Graduated!

My networth was $252,091 on 29-Aug-2014, and is $502,569 on 4-Jan-2017. A little under 3.5 years.

Congrats!!  See you in the next race a few years down the road

Gonna throw my hat into the ring on this thread. It's crazy to go back and see the progress over the years. I came out of grad school in 2010 with $90k in student debt, without a pot to piss in, earning $40k a year. Four years ago this month, I was celebrating a zero net worth after a long period of focusing on attacking the loans. At that time, I decided to refocus my efforts on saving and investing more and to not go as crazy on the loans. Just last week, my personal investment accounts crossed the $250k mark for the first time. And this week, I will be making my final student loan payment. It feels great!

It's a little surreal for me getting to this point. I'm in the camp where it has felt like a big deal. Both of these goals, paying off the student loans and hitting $250k in investments, have been on my mind for so long and now both have been achieved... at practically the same time. I do feel different-- "rich" in the sense that my financial anxieties already seemed to have lessened. I don't feel prisoner to any debt and I have confidence in my nest egg. Now, in my 34th year, my traditional retirement (e.g. 65+) is already taken care of and all efforts moving forward will continue to shave off the years until true financial independence. (Now I know everyone uses their own form of accounting; I'll be following based on my personal investments/retirement accounts--separate from the wife's).

I know its not the end of the month but I am going to call that mission accomplished!!

Moving onwards and upwards.

Roughly 26 months from 250k to 500k.

See you all in the next thread.

Dec 2016: $212k
Dec 2017: $282k

I never would have believed we could increase our savings by $70k in one year. That is incredible. And we didn't have a particularly good year as far as savings rate goes, either. Hoping to put away $50k in 2018!

Dec 2016 - $204k
March 2017 - $301k
June 2017 - $320k
Sept 2017 - $339k
Dec 2017 - $364k

Changed it to quarterly instead of monthly - its more inspiring to see the bigger jumps in the numbers, IMO.  Wow, what a crazy good year last year was.

05/01/2017:  $198,456
05/15/2017:  $200,404
05/31/2017:  $207,044
06/15/2017:  $213,996
07/05/2017:  $219,933
07/17/2017:  $225,853
08/01/2017:  $228,504
08/24/2017:  $228,854
09/01/2017:  $237,500
09/19/2017:  $245,500
10/02/2017:  $251,933
11/07/2017:  $266,000
12/27/2017:  $280,000
The combination of taking a money job at a company notorious for burning out its workers quickly and the getting scary stock market run that you can chalk up to the current POTUS or not has put us well over $100k of savings in a year - something I never would have thought possible!!

01/12/2018:  $300,768

Just took a decent size pay cut in order to get out of NYC and the soul crushing schedule and corporate culture of the aforementioned well paid job, so I'll be putting less into the ol' Vanguard each month - still getting settled in the new HCOL city so we'll see how it stacks up to NYC, which was hella $$$ but after many years of being broke there I knew the tips and tricks to living there frugally......also January NW includes a couple Gs of Crypto that I bought on a late night whim w some friends, so that'll probably go up in smoke fairly soon...
We'll see over the next few months how this life change pans out for the FIRE quest.....

At the beginning of 2017 we were at 243k. At the end of 2017 we were at 386k and now we are at 409k. It is possible, not probable, but possible that we could hit 500k by the end of the year. That would be great, but it would require the market to continue with solid returns.

16th March 2017 - $156,970.56
14th April 2017 - $172,158.80 (+$15,188.24)
18th May 2017 - $187,986.35 (+$15,827.55)
18th June 2017 - $219,742.03 (+$31,755.68) Whatever small amount I had in cryptocurrencies went bonkers 😳
14th July 2017 - $200,846.03 (-$18,896) - Vanguard dropped over 5% and the crypto portfolio dropped 34%. Additionally I paid for house renovation, moving, bond, and prepaid the rent. So the drop may look dramatic but it's really where it was 6 weeks ago. Also I own way more Vanguard units now than during the last update.
17th August 2017 - $228,106.09 (+$27,260.06) - Back on track, although I still have some big expenses coming up in the near future. Hoping to graduate by the end of October 2017.
26th September 2017 - $228,382.36 (+$276.27) - cryptos went down by the same amount as what I saved. I'm done with the big house related expenses now.
13th October 2017 - $256,067.92 (+$27,685.56) - Looks like I'm done here. Markets went back up + I'm back to big savings. My portfolio is pretty volatile due to the crypto exposure so it may come back under 250k at any point of time. Rebalancing would trigger massive tax so I'm leaving it for now. See you in the next thread. Good luck all!
...(moved to 250k->500k thread)
16th November 2017 - $312,757.72 (+$56,689.80) - cryptocurrency doing its thing😳
14th December 2017 - $472,428.34 (+$159,670.60) - over time I got used to crypto doubling every year but doubling every month made me liquidate big part of my portfolio. This went against my investment policy statement but elevated a lot of mental stress. Win. I also worked crazy overtime hours since the last update, keeping spendings low and everything else on track.
19th January 2018 - $437,933.25 (-$34,495.10) - the crypto dip set me back to values from early December. Not complaining.

