Hello quarter millionaires!

I'm not in this race (yet) - question: how much do you usually save every month? I look at some of your numbers, and see they jumping 8k-10k mo, and is a little discouraging (I cannot save that much). Just wondering how much is savings vs market returns...

Mar-18   $249550-INV  $381297 - NW ---> fell below 250K, what a rollercoaster this year has been!
Apr-18   $252,693 - INV $385,040 - NW
May-18  $263,950 - INV $396,500 - NW
June-18 $268,500 - INV $401,900 - NW ---> hope markets stay low for a while.
July-18  $279,100 - INV $414,336 - NW
Aug-18 $291293 - INV $ 376293 - NW ---> Writing off 51k, we are spending on our family home for mom and dad, Property is mine, but highly illiquid for foreseeable future. Maybe next 40 years.
Sep-18 $292395 - INV $377395 - NW---> Lots of unexpected expenses this month. My job is also not on firm ground. Bad new manager situation. Starting new job search.Anyone have job for me :)
Oct-18  $271500 - INV $357200 - NW ---> Yay volatility
Nov-18 $279200 - INV $365200 - NW ---> Big spending month, over $10000 unexpected spending on Medical expenses, travel reservations, hotels, electronics, shopping deals and gifts. Also got new job, lateral move.
Dec-18 $257500 - INV $344000 - NW ---> Hope this market remains low or flat for next couple of months so I can plough more money in. Happy new year you all! It is interesting that the assets like primary home provide so much stability in rough times. If we have a paid off home or enough cash to pay it off safely invested it provides much safety in difficult times.
Jan-19 $290132 - INV $373300 - NW ---> Big bounce back. But I wish it came after Feb. Its likely there will be more opportunities due to various uncertainties in current short term.
Feb-19 $317800 - INV $406000 - NW ---> Big payday of the year helped cross 300k easily.
Mar-19 $323000 - INV $411500 - NW ---> Not much to say this month. we went on 2nd vacation of the year already and so associated expenses affected the growth.
Apr-19 $337600 - INV $426600 - NW  ---> Expensive month, we paid for family member's medical expenses. Tragic situation at young age. Makes a strong case for big emergency fund.
May-19 $326000 - INV $416000 - NW ---> Yay! Volatility. I was able to add few hundred $s more than usual to investments. @Epor Usually about $6000 a month in addition to savings currently, rest gains or losses in market. It motivates me to compare with high savers, that way I tend to push a little harder or keep consistent. Its a race alright!

I'm at about 4k/mo contributions as well.  The rest is market gains or loses and our portfolio is at 400k right now so the moves can be drastic.  Like dropping 20k in the last month.

Some months will be significantly higher contributions due to bonuses and company stock vesting but the month to month standard is contributing 4k for now.

It goes both ways, some folks here will certainly contribute more than you but others may have just been on the path for longer. I wouldn't compare yourself to others as the FIRE folks don't want to keep up with the Joneses. it's really the same thing, everyone has their own journey and trying to keep up with someone that is in different circumstances is just unhealthy and frankly unrealistic.

We average about $2300 in retirement contributions and $1000 in debt pay-down per month, so average +$3300 net worth/month, but still a couple percent downturn in the market is more than enough to wipe out all of our "progress" in a given month.

Jun 2018   $219,320
Jul 2018  $228,483
Aug 2018  $234,711
Sep 2018  $245,993
Oct 2018  $251,023
Nov 2018  $238,881
Dec 2018  $244,687
Jan 2019  $226,942

Apr 2019  $285,770
May 2019  $295,838
June 2019 $283,393

I am sensing a pattern here, where each time I am on the cusp of hitting a nice round number, I have to sit back and wait a very long time to actually hit it. I enjoyed this month's sale, but damn I was ready to celebrate $300k!!

I don't understand that @Nick_Miller ... We joined this thread about the same time, I contribute $5500 a month and yet you're now $40k ahead of me. Are you using housing appreciation per month too?

I mean, I calculate my net worth. All assets minus all liabilities.

So yes, cash, home equity, retirement accounts are all added together minus my remaining student loans. We don’t count the kids’ college funds as assets though.

Also I earned a very large bonus early in the year. It was a one-time thing for sure.

Spouse and I collectively contribute a bit over $4,000 into 403(b) accounts.  Then add the principal portion of the mortgage payment.  Plus we run a surplus every month with what’s left over.  And then the market helps most months (not so much the past few months obviously).

But yeah, it’s crazy how much your NW moves up when you have a nice savings and you’re making decent cash and diverting it to retirement accounts instead of buying stupid shit.

   Jan 1       $212,860
   Feb 1       $230,743

   May 1       $263,658
   June 1       $252,691           (-10,961)

Woof.. there go last months gains. I'm very excited about the sale here though as my RRSP contribution for the year ($26,500) goes into my account this week.

My contributions average out to around $6000 to $7000 a month for those wondering.

I don't count my house equity, so this is just investments minus loans (I invest instead of paying off my low interest loans).

Hello quarter millionaires!

I'm not in this race (yet) - question: how much do you usually save every month? I look at some of your numbers, and see they jumping 8k-10k mo, and is a little discouraging (I cannot save that much). Just wondering how much is savings vs market returns...

