I haven't updated in quite a while and I hit my interim milestone of having $1M in assets. I hit that consistently in March. My next goal is to hit it in NW and then to hit it in investments only. Hoping everyone is moving along nicely towards their goals too.

so I learned about some random "pension" thingy that my employer maintains for me with another $20,000 in it. This covers about 1/3 of the remaining distance for me, but I'm starting to ask myself questions like: "Who do I tell when I get to $1 million?"

I don't want to brag, or make myself a target.

I also don't want to make my wife feel like she can just spend massive amounts of money.

I'm glad I have you guys!

End of 2007: $71,000
End of 2008: $87,600
End of 2009: $202,000
End of 2010: $257,000
2011: $298,000
2012: $364,000
2013: $371,000
2014: $615,000 (This looks like a big jump from 2013 because I started counting in my calculations an investment account which hadn't been counted in prior years)
2015: $644,000
2016: $740,000

Mid year update puts me at $813,000, not including equity in primary residence or rental property. The kind of returns in the current market keep making me think maybe we could actually retire early. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop (when I will stay the course and be glad to buy equities on sale :-) ).

We're in this race on the way to our $1.5M goal!  Below are investment accounts only (brokerage, IRAs, 401Ks) as we don't have a house and want what cash we have to be over and above our goal.

Feb-2016:  $506K
Jun-2016:  $554K

I'm very glad to say I'm joining this thread. Look forward to the challenge. Great to join recent grads ClarkFan, YellowCat, OurTown, and BBub.

July-17     $496,327.00
Aug-17     $508,958.72 (+12,631)

I use Housing Equity in my NW calculation, and I'll be posting quarterly to keep my sanity.

It took 19 months to complete the last thread, with average gains of about $13,200 per month.  My geektastic spreadsheet projections suggest I can finish this next race in 36 months. I guess we will have to see about that.

Welcome aboard OurTown, Jersey Mark, and JustGettingStarted!

My update:
                 Invested/Total NW
5/1/17 --    $631k     $943k
6/1/17 --    $647k     $969k
7/1/17 --    $655k     $978k
8/1/17 --    $665k     $992k

I include house equity (using Zillow estimate) but not emergency fund or 529 savings in total NW.  Getting close!

My NW is at $662K.  Not sure I will ever hit $1M, but it's nice to think about!  I'm aiming for $800K when I retire in June 2018.

Now up to $709,418.  :)

I'm now at $745,282.  Onward and upward.

3/1- $846,602 in investments, cash and HSA
6/30- $899,143 in investments, cash and HSA (I am not including our emergency fund, kids 529s or home equity)

That's great improvement in a few months time!

7/31- $919,061 investments, cash and HSA
BUT- I know I said I wasn't including home equity as we are not planning to sell to FIRE, but if I DO include it for fun we are conservatively at a NW of $1,003,171!!!

Thanks guys. It's getting sort of surreal. We'll likely hit $1M in investment assets sometime this school year. Which isn't enough for us to truly FIRE on with a family of four and healthcare being what it is, but it opens up a lot of other possibilities. Our youngest will start kindergarten fall of 2018 so we won't have ridiculous day care costs. I could actually start freelancing, contract work, or just working part time to cover tuition and travel. And then in a few more years DH could follow. It's just crazy to think that. And we're not even really mustachian. Or particularly high earners. Just two Midwesterners who have avoided lifestyle inflation and used a budget.
To quote someone else on the forum, "this shit works".

4/2017 - 524,000
5/2017 - 537,500
6/2017 - 560,500 : sold a car and other things; getting ready for FIRE
7/2017 - 578,337 : updated pension amount for OMM (one-more month)

8/2017 - 598,569 : updated pension amount for 2 more weeks

All numbers are investments; no house at the moment.

Everything is very crazy actually.  After FIRE, we have a short trip planned to Maui then going to move away from here to Dallas, TX and get settled.  So many more plans coming up with many huge changes coming.  I think I need to start a journal on the forums.

Joining this group at ~$567k invested as of 7/31/2017.

This doesn't include cash/emergency fund, home equity, or the present value of my vested, but frozen, pension at work.

6/25/2017 – $410,407 invested + $243,090 house equity = $653,497
7/25/2017 - $416,852 invested + $213,063 home equity = $629,915 – not sure why Zillow said my home value went down? Oh well, we aren’t selling it this month anyway :)

On the home equity question, I do include it b/c the paid-for house will be part of my FIRE calculation.  I use the "Zestimate" but I don't track the fmv monthly because the volatility of Zillow fucks up my trend line.  I will adjust the fmv from Zestimate about once a year; that should capture any significant changes in fmv.  I do track the home equity monthly so payments on principal do show up in the new worth trend line.  FWIW I am in year four of a fifteen year mortgage, I am not paying down early until after I reach my magic number in invested assets.  Then the plan is to continue working one or two more years and pay off the remaining balance.

I know!  Yes, the market is way up, but it really is surreal how fast the 'stache can grow once it gets big.  I haven't looked at the $1M - $2M thread, but there must be some really staggering gains there.