New guy here just graduated from the last thread

April 28,2017: $253,000

July 7, 2017: $266,000

November 13, 2017: $299,000

January 19, 2017: $326,000

Not bad. $27k in a little over 2 months. $60k in about 6 months. $73k in 9 months. This is the fastest I've ever grown due to some EOY stuff and of course market returns.

wow @SAfAmBrit your numbers are close to ours. though you are outpacing us :P

Something I like doing is keeping track in my tracking a net worth "difference from 12 months ago" column. It's kind of crazy to see... six figure difference in a years worth of net worth. Kind of mind blowing, though saving a boatload worth of stuff helps I guess...

Well...this month has been a bit nuts.

1. Sold our HCOL house. Money was transferred to new location Lawyer to pay off down payment on LCOL house. Closed on LCOL house today. We are getting the difference by close of business today, so I'm counting it.
2. Had to spend a LOT of money this month- moving costs, 1x purchases for new house stuff, travel for moving etc.
3. Organized our finances, trying to get away from having 17 accounts into more manageable buckets- $0 impact, but feels good to have done.

Grand total (cash and investments), as of today Jan 31st at 4 pm:

$499,258

WHAT!!! COMEEE ONNNNNN. Anyone want to loan me $742?

I get paid tomorrow, I promise I can pay you back!!

...
Asides: From the attached spreadsheet if I count housing our net worth seems to have dropped 65k. Some of this is closing costs and property taxes etc. but it seems really high. I'm just going to ignore it. The almost 500k is the number that really matters. In the next thread I'll wipe my housing history and start fresh!

Note, this is household, not individual.

Jan 2017 $368k
Feb 2017 $390k includes 20k windfall from an inheritance.
Mar 2017 $396k
Apr 2017 $398k
May 2017 $404k
June 2017 $408k
July 2017 $415k
Aug 2017 $423k
Sept 2017 $432k
Oct 2017 $440k
Nov 2017 $448k (added in $10k of shares previously excluded)
Dec 2017 $450k
Jan 2018 $460k

Feb 2018 $465k not bad considering my spreadsheet tells me I had a savings rate of -57% this month. Had a few large annual bills come through and income was down due to DH not working much over the school holidays. All expected but makes makes it look like we're off to a bad start for the year.

Thrilled to be joining this thread! I cannot believe how quickly I (now we!) raced from $100k-$250k!

Here is that journey:
4/1/16: $100,869
5/1/16: $104,268
6/1/16: $107,087
7/1/16: $112,489
8/1/16: $118,328
9/1/16: $120,838
10/1/16: $124,626
11/1/16: $126,949
12/1/16: $132,846
1/1/17: $141,336
2/1/17: $145,890
3/1/17: $152,308
4/1/17: $155,552
5/1/17: $160,430
6/1/17: $165,384
7/1/17: $174,224
8/1/17: $175,435
9/1/17: $220,249
10/1/17: $228,472
11/1/17: $237,860
12/1/17: $244,233
1/1/18: $249,568

And on 2/1 we are sitting at $264,304.

January was quite a month in the market! Hard to forecast when we will hit $500k, but I'd hope for somewhere between three and five years.

Note, this is household, not individual.

haha. Thanks for the laugh.

12/1/2017: INV-$256,324.07    NW-$266,011.53

1/1/2018: INV-$265,731.22    NW-$277,837.89
2/1/2018: INV-$286,459.76    NW-$301,344.36

Most of the gains are just market performance.
Last month was horrible and stressful. My cat was diagnosed with aggressive lymphoma 2 weeks ago.  We spent $5000 on hospitalization, chemotherapy, medication, and new food but despite all our effort, he still died yesterday.  Our contractor is surprising us with hidden expenses and additional costs in the last 2 weeks before our house is supposed to be finished but is acting like the charges were already included from the beginning (they weren't) and doesn't understand why we are upset.  He is also performing work without getting our approval/incorrectly and then getting mad at our "last minute changes" when we ask him to correct it.
I feel like I have been in a holding pattern financially and emotionally for the last 6 months and life was finally supposed to be getting better this month.  There's always next month I guess.

Good luck all!
...(moved to 250k->500k thread)

20th February 2018 - $422,637.31 (-$15,295.94) - both the market and crypto dipped. I’ll have no income and very high expenses for the next two months or so. Hopefully it won’t make too much of a dent into my NW.
