I think you've still got a good chance of making your goal even with the reductions.

Heh, I've been very fortunate this year and this forum and even this particular thread has made that sink in. If I have four more years like this one, I'll be set.  Still did much better with a goal than I would have without one. :)

Hang on... you've saved $202k this year?
Tho I didn't count retirement founds, it was kind of an exceptional year for us...

How on earth did you achieve that??

Yeah, it was a great year for saving. A few years ago I did a case study and was raked over the coals for spending that same amount. (I had budgeted for it due to a new house and new furniture, but what a waste and a lost opportunity from investing during the biggest recovery years!)

Here's how it came about:
1.  Self-employed and my billing rate assumes that I am only billable 60% of the time, but I've been billable for 100% of the time. (Luckily fell into a long-teem contract instead of many small contracts and having to drum up business)
2.  Took on a second contract because you never know when the first one will end. When #1 didn't end, just ended up doing #2 as a side gig. (At the same rate, on nights/weekends)
3.  Kept overhead low
4.  Got most of my spending wants fulfilled over the past 2 years. House is now furnished and painted. I should be able to rein in expenses for 15 years or so.

I realize just how fortunate I've been in the past few years, but I offset that good fortune in my mind because I compare my account balances to what I would have if I had just saved 15-20 percent over he past 25 years of working and invested wisely. I am just now catching up to where I should be in terms of retirement savings. A few more years of being extremely fortunate and I'll be where any regular non-MMM but smart saver can be if they work and save for 30 years. So while I feel like I'm winning on an annual basis looking solely at the numbers, when you look long-term, anybody with time and years ahead of them can beat me at this game.

Looking back, my biggest errors have been:
1. Churning in my investment accounts. No investment policy so I just panic-sold through the past 15 years.
2.  When moving, feeling that I had to have my house furnished and painted (professionally) and decorated immediately. Overpaid for furnishings and unhappy with many of the items chosen. This has been a recurring theme with every move I've had.
3. Of course not saving enough.

Well, you've caught up pretty fast. When will you FIRE then and at what age?
Congrats on the results, it's rather impressive!

Well, I can go 12 more years and FIRE at 60 and have a pretty spendy and comfortable retirement.  But I'm really trying to feel more confident with long-term reduced spending and if I can do that, I'm looking at 7 years from now and 55.  If I sell my house and move to a lower COLA, I can go much sooner.

That's another benefit that younger people have over older people -- you guys have more time to accept and believe that the MMM lifestyle can be sustained.  My brain can understand the concept, but my emotions are slower in catching up with it.

October: -$1,650.96.

$41,610.00/50k. (83.2%)

First backward month. Most of the bill for the new used car came due this month. May not hit goal because of it, but at least it's over.

I never set my goals earlier.  So counting my pensions $55K or no pension $40K.

This is motivating so I will play along.

With my 2015 taxes done I now have some benchmarks:

TFSA        $12,625
RRSP       $11,400
Other       $16,000
Sub Total   $40,000

Pension     $15,000
Grand total $55,000

I'm getting close.
TFSA 68%
RRSP 100%
Other 0% (This is low because I have a larger emergency fund than originally planned. This EFund may become "savings" by year end.)
Pension 86% (This is on auto pilot so I can't really take credit.)

Total without Emergency Fund 60% saved.
Total with Emergency Fund 85%  saved
Based on 10 months I should be at 83% so my goal should be possible if I don't need that EFund money.

Many would count an Emergency Fund as savings but if it is just saved for deferred maintenance I don't think it should count.  Also, unless I put the "other" money into my investment account I don't want to count it as it is too easy to spend and I am really trying to become better at "investing" and not just "saving".

Great thread, I would so love to be able to do this in 2017.  My best rough estimate for 2016 is saving about $60K as a couple.

Fund                        Goal                     2016 savings in September

College for DS           $12k                     $12000 (and 36 cents)
TSP                         above 10%             $6948 (does not include matching)
Roth                        get one open          $1375
New house               whatever I can       $21947 (some of this was "snowflake money")

September 2016 total = $42,270.  I might make it to $50k!