Estimates of NW over the years with more concrete values currently
2011: $40k  Real estate sucked (I'm a realtor and own rentals), income was low and equity was non existent.  Tough times!
2012: $55k
2013: $75k
2014: $160k  Being a realtor and also having a large portion of NW in real estate helped income and value go up drastically. (income $155k) plus asset appreciation
2015: $295k  (income $210k) plus asset appreciation
2016: $505k (income $242k) plus asset appreciation
Started using Mint for tracking in 2017
2017: March $515
         April $500 spent money... :(
         May $521
         June $573
         July $588

Onward and upward.  Only discovered MMM this year.  Good luck to all!

Aug 2017: $605k

Jul-2017:  $722K (+$16K)

Only about $5K of that was what we (and our company matches) added to our accounts!
We really are starting to see our money make money for us!

Officially joining this thread! As of August 1, we have about $200k in retirement, $200k (very conservative estimate, probably closer to $300k) in home equity, and $100k in other investments.

I can't wait for that next comma!

Better late to the game than never!

At $834k liquid ($916k NW) as of the start of August. Stopped doing net worth posts on the blog a couple years ago but kind of miss the accountability and external motivation, so excited to check in here!

Joining the club. Currently about 720k investible, 200k owed on mortgage, about 250k home equity. Not sure when/if I'll get to 1m; may semi-FIRE before then.
Updated numbers: 894k investible, 183k owed on mortgage, about 313k home equity. If the market were to stay flat, would probably hit 1m investible around 6 months from now.

Our gains are so substantial we don't even communicate anymore.   We bundle our money under our pillows and just nap.  I don't even have a clue really.  I'm gaining ground at better than $500 a day.  1.75M currently in most Index 500 and Total Stock Index.  House and everything else is paid off.  It's worth something.   You don't worry about home equity so much on the next threads.  I cheat and include the house to post in the 2M to 3M thread.

In hindsight in this bull market it has cost me quite a bit IMO without crunching the exact numbers.  However it has been paid off since Jan  and I am holding the value steady in my networth calcs because I don't trust the automated estimation.  Additionally it had been a big part of getting the wife on board with the mmm mindset, so not a total loss.

Quest complete! I think I've made it to 1,007,000. If I put up the value of my properties to fair market value I'm probably somewhere around $1,150,000 but I really don't believe the local hype on real estate.

Honestly though I don't feel much different which is a shame. Still too much in home and post retirement accounts. Not enough investments that I could actually use between now and 65.

Having said that I can upsize the goal to something larger now. That can only be a good thing.

does australia not have ways to access this money early like we have in the states.  you'd have to think there is some loop hole.

Early access to super is tightly managed (for good reason). You can be granted early access if you can demonstrate hardship (illness, bank repossessing your house), but there are still penalties.

Also, I'm 99 per cent sure Marty doesn't want early access to super. If he was concerned about having too much money locked up in it, he wouldn't be salary sacrificing.

Have you taken the time to calculate how much that much home equity has cost you ?
In hindsight in this bull market it has cost me quite a bit IMO without crunching the exact numbers.  However it has been paid off since Jan  and I am holding the value steady in my networth calcs because I don't trust the automated estimation.  Additionally it had been a big part of getting the wife on board with the mmm mindset, so not a total loss.

My wife raised the issue of finances with me yesterday (I think we're currently about 5% shy of the goal on this thread). I'm still searching for ways to try to express the Mustachian values to her.

husband's 401k has not done real well this past month. Mine has been mediocre. Property value is up, again.

I'm suddenly wondering if I haven't already passed. There are a couple of little accounts (like a Health savings account) I haven't been tracking in my wealth accounting, but $15,000 here, $15,000 there, and pretty soon we're talking about serious $$$.

Thought I would join in on the fun, and looked back through my spreadsheets to see when I became eligible for this group.  My progress is not quite as impressive as some but on the bright side it still has me on track for my goal.  I have not included home equity, college savings, or a few other accounts like emergency savings and HSA (only just started maxing this out to try and get to my goal quicker).  These are just my tax-deferred accounts.

As I mentioned, I have been crunching numbers lately to try and expedite my FIRE goal and plan to begin stashing some more money in my taxable account or try to clean up some old tIRAs to do a backdoor Roth.  The taxable account is another one I have not currently included above as it has a few stocks from before I became a steadfast indexer.

Alright I'm in for the accountability.

Family of 4, avg cost of living area. Hope to retire or scale back in 3.5 years (or sooner).

I like the format where home equity is separate.

Liquid / Total
1/1/17 - 472k / 833k
2/1/17 - 474k / 843k
3/1/17 - 494k / 864k
4/1/17 - 508k / 875k
5/1/17 - 523k / 893k
6/1/17 - 547k / 915k
7/1/17 - 553k / 923k
8/1/17 - 571k / 933k

9/1/17 - 587k / 952k
Good month, holding steady but have some medical bills coming due that might hold down next month a little.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
