Update for end of 2021. Making progress!

201920202021

February12%24%37%
March12%21%39%

August16%30%47%
September     16%29%46%
October17%30%49%
November18%33%50%
December22%35%52%

YoY increase of over 17% for 2021! Estimating we hit 100% in August of 2025 (based on a linear curve fit). I will be doing a deeper dive into expected expenses in retirement as well as the SWR we want to use. Right now we are using 4%, but thinking of reducing it to 3.5%. What do you all use for your SWR?

So I definitely went MIA in this thread last year. With the downturn in stocks I was a little lazier in tracking. But I have recently updated my numbers, and updated to a higher annual expense value (60k instead of 50k). Still using 4% SWR as the 60k is conservative based on the last few years of expenses. Another update - I am no longer using total net worth, but just investments. That explains why the percentages have gone down a bit.

2020202120222023
January12.8%23.2%33.6%40.1%
February13.1%23.6%33.6%40.7%

October17.8%32.5%34.3%-
November20.4%33.4%37.3%-
December20.5%35.0%36.1%-

My goal for the end of the year is 50%. Lets hope the markets are kinder this year than last!

Expecting to hit 100% in April 2029. 6 years to go

March:40.62%52.34%34.02%

Update:
Saving and investing was way, way down in March as I took all my extra money and put it into a couple of vacations we'll be taking later this year. As I head closer to FI (more than half way to my minimum number!), I find myself valuing time off more and more. Anyway, I make more than enough money to make up for it and due to some aggressive tax planning last year, I ended up with a tax refund that covered a lot of what I needed to hit my savings goals for the vacation.

I can't remember if I talked about it in this thread or not, but we've decided that with some of the changes in our lives in the last few years, we want a larger cash cushion than we've been carrying. Working on building that up is taking some away from investments right now, so we're at the whim of the market a bit.

2023 Q1 Update

2015: (August) 16.3%
2015: (end) 20.06%
2016: 13.15% (ah the difference of a mortgage)
2017: 14.4%
2018: 18.6%
2019: 23.9%
2020: 46.0% (sold rental)
2021 Q1: 52.8%
2021 Q2: 55.5%
2021 Q3: 56.7%
2021 Q4: 56.8%
2022 Q1: 50.8%
2022 Q2: 43.2% -> 46.1% (changed to remove pet costs which will not be in our future)
2022 Q3: 43.2%
2022 Q4: 47.0%
2023 Q1: 51.0%

So much harder to share these things when it's not going great... but (for now) we're past an ugly dip and recovering. Expenses have been higher more consistently, so that's the real battle.

March:40.62%52.34%34.02%
April:42.77%53.46%34.75%

Update:
Slow month, but was expected. had a bigger purchase that cut into my funds and another relatively flat market month. We have been stuck at VTI ~205 for awhile now and I'm looking forward to the market moving beyond that. My ideal would be back up to $230-250 by the end of the year, but no one can predict the future.

I'm not happy with my overall progress, but I am extremely happy with my contributions. I am contributing exactly what I need to be in order to hit my larger goals, I just don't know when/if the market will pick up to a level that I'll see meaningful returns. Also no looking forward to 2024 being an election year....that's going to mess things up for sure.

That said, I'm up 2% from where I was in January and I expect my contributions to continue to grow dramatically throughout the year. So, if nothing else, I am teeing up my future self for significantly more aggressive growth.

Finally hit 12%, was hovering just below since basically the beginning of the year

Well, back down to 11% flat with the market drop, but I own more shares.

Back up to 12%

Crossed over 13% on Thursday, and sitting at 13.3% now.

Just hit 14%

15%!

@JAYSLOL , 15% is great news!

I think that there are two really important points to get to on the FIRE journey.

The first is to get to a point where the payments and accruing interest on any outstanding debt is not a major obstacle to increasing one's net worth.  That means that gains aren't having to fight so hard to overcome debts and real progress towards FI can start to be made.

The second is to get to the 10-15 FI %.   A passive income of 10-15% allows one to much more easily overcome several major financial expenses or a short term loss of income.    Getting a car or HVAC or roof repair from "financial disaster!" to "damn, what a nuisance!" is a really positive life change.  It really cuts down the stress.

Congrats!

New to this thread, but its an interesting idea....so I went back and tried to reverse engineer my history to look at it through this lens.  And I, like @oneday have a divorce in the past that really set me back.

