taxable).

1 November Update:
401K:                $16,550 / $18,500 - Still having to adjust contributions to ensure I get the full matching throughout the year, I really wish we had a true-up matching plan :(
401k matching:  $5,127/ $5,000 - This goal is met and will continue to be exceeded for the rest of the year
IRA:                  $8,835 / $8,835  - Goal Achieved
HSA:                  $3,086 / $3,450 - On track
Taxable:             $12,175 / $17,550 - Had some family medical issues come up, so pulled some out. Still plan to reach this goal by the end of the year though.

Total:                 $45,773 / $53,335 (adjusted up $3,335 for 2017 IRA contribution) - 86% completed

October Notes:
  • Looks pretty good overall for the year, although November will be a little less than usual in the taxable account due to the dog. I added up that I've spent nearly $3,000 on her in the last 3 months, so at least I know where my money is going.
  • The biggest thing to note for October was that according to mint my net worth went down about the amount I've saved this year. So that's a bummer.
  • My 401(K) should max out on my first December paycheck, but since I changed jobs during the year I'll need to let my 401(K) company know so they don't overwithhold. Hopefully they will not make this painful.

Single and aiming to save $55,000 in 2018, for about a 50% savings rate. I started a new job 3 months ago and I won't be able to join the 401(k) until July 1. So I am hoping to max out my 401(k) in the last six months of the year.

Update:

Turns out I'm eligible to join the 401(k) with my May paycheck (we are paid once per month). Also I decided to fund my Roth IRA.

Edit: As of 11/29
Goal: $100k (Stretch $120k)

Stash accounts
403b - 17035 / 18500
SIMPLE IRA - 12000 / 12500
401a - 7203 / 6000
SIMPLE match - 2400 / 2500
Backdoor Roth - 5500 / 5500
I bonds - 10000 / 10000
(Other) Taxable - 40878 / 27000

Other savings
529 #1 - 5550 / 6000
529 #2 - 5550 / 6000
Extra principal on mortgage - 5000 / 6000

Total: $111116 / 100000

Savings goal crushed with two months to go!  New stretch goal of $120k will depend upon potential kitchen remodel scope and timeline.  Kitchen remodel costs so far: $2400.  Looks like the bulk of the costs there will be pushed into next year, so it's going to be close on the stretch goal.  Christmas costs and an upcoming $800 vacation cost I pulled into this year are making it challenging.

Nov 2018 $91,492.17   /  $105,000 (Revised) 87.1% (+5747.45)

Revised my year end goals to match all the overtime money I sunk in last month. It will be close but I think I can make it.

Though we split the savings between our accounts to maximize tax advantages my wife wants to track separately so she doesn't feel like she's getting a handout in the long term.

Haven't been on here in a couple months as the market has been doing its thing and I've been a bit more spendy with life upgrades I'd been putting off.

Bucket           Current                Goal
401k              $14,771               $18,500
Match             $666                   $1,332
Roth IRA         $5,500                $5,500
HSA                $3,262                $3,262
Brokerage       $34,503               $22,738
Total               $58,702              $51,332

I'm not entirely sure how I got to my brokerage number a couple months ago, but adding up all my buys from Vanguard definitely brought me to a higher total than I had originally counted...by about 7k.  So in the last couple months, I've added $9,300, plus adding in the amount I'd somehow miscalculated before.  Over the 50k line, so :)

Going to be a lazy person but, Taxable, retirement, matching, HSA and house principal.  I'm not going to make my goal because I decided to move up a major landscaping project to FY 2018.  I'm incredibly please with the results and honestly while I could have done some of the project DYI, I would never have done other parts because frankly I don't have the mechanical toys nor the skills to work with those toys.  (Terra-forming a hill in the back yard and placing huge rock steps in it.)

$63,239.89/$75,000

I'll add another $2-3000 in December with my 401k and match but not more than that.

End of November Update

401k 1: $17,183 / $18,500
Match: $2,845 / $3,000
401k 2: $15,749 / $18,500
HSA: $5,749 / $6,900
2017 Roths: $5,000 / $5,000
2018 Roths: $11,000 / $11,000
Student Loan Debt Paid: $27,955 / $31,000
============================
Total: $85,481 / $92,900 (92%)

One last month to hit our goal. Unfortunately we won't be able to max the HSA or DH's 401k, but hoping to make up the difference by putting more toward the student loan. And there's the potential for an end of year bonus but we're not counting on it.

I'm in a similar situation with a backyard project throwing off any acceleration of savings but the joy a finished yard will bring outweighs the downside from having to work omy.

December update - due to family medical problems involving lots of hospital time and new costs to support, I'm spending around $11k on various things to support that. I'll hit my goal on the 401k, exceed the 401k matching amount, and make my IRA/HSA goals. The taxable account isn't going to meet goals though. That's life however, and having the money there to support family emergencies like this is one of the reasons I strive to have a good financial picture.