This year we’ve been saving around $13k-$15k/mo (single income). It should be noted, I’ve moved all over the country with the entire purpose of making as much money as possible and working as many hours as possible. I’ve lived in 8 states in the last 10 years, and am in my current state for the 3rd time. I also work as a W-2 Contractor, so while I do get fantastic benefits, I don’t have the job security of most typical full time employees. Right now I’m working 6 days per week. I could probably work 5, as my 6th day pay doesn’t actually add as much as I make M-F, all things considered, but it’s worth it for the time being.

I save between 1.5k and 2k per month, comparison is the thief of joy, so you do the best of you and be ok with that.

Decided to join this thread with my entire net worth (investments + HSA + home equity) in the race to $500k. The equity portion is my half, as are all of the investments. We do plan on selling the house when I retire (she is already retired) so i feel comfortable including that into the calculation.

Apr-14-2019: $304272.12 consisting of roughly $180k invested and $125k equity

Totally unsure when to project graduation from this thread but let's hope for $80k-$90k per year between growth and contributions so about 2.5 years with a stretch goal of April/May 2021.

Jun-12-2019: $315k consisting of roughly $190k invested and $125k equity.

May 2018 - 256
Aug 2018 - 272
Dec 2018 - 248
March 2019 - 282
June 2019 - 300

$1,016/month in automated savings (401K and HSA) in addition to mortgage. As our cash balance balloons we periodically make contributions to Roth's, 529's, etc.

I am a homeschooling mom of 4 married to a hard working husband.   We are including investments and houses but not 529s or HSA because we seem to need it often with 4 kids!  Can't wait to hit $500,000

1/19  $255,503
4/19  $304,217

Wow, what an inspiration! I'm a SAHM of a preschooler and toddler. It took us 15 months to cover that same ground. We just hit $300K this month which seems hard to believe. Hats off to you!

Gonna throw my hat into the ring on this thread. It's crazy to go back and see the progress over the years. I came out of grad school in 2010 with $90k in student debt, without a pot to piss in, earning $40k a year. Four years ago this month, I was celebrating a zero net worth after a long period of focusing on attacking the loans. At that time, I decided to refocus my efforts on saving and investing more and to not go as crazy on the loans. Just last week, my personal investment accounts crossed the $250k mark for the first time. And this week, I will be making my final student loan payment. It feels great!

It's a little surreal for me getting to this point. I'm in the camp where it has felt like a big deal. Both of these goals, paying off the student loans and hitting $250k in investments, have been on my mind for so long and now both have been achieved... at practically the same time. I do feel different-- "rich" in the sense that my financial anxieties already seemed to have lessened. I don't feel prisoner to any debt and I have confidence in my nest egg. Now, in my 34th year, my traditional retirement (e.g. 65+) is already taken care of and all efforts moving forward will continue to shave off the years until true financial independence. (Now I know everyone uses their own form of accounting; I'll be following based on my personal investments/retirement accounts--separate from the wife's).

Checking in about 15 months after hitting $250k. Just this week I eclipsed $312,500.00 for the first time. This was a cool number for me, because I love to extrapolate the growth potential of what has been already been amassed... In 10 years, it should be worth appx $625k; in 20 years, it should be $1.25m; and in 30 years, at age 65, it would grow to be worth $2.5m (inflation adjusted)! Although, there is no way I am working that long though. Lol. Will be drawing well before then, but the security feels really good... Okay, back to plodding along in the race. Good luck everyone!

Took less than 3 months after hitting $312.5k to reach 1/3 of a million. Surpassed $333,333.33 for the first time today. Hoping to keep the momentum rolling!

If this market doesn’t drop we’re looking at a gain of $40k this month thanks to nothing other than market gains and a typical month of work.

Joining this thread, having just hit 250 in investables. I feel far behind and am trying not to compare.  My husband is 100% not on board, so it was a lot of clawing and scratching to get this far.

Welcome to the thread, @Jadzia37000! And congrats on your successful clawing and scratching! We all move at our own pace, and we all have unique personal/financial situations, so I'd encourage you not to worry about comparisons too much! Congratulations for getting here!

And am I the only one who gets all giddy when it's time to run end-of-month net worth numbers? It's the first thing I'm doing when I get home.

Welcome Jadzia37000!

And am I the only one who gets all giddy when it's time to run end-of-month net worth numbers? It's the first thing I'm doing when I get home.

Whether its up or down, I get excited and cant wait to calculate it.

I was thinking about it, currently stock market is at similar peak where it was a year and half ago, Since Jan 2018. Makes me happy to be investing through those valleys.

Mar-18   $249550-INV  $381297 - NW ---> fell below 250K, what a rollercoaster this year has been!
Apr-18   $252,693 - INV $385,040 - NW
May-18  $263,950 - INV $396,500 - NW
June-18 $268,500 - INV $401,900 - NW ---> hope markets stay low for a while.
Oct-18  $271500 - INV $357200 - NW ---> Yay volatility
Feb-19 $317800 - INV $406000 - NW ---> Big payday of the year helped cross 300k easily.
Jun-19 $348000 - INV $439000 - NW ---> DW's pregnant with our second baby :), That means now I have to plan for big expenses.. Minivan, Medical expense and more. I am trying convince DW that we can put off buying minivan for another 2 years. Wish me luck!

Well done Jadzia37000!

me too! it's even more fun because now Transamerica doesn't work with mint since 6 months ago, I never have any idea where I am. I never follow any of the financial news, so it is always a surprise.

By the way- something is wrong with the chart on the 4th page..showing as negatives:
