JANUARY UPDATE

08/01/20: $253,789
09/01/20: $257,810
10/01/20: $256,193
11/01/20: $255,810

01/01/21: $276,958
02/01/21: $286,621

Great start to 2021. Had above average contributions this month. Debating whether to cash out some employee shares to maximize contributions in my RRSP.. I know that would be the smartest move, but enjoy the flexibility of having some money in a unregistered account.

I think I was briefly above $400k in late January. I'd like to hit $500k mid-2022.

Hi all!

Making the jump up from the 100K to 250K thread.

I've broken out the numbers into individual and joint (with DW) net worth. We do not own a house (yet), so numbers reflect cash/equivalents and retirement accounts. Our only debt is whatever is currently on our credit cards, which gets paid off each month. Below are our numbers, dating back to when we first joined the last thread. Initially it was my own journey, but at this stage in my marriage it made sense to report the joint numbers which I had already been tracking.

                  Solo NW      Joint NW
4/30/2020 -       101,897        203,198
5/31/2020 -       109,544        218,023
6/30/2020 -       114,288        227,585
7/31/2020 -       117,338        236,196
8/31/2020 -       128,213        251,254
9/30/2020 -       125,543        246,779
10/31/2020 -     130,200        251,727
11/30/2020 -     141,260        266,097
12/31/2020 -     147,153        271,221
1/31/2020 -    155,099       282,090

January wound up being a two-paycheck month which helped juice my numbers a bit. Conversely, I had a significant car-repair bill which made made spending seem way worse than it actually was. Thankfully our stimulus money took care of around 60% of the total bill, so that was nice.

Another good month. I just started putting numbers into my tax software and it looks like our 2020 income tax would have been enough to cover our entire year's expenses with room to spare. I don't know whether to be dismayed at the amount of tax or thrilled at the amount of saving...

I noticed the same thing - probably happened in 2019 too I just didn’t notice. Tax liability is greater than total spend. Bittersweet, like you said. Celebrate the high savings rate I suppose. Saved 3x total spend last year, 4x if you include capital gains.

Mar. 2019   $258,467

Dec. 2020  $444,558
Jan. 2021  $459,349
Feb. 2021  $475,145

Had been expecting to graduate from this thread sometime this coming summer, but it seems that it may be sooner. And I have about $30k in federal student loans that will be forgiven in June.

Started MMM in Jan. 2017 with a NW of $42k and was (literally) envisioning not retiring for about thirty years. Now I'm seriously contemplating retiring in 2 years. Holy cow!! :-)

Today I calculated the number of years it would take to deplete my portfolio.

Basically assume my portfolio grows at 7% and I deduct my expenses at the beginning of each year until empty.

Was surprised with 9.9x savings I have almost 15 years of expenses saved!

By the end of the year I should be around 12.5x which would last for 25 years!

In about 21 months I will hit 15.4x expenses and my portfolio will begin to outpace my spending.

Only regret (and a whatever regret at that) is not buying GME when I said I was going to(around $5).    Probably would have sold before the fun times but...  Oh well.  Can't cry over nothing lost.  Off to the next big think...  which is... idk and idc.  I'm doing just fine without the guessing game.

If I look at cash and securities only (not counting rental equity or primary residence equity) I belong on this thread

1/2016  $137K
1/2017  $154K
9/2017  $244K  (cash out refinance of primary residence)
3/2018   $208K  includes 0% credit card debt.
6/2018  $213K    ditto but without 0% CC balance and including pension balance, $328K.
12/2018   $250K   ditto but without 0% CC balance and including pension balance, $353K
12/2019  $328K  but without 0% CC balance and including pension balance, $425K
6/2020  $343K, but without 0% CC balance and including pension balance. $448K

cash out refi for one of our rentals

12/2020  $428K but without 0% CC balance and including pension balance. $530K  yay!  even with 0% CC balance we're over $500K!

Projection to be fully over $500K in liquid investments in early 2022, perhaps sooner.

Well, sooner it is! Fully over $500K for the first time in Feb 2021!
All because of a single stock in my Roth IRA that's been going nuts. It's PACB Pacific Biosciences has given me over 10X return in the past year. I'm one of their happy customers.

2/10/21  $502K  including 0%CC balance, which should be paid off this year. After that and including pension balance, $606K

Tentatively graduating from this thread. Might be back, but wa-hoo!!

So I quit my job this month to work on some projects. I have another job lined up for the summer, but decided to focus on my own stuff for a bit. I guess this is a teaser for retirement? Anyway, some gains this month, but likely some drops incoming for the next few months, until the summer.

08/20/2020   $265,573.65
01/07/2021   $395,308.26

02/19/2021  $506,987.60

This happened a lot faster than I anticipated.  I've been very fortunate in that: (1) my costs have gone down, (2) income has gone up (well returned to pre-COVID and received backpay), (3) stock market has been great, (4) a small cryptocurrency portfolio has done very well, and (5) my modest collection of sealed out-of-print Pokemon TCG booster boxes has turned out to be THE investment of 2020-21.  Pretty crazy.

Long time lurker, first time posting - figured it may be helpful to push ourselves by joining this race.

1/1/21 - $400,149
2/14/21 - $427,486 (+$27,337)

Aiming to hit $500,000 by October - hoping at the current rate (and some anticipated bonuses) it should be possible!

First number is retirement savings & other long term investments, second is total NW including cash savings and real estate equity. I'm focused on retirement only for this challenge rather than total NW.

December 2019: $292,062 (total NW $423,991)
December 2020: $398,408 (total NW $572,704)
January 2021: $413,029 (total NW $584,337)
February 2021: $420,000 (total NW $593,792)

Forgot to post in January, so this is a two-month update for me.  Got lucky with play money in Gamestop, but I'll take it! I pulled the profits and put it into a more reasonable VTSAX fund, so this year's off to a good start

Back already,

2/28/21  $487K

should only be another month or two until over 500K sticks.