ETA: I see a lot of people added their match.  So I'll add that:

TSP match+basic      max the match       $3391

September 2016 total = $45661.  That puts me closer to the $50k challenge!

I've added $4927 since this post, so with almost two months left, I've managed $50,588 toward savings!

I will have to try to set a similar goal for next year.  There will be a few obstacles (pay cut goes into affect in September), but hopefully some of my spending will go down too.  I've already canceled a $90/month expense, my son contributes $125/month toward bills (I have him saving most of his income for college, this is his share of some of the bills, like gas, insurance, cell phone.)  I've also increased my retirement contributions, so hopefully I get close.  I spent a lot on building my quilting stash this year, so that expense should go down quite a bit next year, now that I have a nice little pile to keep me busy.

Update

Couple:
Her 403b: 21,864/18,000
His 401k: 18,000/18,000
Her Roth: 5500/5500
His Roth: 5500/5500
HSA: 0/3350 (need to get on this by EOY)
Taxable: 34,000/50,000

Progress: 85% to goal and 87% through the year. We're not on track to hit our taxable contribution, but I've added in my employer 403b contribution to inch us forward a bit.  I suspect we can get around 10k more into our taxable with the four remaining pay periods, so we'll likely land around 98% to goal

We made it.

Saved ~$125k + another $15k in appreciation of portfolio throughout the year.

Going to finish the year with an 80% savings rate for myself and ~60% for my SO (she doesn't track as accurately as I do lol).

Impressive!  Do you make a boatload of money or have you optimized your spending to be super spending efficient?  That is really great!  Congratulations.

Hey there BlueHouse, this year it's a combination of good earnings and relatively low spending.

Our combined net income will be ~$170k for the year, spending @$45k in a very HCOL area. Not super frugal by MMM standards but compared to our income and where we live it's pretty badass, 73.5% savings rate.

11 * 2500 to taxable = 27500
10 * 1500 to 401k = 15000
--------
42500
+ employer match somewhere in the $4000 range right now
--------
$46,500 so far

Planning another $2500k taxable and 3k more in the 401k to max that out + another 800ish in employer match. Will clear the bar with employer matching, but not without it  based on current plans.

I have some money in traditional IRA already and exceed the max for a traditional IRA being tax deductible as well as the max for being able to contribute to a Roth IRA directly. So my option would be a backdoor Roth...at which point they would tax it based on the amount already in the traditional IRA as a conversion. So I'd owe tax on like 90% of anything I tried to backdoor Roth since the stuff in the traditional IRA right now was deductible when it went in.

I've got a plan for next year to get back into the AGI where I can contribute directly to a Roth IRA. Partly because I'm no longer renting a room out in my house and my gross income will be down a bit. I'll also have access to an HSA to hide $3400 in. That was not an option this year as I had no HDHP choices available.

Making too much money is a great problem to have! I am going through the hassle of screwing up a backdoor Roth after recharecterizing my January 2016 Roth contribution because I went above the income limits. I didn't know about Pro Rata though, luckily my 401k plan will allow me to absorb my entire rollover tIRA and then do the Roth conversion so taxes should be minimal, in theory.

So we actually did end up with a couple good raises this year, that let us increase the amount we dumped into our taxable account - still not quite enough to get us there, but better than anticipated.
401Ks - 36,000 (36,000)
Employer match - 7000 (7600)
T-IRAs - 11,000 (11,000)
Mortgage principal - 8000 (7500)
Investment returns - 15,000 (13,000)
Taxable - 10,000 (20,000)
So that puts us (assuming no market crash between now and the year's end) at roughly 95,000 - about 8K better than anticipated, and within spitting distance of the gauntlet!

RRSP 1- 3k
RRSP 2- 15k
TFSA 1- 15k
TFSA 2- 15k
Mortgage principal- 12k
Pension 1- 14k
Pension 2- 16k
RESP- 2.5k
That gives me a total of 92.5k.  Need an extra 7.5K, which is the stretch for us!  So we'll say an extra 7.5k for TFSA 1 :)

Jan: $4000
Feb: $4000
Mar: $9478
Apr: $4000
May: $2000
June: $2121
July: $2000
August: 0
September: $5000
October: $4000
November: $4500
December: $6500

Total: $47500+
Pension 1: 16184
Pension 2:
Mortgage Principal: 11929
Final Total:

I think we are going to hit 90k, which was about my original prediction.  Plus we had 5k in unexpected home repairs, so we didn't do too badly!

