New city, new job, newly single (so rent + utilities will be up a bunch).  Much higher income tax in Oregon, but the job comes with a big jump in salary.  I'm curious to see what my regular paycheck will look like once I get access to a 401k and matching in three months.  Happy to see the growth considering I wasn't working for half of the month.

Hello, just joining this thread from the race to $250k. Is there a Google spreadsheet for this thread?

Jul 2018     $250737.17

I looked hard for one when I started this thread, but couldn't find one.  I copied my numbers out of the old spreadsheet and have continued to track it (privately).

There is now that I know about one... https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AU7U1LTOW0D-_TiWUZJ7OSolSB_ULYQC2ZWSNW5hig0/edit?usp=sharing

Not hard to make one copying and updating the one from the 100-250k thread, just put your name in the data entry tab and start adding data :)

Thank you!!!

Hi guys! Just graduated over from the 100-250k thread - nice to see some of you folks here that graduated from that one :)

$395,000 as of today.  That's combined with my wife.  We'll see where things stand once the divorce is done and we have to split the assets.

Splitting the assets is bad, but being in an alimony state is even worse.  Future savings is lopped off with the stroke of a pen.  $3500 per month for the first couple of years, then $2600 per month for the next 3, then $1200 per month for a couple more years after that.  Which is gonna affect my savings rate pretty drastically.  Sucks.  Could be worse though.  CO law states I actually owe her $3500/month for 12 years.  The step downs are entirely a result of my spouse being reasonable about the $$.  CO is a great place to live, but not a great place to get divorced if you're a high earner and your spouse is not.

yeah - when it comes to divorce the law does not recognise early retirement. it assumes you will continue to earn full wages right through to at least 65. It may view early retirement as an excuse to get out of paying alimony / child support.
ask me how I know - actually don't. Prenup/divorce settlement conference is the way to go. do not end up in front of a judge and let them decide.

Helpful, thanks.  Hoping that prenup holds on no alimony, and that I can voluntarily lump sum him something to move things along (and also because it will make it easier for him to be a present father).

lump sum is always a good carrot to dangle. I did a small lump sum, paid for house and small but defined alimony. Basically she can use that and cover all of her household expense for the next 15 years.
I got to keep the 401k's which should increase in value much faster and cover the alimony. actually in the 9 onths since the settlement the increase already has covered the alimony.

Also my ex was very risk adverse so a paid for house was exactly the sort of thing she was happy with.  How risk adverse they are can play a factor in what you offer (and always start low).

We both came out of the settlement feeling hard done by so it was probably fair!

August 2017 - $295k
September 2017 - $310k
October 2017 - $314k
November 2017 - $319k
December 2017 - $328k
January 2018 - $336k
February 2018 - $331k
March 2018 - $341k
April 2018 - $345k
May 2018 - $353k
June 2018 - $376k
July 2018 - $379k

August 2018 - $379k

Same as last month,  which means I lost $2.25k this month.   Still feeling pretty good considered that I gained $84k this last year and the only saving I did was maxing my 401k and paying around 8k into home equity through regular mortgage payments.

Special mid-month update -- I sold my house!!

I also have an escrow balance of $706.30, which I think I will get back -- and I should have approximately $495 coming back from my homeowners' insurance policy.  I'm also ignoring cars -- I have three with a combined value of approximately $40k, one of which is pending sale for $9k. So, hopefully I'll have a $10k bump again soon!  Today is a good day :)

Someone else recommended I read through your old journal, so maybe I will ask you.  I'm 31 and have a 1 year old so things are different for me, but I suspect there may be some similarities. ETA: Actually I turned 32 and forgot.  I'm 32, ha.

@JLee As an optimist, I'd like to think that your latest "debt" figure should be a Positive Zero ;)

Congrats on the house sale and no debt!

LOL, I actually had it as a positive zero and then it was offset from all the other numbers in the column and it bothered me! I bet I can fix it with a space, though. I'm going to try that!

Hello!  I graduated into this thread a few months ago but neglected actually joining it.  So a recap of the last few months:

May 1 2018:  $250,453.08
June 1 2018:  $256,005.82
July 1 2018:  $259,624.40
August 1 2018:  $268,077.64  we both had an extra paycheck in June, which really upped what happened for the August 1 number

There was some discussion early in the thread of doing 250 to 500 as fast as you did 100 to 250.  For me, that would be 31 months, or November 2020.  NOT HAPPENING.  Nope, no way.  I'll be happy if it only takes 50 months, or June 2021.  We're looking to have kids in the next few years and our savings above the basic E-fund and 10% to retirement will be eaten by daycare.  Plus, our savings largely go into savings - a little over half of our net worth is in investments, the rest is cash savings/checking/cars and *saving for a farm*.  Farms aren't know for their steady 10% annual return.  So the net worth build will be slow.  It'll be interesting to see how this journey goes.  We aren't on the RE journey, so there's less motivation to hit a particular number and drive us forward.

With your ~50% equities path it should take roughly $7k/month of savings to reach the goal in 31 months. Assuming 6% return from the stock market and 1.75% return from the remaining portion of your stash. The 50 month time frame will require about $3,700/month, same assumptions.