Here's my estimate -- subject to some refinement (all years represent June 30 -- closest quarter end to my birthday, so that's my "fiscal year"):

2015:  17.3%
2016:  25.9%
2017:  30.7%
2018:  31.1%  down payment on new home purchase, I exclude home equity from my calcs
2019:  47.1%  money back from sale of former home
2020:  51.4%
2021:  72.7%
2022:  67.1%

What stands out to me is 2021, just an incredible year....and in 2022 it caught up with me a bit.

With the rainy morning here in the Ohio, I updated - coming in at ~74% right now; upcoming equity vest and hopeful portfolio gains has me shooting for 77-78% by June 30.

Haha! It's the benefit of having a smaller "number".

To be fair, I may need to adjust my number up after this year and last. They seemed to be particularly spendy.

Yay, a good quarter. Still not our highest point yet... pandemic spending was low, while the markets were exuberant. We have lower trailing 12 month expenses than our peak, and we've hit a new high in invested assets.

@alcon835 , you are doing very well in my opinion.  Keep in mind, the nice part about this approach to tracking is that, once you cross over a certain point (50%?), you are kind of pushing downhill, as the market is doing much of the work for you.  So -- hang in there!!  I feel like getting through this stretch is crucial.   And the reality is your % completion is up by about 40% since 2021, which is quite an achievement in this market!!   You're on the right path!

I'm in! I stumbled into MMM about 9 years ago with a $3000 net worth and a ton of student/credit card/and auto debt. My percentage will not include the house, although at since point we're going to sell and move to a LCOL area and that will provide quite a jump when we free up some equity and/or eliminate the mortgage.  I'll add some historical data in one of my update posts in future months.

For now:
9/1/2023 - 38.3%

Update:
Missed updating for July, but I'm all caught up now. I appreciate the encouragement from this forum, y'all are very nice and I recognize my complaints are from a position of insane privilege. The difficult part for me with this year is I expected to be where I'm at today in December of 2022. 9 months behind is quite a bit behind in the world of compounding. Not a tragedy or anything, but my expectation was to make a few significant jumps towards my goals starting in 2022. The market had other plans and while I am still doing extremely well, I am also behind where I hoped to be by quite a bit.

That said, it still feels good to finally hit last year's goal. That's a significant accomplishment considering where I started at in 2018. This year's goal is likely impossible for me to hit at this point, but I'm overall with the progress I've made. If I can make some bigger gains next year I might even be able to hit my Lean Fire goal by 2025. We'll see!

@alcon835 truly, I can understand your frustration! I've just been in that place myself and as cushy as it is, not getting to the next milestone is demoralizing and frustrating. Maybe more so because the bulk of the control of that is up to "the universe" and what the market does, especially as one's stash reaches the higher value ranges.

One of the thoughts that helped to get me through was "buying stocks on sale". Not only do I love a bargain, but the longer-term implication is that the larger number of shares purchased now will help the value of the stash come roaring back & even reaching new highs in a shorter time frame when the market recovers. Maybe you can find some value in this thought too.

Ha didn't even catch the 58.1%! I think so. To be sure, it doesn't include some big expenses as we prepare to sell the house. But those won't repeat... (Of course there will be new "one off" expenses with moving and afterwards.) But yes I think largely our ongoing spending is at a reasonable sustainable place.

2015:  17.3%
2016:  25.9%
2017:  30.7%
2018:  31.1%
2019:  47.1%
2020:  51.4%
2021:  72.7%
2022:  67.1%
2023:  79.7%

Would really have loved for that last update to have started with an 8, but I'll take it for sure!

The first qtr update has me moving backwards at ~76%.  Feels like treading water right now while we're waiting for the next wave -- but it is (hopefully) coming!

Finally hit 12%, was hovering just below since basically the beginning of the year

Well, back down to 11% flat with the market drop, but I own more shares.

Back up to 12%

Crossed over 13% on Thursday, and sitting at 13.3% now.

Just hit 14%

15%!

Now 17%

You're doing great!     The 10% to 20% FI income threshold is so important!  It lets you pretty easily shrug off major expenses instead of, like many people, having them be disasters.   Might not make big progress on your FI % in a bad year, but you're still sitting pretty on a pile of assets at the end of it, and that's piece of mind!

Update:
Back positive again. November was a surprisingly positive month in the market. I honestly don't know what is swaying things. YTD my Net Worth has increased by 25%, from where I was on January 1st and it's put me ~11% closer to my FIRE/Net Worth goals. I am only 4.24% away from where I wanted to get too this year, so it's a real possibility. However, December is always an expensive month and I have no idea what the markets are going to do. Still, it's actually an attainable goal and that has me excited to see where I end up on 12/31.

That's a big deal. I haven't had a ton to be excited for this year, financially. Fingers crossed I can make it to the finish line!
