Update:
Back positive again. November was a surprisingly positive month in the market. I honestly don't know what is swaying things. YTD my Net Worth has increased by 25%, from where I was on January 1st and it's put me ~11% closer to my FIRE/Net Worth goals. I am only 4.24% away from where I wanted to get too this year, so it's a real possibility. However, December is always an expensive month and I have no idea what the markets are going to do. Still, it's actually an attainable goal and that has me excited to see where I end up on 12/31.

That's a big deal. I haven't had a ton to be excited for this year, financially. Fingers crossed I can make it to the finish line!

@alcon835 , none of us have any idea what the markets are going to do in December, and if anyone tells you otherwise -- run!  However, I look at the S&P500 at 4,600 and we're still 4% lower than we were 2 years ago!   And if I assume the market should produce a 7-8% annual return it says the S&P would be at 5,500 right now.....which is about 20% above where it presently is.   So I am optimistic that the next 12 months will see some positive movement.   November was fantastic, let's take those months when we can get them, but keep one eye on the long term....these monthly swings can be maddening!  I struggle with it too -- looking at just my 401k account (invested in index funds) I see monthly swings ranging from about $65,000 negative to over $80,000 positive (which was November 2023!).

Keep at it, you're making great progress and the tailwind is coming -- we just don't know when, so let's be prepared for it!

Update:
What an end to 2023. I am officially half way to FIRE. I am legitimately blown away by this. I really don't have words for it. 2023 was a really, really weird year but the EOY growth was significant. Overall I got 13.02% closer to FIRE. Which is just, crazy to me. My overall net worth grew by 32.95%. Which, again, is just mind blowing to me. I also hit a big milestone in my investment account value, which is fun to look at! At the end of the day, nothing but the final number matters, but there are some sub numbers that feel so good to hit and I hit one of those in the last few weeks.

If 2022 & 2023 taught me anything, it's that persistence is key. I'm still behind where I wanted to be in 2023, but the persistent savings has meant HUGE gains as the market recovers. We're only a few dollars away from my most expensive investment into VTI, so I could be positive on all investments soon.

That said, 2024 is going to be a weird year. I plan to quit my job and take a mental sabbatical to reset my life, repair my marriage, and figure some stuff out. It could be up to six months without income. That's a BIG dent on working towards FIRE. I also don't know that I'll make nearly as much money as I'm making now in my next job. If I stay at my current job, I could reasonably expect to earn over $250k next year. That's a lot of money being left on the table.

But ya know, what's the point of life if we don't enjoy it. Why work and save if life is a slog.

Here's to 2024, may it be the year we hope it will be.

Good for you @alcon835 -- both on the financial gains in 2023 as well as taking time to re-assess, re-connect and re-prioritize.

Many of us sacrifice so much for our careers (myself included) that it truly does make you wonder if it is worth it.  I find myself questioning that more and more as I get closer to my target amount, but keep telling myself to just hang in there --- but the toll seems to be increasing.   So I'm glad you're doing this, as I have also been through the pain of a divorce and all that goes with it.

As for me, I ended 2023 just shy of 85% of my FIRE goal.  I don't really have a "Lean" and a "Fat" number.   And when I look back it was about 3.5 years ago that I was around the 50% mark, and that's with a very poor market in 2022.

Wishing you health, happiness and peace in 2024 as we all continue on our journeys.

2023 Q4 Update
2015: (August) 16.3%
2015: (end) 20.06%
2016: 13.15% (ah the difference of a mortgage)
2017: 14.4%
2018: 18.6%
2019: 23.9%
2020: 46.0% (sold rental)
2021 Q1: 52.8%
2021 Q2: 55.5%
2021 Q3: 56.7%
2021 Q4: 56.8%
2022 Q1: 50.8%
2022 Q2: 46.1%
2022 Q3: 43.2%
2022 Q4: 47.0%
2023 Q1: 51.0%
2023 Q2: 55.6%
2023 Q3: 58.1%
2023 Q4: 66.9%

All investments shrank slightly more overall than deposits/dividends over the quarter. But our 12-month trailing expenses dropped from $65k to $61.5k including mortgage P&I. ($47.2k without)

With investable assets growing 13.5%, and 12-month trailing expenses down to $60.4k, we're making great progress this quarter!

What a great finish to the year! I reached my goal with some room to spare, and even began to close in on my stretch goal. I am happy with the way the year played out, as I become over 11% closer to being Financially Independent! Congratulations to everyone who reached there goals, and also those who continued the journey toward their goals!

This next year is hard to predict financially, as I will be moving this spring and beginning a new job. If expense can remain low with the move (and new mortgage), I may be able to reach my goal for the year. Future years will have continual salary increases which will accelerate my savings!

A satisfying end to the year. Up 18%, including contributions/savings. But, market returns were almost 2x my own additions. Wowzers! @alcon835 I know that mind blowing feeling you are talking about well. Ever since I hit about 50%, maybe even a bit before, just looking at different metrics can leave me astounded in a different way.

True, but we are pretty neck and neck right now. Having a home is a level of security I can't afford, at least not in this area.