Alrighty - year end is in sight now.  Here is how the Need2Save family is going to finish the year on this challenge!

401k #1 Goal $18,000:  $18,000 (right on)
401k #2 Goal $18,000:  $18,000 (right on)
HSA Goal $6,750:  $6,750 (right on with employer seed $)
Taxable Invest Goal $14,300:  $20,900 (more than projected - yeah!)
Other Taxable Savings Goal $10,800:  $10,350 (slightly less-due to timing)
401k Match #1 $11,000:  $12,655 (more than projected - yeah!)
401k Match #2 $5,500:  $10,394 (more than projected - yeah!)
529 College Goal $9,998: $9,960 (very close)
Other College Savings Goal $9,000:  $9,000 (right on)
Extra Principal Payments Goal $27,668:  $28,021 (a little more than projected - yeah!)

TOTAL ACTUAL BY END of Q4 $144,030 ($28,088 saved in Q4)
110% of our original goal of $131,016!!

Now who is up for 2017 challenge now?
We may be up for a $150k target for next year.  Since we got to $144k this year, that may sound like easy street, but I know that our 401(k) match will be at least $9k less next year, possibly closer to $14k between both of us and bonuses are very uncertain which help us with our taxable investment goals.

I'm in! Forecast is calling for ~101k saved next year which is way up from the ~73k saved this year so it will be a tall order but would love to have somewhere to track it.

As of now, I am projecting to exceed my goal of investing 50k and hit 52.6k. This does not include the 11k that I saved for finishing my premed classes and applying to medical school. Here's to next year!

Roth IRA: $5,500
401(k): $18,000
401(k) Match: $1,300
I Savings Bonds: $10,000
Taxable Investments: $9,743.77
Dividends/Interest: $3,639.82
Savings: $1,500

TOTAL:  $49,683.59

ORIGINAL GOAL:  ~$53,000
CURRENT GOAL: $50,000

Looks like I will fall short of my original projected $53,000 goal due to several large unexpected expenses, but I am only $316.41 shy of $50K for the year.  Should reach that by the end of this month.

When I updated my GnuCash accounting last Friday it said we had gone over $100k in "profits" for the year. I haven't looked yet to see how it all breaks down, but I'm suspecting it includes mutual fund dividends and other interest income (though not fund price increases). In any case, I didn't think we'd be near that number for 2016.

We are a couple(no kids) but since its only my income and my wife is going through school, I can considered us single for this challenge.

I will end up making $130K+ and take home just over $102K.
$52,000- savings by end of year.
$6,750- HSA.
$8,600- If I include principle on the 2 houses.
-------------
$67,xxx for the end. 66% of savings. Not bad considering its 1 income plus we are paying for her college right now too.

So far, this year:
$10K added to Vanguard taxable
$5.5K contributed to (backdoor) Roth IRA
$18K contributed to pre-tax 401K
$26K contributed to post-tax 401K
$18K contributed to girlfriend's pre-tax 401K
$2350 contributed to HSA
$1154 contributed to girlfriend's HSA (she left work and wasn't eligible for HSA in July)

$81004 contributed to investment/retirement accounts.
I'm not including 2015 IRA's that we did in early January, nor my girlfriend's 2016 IRA contribution she will make soon.

Additionally:
$10775 employer 401K matches, and $1500 employer HSA contribution.

Grand total: $93279.
However, NW climbed by around $170K - thanks to investment gains, but mostly due to beefing up cash position.
In the beginning of the year I had around $20K in available cash, whereas now I have closer to $70K.
This is higher than I aim to have, but it's mostly because the recent 2 months have been hectic with reselling, and I needed a lot of float.
I plan on buying lots of VTSAX soon enough.

It's looking to be $95,225 we saved (2 final months mortgage, investments and $3k cash saved) for the year.  Will have to try harder next year.

Damn, why do we still have a 35 year old van that runs on only three cylinders!??!?  Could have bought that Sprinter cash if it weren't for MMM.