I met my goal!    my savings rate for the year is 47%.   Not impressive given the income, but I also paid cash for a car, had some repairs done on the house, and had solar panels installed.  Hoping that I'm setting myself up for a massive SR next year.   A few years ago I was up in the 70% savings rate range and I think next year could look like that again.  :)  Would be great to save that much in a year when the stock market is on sale!

2018 YEAR END PROGRESS
$18,500 / $ 18,500 -- 401k Mrs
$  6,669 / $   6,593 -- 401k Match Mrs
$18,500 / $ 18,500 -- 401k Mr
$10,123 / $   5,122 -- 401k Match Mr
$  5,516 / $   5,230 -- HSA Mrs
$  1,170 / $   1,670 -- HSA Mr
$98,625 / $ 60,000 -- Taxable Investments
$  8,400 / $   8,000 -- Other Savings
$34,649 / $ 30,900 -- Extra Principal Payments
$202,153 / $154,515 -- TOTAL GOAL FOR 2018

131% of our target for the year.  We only fell short on one goal (HSA) on DH's side because he didn't get the full employer contribution for not doing an activity based credit.  He's set up to get all the employer credits for 2019 now so he won't miss out on anything, even though it was small amount of money. Looking ahead to 2019, we should be able to set a goal around $172k but bonuses are always a wild card. Could be great, could be weak. I hope everyone was able to meet their goals in 2018 and if not, they can find ways to do so in 2019!

Who wants to start up the 2019 thread?

Q4 update:

                GOAL            Q4             %
457:  24,500.00   24,499.89    100.0% *know it makes me nuts that I couldn't hit this perfectly
    403b: 24,500.00   24,500.00    100.0%
pension:   9,200.00     9,735.72    105.8% *I think this is 100% plus bc my goal/estimate was off
   total:  58,200.00   58,735.61    100.9%

And that ends my run of $50K+/year savings.  I took a big salary reduction this year, so for 2019, I'll only be saving in my 457 (and pension).  Can't swing a 403b with the $ hit.

Rock on big savers!

End of year summary.

Married; dual income (wife is part time); 2 kids

HSA                   $4900 / $4900
HSA Match             $2000 / $2000
401K After Tax       $29062 / $29058
401K Employer Match   $7434 / $7442
401K Pre Tax         $18500 / $18500
Roth IRA              $5500 / $5500
Wife Traditional IRA  $5500 / $5500
Mortgage Principal    $8834 / $8834
Taxable Account       $7000 / $7000
Wife 401K              $500 / $0
Wife 401K Match        $143 / $0

Total:               $89373 / $88734 (100.7%)

We made it to our goal.  Had no problems with being able to meet our normal needs and quite a few wants.  Wife got a new job and is now able to contribute to her 401K.  So, we got some extra savings there.

I'm thinking we'll be able to change her 401K to save 80% of her salary next year.  Then we'd be able to easily get to $100k savings next year, as well as save a bunch on taxes.

Congratulations to everyone on this challenge!

Goals (single):

$39,415 TFSA [Full]
$34,532 RRSP [Full]
$31,053 Taxable / Spouse Accounts [39,382 Done]

Date To Date   /  Goal %
Jan 2018 $4,035.22   /  $64,539 6.3%
Feb 2018 $8,027.74   /  $64,539 12.4%
Mar 2018 $12,975.69   /  $73,947 17.5%
Apr 2018 $16,968.21   /  $73,947 22.9%
May 2018 $31,461.39   /  $73,947 42.5%
June 2018 $39,302.70   /  $73,947 53.1%
July 2018 $47,302.70   /  $73,947 64%
Aug 2018 $57,302.70   /  $73,947 77.5%
Sep 2018 $65,302.70   /  $73,947 88.3%
Oct 2018 $85,744.72   /  $73,947 115.9%
Nov 2018 $91,492.17   /  $105,000 (Revised) 87.1%
Nov 2018 $113,328.69   /  $105,000 (Revised) 107.9% (+21,836.52)

Cashed out a bunch of overtime in my company to keep corporate taxation down and received a completely surprise gift from my father (I did not think my parent's were in the position to ever gift me money so this is new). Plugged in a ton of money ($21,836) but only saw my net worth go up ~$7087 which is insane. Cheap stocks FTW.

Though we split the savings between our accounts to maximize tax advantages my wife wants to track separately so she doesn't feel like she's getting a handout in the long term.

Q4:
                         GOAL     YTD      %
SE401k:                 18.5K     18.5K    100%
401k employer side:     12.5K     12.5K    100%
IRA:                     5.5K     5.5K     100%
HSA:                    3.45K     3.45K    100%
taxable:               10.05K     41.05K   408%
total:                    50K     81K      162%

Not a big change from Q3 to Q4. In my business I buy a lot of supplies in Q4 for which the sales don't really flow back in my bonuses until Q1. C'est la vie.

2019 Goals:
                         GOAL     YTD      %

401k employer side:    12.5K
IRA:                      6K
HSA:                    3.5K
taxable:                 14K
total:                   55K

Good idea. Since B42 is in a better place, I'll throw the new one out there-

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