Currently around 33% or so, have made decent progress the last two years.

Both my wife and I work in a fairly commission heavy job and things are harder now. Much harder than they were for a few previous years (mortgage lending). I'm so torn between throwing extra money into IRA/taxable account and keeping money in checking/savings in case there are a few bad months. Part of me just wants to bite the bullet and throw extra money into the 'stash and know that things will be okay!

It's been too long since I've posted here. My work blocked the forums and it's too annoying on my phone, so I just don't spend as much time here as I once did. It's probably for the best anyhow! We're trucking right along - making some lifestyle moves and not pushing as hard towards RE as we used to. These days quality of life is the goal and if that means spending money - we do it. But we built a pretty good foundation back in the day when we started here, and now despite our pitiful savings rates, the stash continues to work.

It's great to see the progress that you are all making - very impressive and I'm excited to continue to follow along.

That's a tough place to be. Figure out worst case scenario and see if its really that big of a deal? That's what I've been doing. Turns out my 'worst case' is pretty tame, as far as losing income is concerned. having a very firm grasp on the effectiveness of your safety net (emergency fund, future job prospects, etc.) makes it a lot easier to invest in chaotic/uncertain times.

FU money, and all that.

@footwear I believe contributions to a Roth IRA are always withdraw-able, tax and penalty free*. I don't know if a Roth is part of your strategy, but knowing you could get your hands on those funds might help you formulate your financial plan for the future. (*Please verify this before your commit to anything.)

@rockstache good to hear an update from you. I do feel, in a strange way, less urgency about getting to RE now, much closer to "the number". Can understand with your family situation (changes and events) that the money stuff would take a back seat to other concerns, especially with the progress you've already made. I think of you every time I update here and hope you and your family are well.

Wow @One Day 2023 was a great increase year for you, congrats! Thanks for your kind words. The family is great, and we are just busy doing the boring things that people with small kids do. I hope you are well also, I think of you often and miss our times at CMC. If you go this year, eat a falafel in my honor! :D

The markets giveth :)

Seriously, it's really starting to be obvious the power of compounding now that the stash is so large (plus the current generally upward trend). In the last 12 months, market returns were 75% of the NW increase. I'm not at the point where my contributions don't make much of a dent, but will be relatively soon. In the earlier part of the journey (like where you are) it's much more about what you yourself can contribute.

So I definitely went MIA in this thread last year. With the downturn in stocks I was a little lazier in tracking. But I have recently updated my numbers, and updated to a higher annual expense value (60k instead of 50k). Still using 4% SWR as the 60k is conservative based on the last few years of expenses. Another update - I am no longer using total net worth, but just investments. That explains why the percentages have gone down a bit.

November20.4%33.4%37.3%-

My goal for the end of the year is 50%. Lets hope the markets are kinder this year than last!

Expecting to hit 100% in April 2029. 6 years to go

Looks like I went MIA again for 2023 haha. Here are the updated numbers:

Much better year than 2022! Increase from 36.1% FI to 58.6% FI, or 22.5%! Beat my goal of 50% last year, my new goal for end of this year is 72%. Now predicting to hit 100% in December 2027.

Update for me as of end of 1Q:  94.2%

Feels good to have a 9-handle, but need to keep in mind this number will likely get impacted negatively by the home downsize / mortgage elimination in the next year.  We will see where things go!   But its been a great first quarter!   Wishing everyone success in their journeys!!

2023 Q4 Update
2015: (August) 16.3%
2015: (end) 20.06%
2016: 13.15% (ah the difference of a mortgage)
2017: 14.4%
2018: 18.6%
2019: 23.9%
2020: 46.0% (sold rental)
2021 Q1: 52.8%
2021 Q2: 55.5%
2021 Q3: 56.7%
2021 Q4: 56.8%
2022 Q1: 50.8%
2022 Q2: 46.1%
2022 Q3: 43.2%
2022 Q4: 47.0%
2023 Q1: 51.0%
2023 Q2: 55.6%
2023 Q3: 58.1%
2023 Q4: 66.9%
2024 Q1: 61.7%

With investable assets growing 13.5%, and 12-month trailing expenses down to $60.4k, we're making great progress this quarter!

This was a good quarter for investment growth, but we spent a bunch on buying a house (as well as preparing the old house for sale), and increased our 12-month trailing expense total to almost $65k. The new larger, higher interest mortgage will definitely make things worse for us over the next 12 months. We list our old house for sale in about 2 weeks. Selling that will help by reducing debt significantly, increasing investment accounts, and removing an overlap of mortgage interest, tax, insurance, and utilities.

I was probably at 40-50% in 2023.  I had a job change and went from LCOL location to and HCOL.  The pay was a huge increase, but so was the housing.  I am at 35% now adjusting my number up.  I will work to make it to that HCOL FIRE number, but will likely leave for LCOL when I am there.  We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Just dipping a toe in here, as it seems like FI is actually in sight for us! Thanks to an end to daycare and some fortunate house and job changes, we're finally able to add upwards of 10% per year rather than single digits. That puts us on track for 2030 or better!!!

This includes investments only, not our primary residence. Calculating for basic FI.
