Run, Tubby-Tubby, run!
« on: April 13, 2018, 05:30:56 PM »
This is my weight loss thread. There are many like it, but this one is mine. I am Sir Samuel, I am a US military officer, and I am obese. I've never actually been lean, but I've kept the pudge within limits. Recently either age or Prozac has caught up with me. Now I'm well above weight requirements. I'm on official notice, I either lose the weight, or I lose my job.

That's the stick. Now I need a few carrots. I don't like physical possessions. Planning experience rewards sounds tiresome. Rewarding myself with food is counter productive. What I do like is the little frisson of happiness that comes from charity.

So here's the carrot. For every day I remain within 15% of my calorie goal, I'll donate $2 to the charity of my choice. For every pound I lose, I'll donate an additional $10. Donations to be made every 10 days, to keep motivation high. I'm way too impatient to wait a whole month to get my reward.

You, the Senate and People of the Forum can play along if you like. It’s going to take a village to skinny a Samuel up. Every 10 days I'll post my stats, the amount of money I'm donating, and the charity of my choice. You can either donate to the same charity, donate to a different charity, or just cheer along.

Week 0, 6-Apr:
Age:    37      (37, for you metric types)
Height: 64in    (162cm)
Weight: 184lbs  (84.3kg)
Neck:   13.5in  (34cm)
Waist:  36in    (91cm)
Hips:   44in    (111.7cm)

Waist:Hip = 0.81
Body Fat  = 42% (calculated, but the bioimpedance on my new scale = 49.9%)

Maximum allowed weight:   160lbs
Maximum allowed body fat: 34%

Minimum weight to lose: 24lbs (10kg)

I will donate $10 per pound lost.

@Prospector , don't you have a charitable thing happening? Is there a way to donate to it and get a tax receipt?

Hmm. You are an inch taller than in my head.

$5 per reporting period,  bonuses every 4 pounds lost.

Although the nice line up of 184 pounds and 84 kg is pleasing

Yes... If folks choose James to be the beneficiary of blubber  then there are Canaian and American accounts set up each with tax receipts available.  The links are at www.ridejamesride.com. I'll update tomorrow with links.

Thanks so much everyone!!

You can find James' accounts here:

US Charity: https://www.crowdrise.com/dashboard/ejautism/ridejamesride1  <-- can do tax receipts for US residents
CDN Charity: http://support.grandviewkidsfoundation.ca/site/TR?px=1010439&pg=personal&fr_id=1060  <-- can do tax receipts for CDN residents
Pay our expenses: https://www.gofundme.com/ridejamesride-james-rides-again <--- No tax receipts

If you give to either of the two charities, you are actually tripling your impact. Once to Sam, once to James, and again to the charities. Thanks to so many of you who have chosen us, and to Sam for being chubby and doing something about it.

$4/lb works out to be a nice round $100 or so, so I'm in for that, and $1/day for effort.

We're going to get notices every 10 days, yes?

I'll donate $3/lb.  How would you, Sam, feel about me donating to either Navy Marine Corps Relief Society or the Wingman Foundation.  That's where most of my charitable giving goes, so I'd just increase the amounts.  I know that's not quite the same flavor of "sailor" as you, so if that deeply offends you sensibilities, let me know!

Also, as a wife who has sweated many a PFA weigh-in on behalf of her spouse, and who has watched him starve himself for the week prior, I sympathize with your plight!

Hey everyone, especially @Sun Hat. I'm on a sea assignment, but my boat is in shipyard until Aug. A blessing and a curse. I've got 8 months to be at 160, but realistically I obviously need a safety buffer.

HOWEVER, I ain't no Navy wonk. You guys may be Haze Gray and Underway, but we are International Orange and, um, well Google tells me there aren't any english words that rhyme with orange.

@snacky will report for some vigorous and entertaining extra military instruction.

@deborah, sure I can go both ways.

First 10 day report tomorrow.

I never thought about the challenge of nothing rhyming with orange. Oof. Severely limits your shit talking opportunities. I mean, except for the fact that you're a branch the receives the utmost respect from everyone, so you don't really need to bother with shit talking.

On the other hand, the options for sea puns are really limitless, so at least you've got that going on.

I am trying to lose weight too. I weigh rather more than you, and if I get down to your weight I would be happy. I will donate the difference in our weight each time to ride James ride (that way they will get some of their expenses back).

I'm in for $5 (CAD) per pound.  There are 17 reporting periods before official weigh in day.  The first 8.5 go to RideJamesRide and the latter 8.5 go to Fistula Foundation that meadow lark posted about.

I am going to donate in a lump sum at the end, but I understand that incremental prizes as you go are more motivating. Should I lie and pretend I'm donating each 10 days, and log it as such?

If so I donated $28 today!

Should I specify that I pay in CAD and not your weird heathen American money that smells weird?

Way to go Sammy!!

Because I know details matter to you, the conversion of 181.2 lbs to metric seems off a little. 1.2 kg does not equal 181 lbs.

Woot! Off to a good start :-)

I'm belatedly realizing my creative accounting method will result in a lot of math, but oh well. Math is good for you. First donation will be $1 + $2 + (80% of $3) = $5.40. I think I will wait till the 2nd weigh-in to actually donate to minimize credit card fees since I'm starting small.

Been looking for a good way to support her that didn't involve enabling poor financial decisions.  This makes sense!

Harvest of Hope gets a $15 check because 2.8 lbs is close enough to 3.  Great Job SS!

I am so dumb... While I can't send out thankyou messages from the US giving site, I can thank the Mustachians I recognize here!! And so...

@LifeHappens   - Thanks for your donation to EJ Autism! James and I really appreciate knowing you believe in us!

@jeninco - Thank you for supporting James and I in our ride, having good people backing us is a push in the right direction!

@DCKatie09 - Thanks for your donation - it will go toward building a respite home for families who otherwise might never be able to get away from the stresses of raising a disabled child.