Hello!  I graduated into this thread a few months ago but neglected actually joining it.  So a recap of the last few months:

May 1 2018:  $250,453.08
June 1 2018:  $256,005.82
July 1 2018:  $259,624.40

Thanks for the info!  2 things - we'll buy a farm with the cash within the next 31 - 50 months, and I'll only have that appreciate in our budget by 1% a year (farmland is tricky to value, so I'm keeping my assumptions low and safe).  Then we'll be paying a loan with a bunch of interest on it for the farm...so that'll slow us down.  Thing 2 - umm, we don't even bring home $7k a month after taxes hahahahahaha.  We don't save much before taxes, just my SIMPLE IRA for the employer match, my husband doesn't have a work retirement account.  Due to the farm, generally the plan is to be making way too much money someday, so we save into Roths now.  The $3,700 a month is closer to realism, but probably still more than we'll manage in that time.  This is interesting data to have though, thanks for sharing.

No problem. It's fun running numbers. There's a lot of variability in the assumptions. If you assume 100% equities and 10% annual return it would take 36 months at $4k/month.

well.
Hi there.
I left you guys some time ago when i moved up to the next thread.

then got divorced! Its not good for the net worth.

sooooo here we go again

nov-17 (settlement day for the divorce).
$300K
May-18
$375K

its heading the right way.

that divorce shit is expensive. costs more than money too!!

Nov-17 - 300k
May-18  - 375k
July -18 - 400k

woot! that the net figure. my liquid is higher and the situation is complicated due to the divorce. I'm happy with the rate of increase though.

Nov-17 - 300k
May-18  - 375k
July -18 - 400k
aug-18 - 410k

seems to be a steady 10k plus a month - on average. I'm ok with that. My investemnts have nearly broken 1/2 mill now. just have some debt to sort out related to the divorce and a stead acceleration to FIRE is the path.
if I can continue at the present rate then clearing 1/2m net should be mid 2019.
crazy how the compounding works.

my ex is risk adverse. she has a paid off house and some retirement accounts.
I got the 401k's and debt that is at a fixed rate. I'm pretty damn certain that the leverage I'm able to apply has helped me a lot. even though I'm paying out debt, alimony and child support the increase in investments plus what I'm able to stick in my 401k is helping me advance to fire way ahead of her. There will be some pleasure in seeing her working while I'm fired (and still paying alimony!).

Big month with an annual bonus on one W-2 check, an annual raise kicking in on the other W-2, and a few side hustle checks. Combined with a low month of expenses, our savings rate was over 70% this month!

Asset allocation is a little heavy on cash with an upcoming home renovation in the works. Otherwise, I'm continuing to build up the balance in our brokerage account while I research rental property options.

Stretching to hit $300k by January 1.

Still investments only. Nothing special this month on the savings front; just the normal automatic investments. Investments just kept churning.

Forgot to jump to this thread when I passed the $250k mark so will do now. Had a really good last year and starting to feel that snowball play a factor. My goal is to be over $500k within 2 years. I'm confident I can do it before that but I also have some household and educational expenses that will challenge me to get there. So August 1, 2020 = a half millionaire! Let's go!

August 1, 2018 - $393,286
Broke the $400k mark in NW!  I was reviewing my spreadsheets and it absolutely blows me away that I was sitting with a negative net worth 4.5 years ago! No hand outs, just an eye opening read of MMM and some serious hard work and conscious decisions.

June 1, 2018 - $385,931
July 1, 2018 - $389,444
August 1, 2018 - $393,286
September 1, 2018 - $406,838       + $13,552 m/m

Bigger jump than normal for me as I got my annual pension update and found out I was under reporting for last year in my spreadsheets. Also had a bit of a raise Aug 1.

Not quite the first but the banks aren't open tomorrow anyway. Company stock is at at all-time high, so I liquidated a bunch of the RSUs I've been granted over the years to dump into VTSAX. Historically a large enough portion of my portfolio to be worried about, but it's jumped up enough recently that I was feeling a little overweight with all (or a big chunk) of my eggs in the one basket.

Mar 1, 2018 - $225,651
Apr 1, 2018 - $238,764
May 1, 2018 -$251,725

July 1, 2018 - $272,423
Aug 1, 2018 - $277,896
Sep 1, 2018 - $298,543

My only saving grace this month was that it was a three paycheck month and a bit of a stock market bump. I spent $1100 on AC repair, $1400 on medical, and a $1000 on a gift for my parents.

Regardless - very happy where my numbers still ended up, just need to get my spending under control.

2/1/2017:  $183,768
3/1/2017:  $197,020
4/1/2017:  $202,363
5/1/2017:  $223,229
6/1/2017:  $244,355
7/1/2017:  $249,532
graduated to this thread!
8/1/2017:  $262,500
9/1/2017:  $270,766
10/1/2017:  $287,535
11/1/2017:  $302,991
12/1/2017:  $303,901
1/1/2018:  $292,875
9/1/2018:  $374,869

It's been a while since I updated.  We somewhat fell off the MMM wagon this year.  Restaurant meals/carryout has always been our weakness and it seems we can't avoid the $30 or $50 pointless purchases.  Also our investments performed poorly for most of the year.  Add that all up and it was too depressing to continue tracking NW.

Well in the past few weeks we've won the stock-picking lottery (as I've detailed in the "Shoot, I Just Stock Picked" thread in Investor Alley) and our NW has rocketed back up.  I realize this isn't celebrated here in facepunch-land and now that it's getting into real money I'm thinking of selling all but a handful of shares and putting it into index funds.  For the record all money we've been saving for the past year+ has been going into index funds.  However when the stocks take such big leaps they continue to be a big part of our NW (over 30% at this point).  One stock alone (EXAS) has been the source of ~$100k of our gains.

In any event it's been a remarkable run.  This year we are up 28% and since we started this journey on 1/1/2017 we are up 120% in NW.  Perhaps now is the time to jump off the stock picking bullet train before it crashes off the rails?
