December 2013: 142K
March 2014: 178K
June 2014: 191K
September 2014: 205K
December 2014: 231K
March 2015: 232K (I self financed half a wedding this quarter, and began subsidizing now husband)
June 2015: 249K
September 2015: 272K (a new~30K in debt showed in this quarter from the first half of a 60K roof assessment I didn't have cash on hand for)
December 2015: 326K
March 2016: 342K (including some trades that will go through at close of business, I think)

This is definite progress, but it feels a bit unsatisfying, as I've actually paid off ~8K in principal and invested ~20K. 12K has disappeared!  This upcoming month I should pay down 2-3K in interest and invest another 6K, so here's hoping for 352K at the end of April.

Fail!  End of April and I'm at ~345K, despite paying down principal/investing ~8K this month.  Dislike.  Just got to keep saving, I guess.

My husband and I just found out we're expecting so I sort of want to have a mini "by the time you go on maternity leave" goal for ~8 months from now.  I'd say 375K, but I somehow don't think that's in the cards  given recent performance (unless I get my annual bonus by then).

Ended the month @ $303k NW. Could've stretched more, but I actually spent money on hobby supplies.

Came up to $306k NW but most of it was from market gains. Between what we owed Uncle Sam, a new set of tires for the SUV, and work being slow, there wasn't much cash flow.

Update: All figures as of the end of the month.

Nov 15: $250k
Dec 15: $272k
Jan 16: $276k
Feb 16: $299k
Mar 16: $324k
Apr 16: $342k

Not too shabby for 5 months. A summary of what's happened during that time and a few disclaimers:
- I received a large year-end bonus in December, hence the jump in that month.
- In February, company put a big annual retirement fund contribution into my 401k (about $11k), hence a nice jump that month.
- Savings rate in the 65-70% range since the end of November, buoyed some by those two big lump sums which we didn't spend.
- In Dec/Jan we used that bonus and release of some emergency fund to pay off a 10% piggyback mortgage from when we bought a house last June. Yes, yes. We used an 80/10/10 mortgage. We didn't have 20% down. Shame on us. HCOL, very expensive rent, and some fears about real estate taking off (even more than it had been) led us to want to take a bit extra risk. Plus, I knew there was a high chance we could pay the piggyback HELOC off in 1-2 years (it was 6 months, actually). We're happy with where we are and with the decision.
- The fears of real estate taking off weren't completely unfounded. From friends looking for a place, it's gotten even harder than when we were looking, with prices spiking. Zillow seems to agree. Approximately $30k of that increase in NW above is from an increase in Zestimate (it's a full $50k higher now than it was when we bought last June). Based on what I see comparable houses in our neighborhood going for compared to just 6 months ago, I can believe it. We sort of kicked off the buying/selling in the neighborhood. It isn't a gentrifying neighborhood, but I would call it an "old" neighborhood. Many longtime residents with houses starting to turn over, and some new reasons to make the neighborhood desirable for younger folks and families (a couple great new restaurants/bars, a new pedestrian bridge to the train station, and a big new entertainment/restaurant complex finally getting approved about 2-3 miles away). The neighborhood is awesome and way cheaper than most around it, and people are noticing. We love it here. Sorry for the tangent. For consistency, the NW number includes the increase. There's your disclaimer.

The NW increase can be broken down as: +$42k invested assets, -$19k cash (lowered emergency fund sending some to invested assets and HELOC, hence the dip here...we are where we want to be now), +$30k home value, +$40k loan payoff.

Since starting with looking into MMM last February, we're up from $140k at that time to $342k now.

Officially joining this thread! We reached $251,521 this month in our personal investments. This does not include cash, property equity, college savings, or our pensions. At our current savings rate, it would probably take us 3-4 years to reach 500k depending on market fluctuations, but we may change some things on the job front before then. If not, then April 2019 would be good stretch goal.

April 2016  $251,521

I'm in.  Currently at 414k (~700k if you include home equity).  I should be at 500k by December 2016, although with the way Silicon Valley real estate prices are going, it could be much sooner (depending on how you value my 10% stake in an LLC that owns debt/equity in two microbreweries and a large commercial building in Saratoga).

Currently at 433k (758k if you include home equity).

Just sat down and checked everything today: 470k.  So close.  This year has been exceptionally good to us for stock market returns (mostly MO and PM).

jan - $415k stash // $590k NW
feb - $428k stash // $598k NW
mar - $445k stash // $620k NW
apr - $490k stash // $675k NW

+45k to stash this month :-O

Accepted a new job offer since last month and just got the lump sum, +2nd half of bonus, +tax return, +higher pay check.  Also, since we're moving we just had our home value adjusted up (est. $340k, paid $280k).  That's way higher than I expected, but I put it at $320k to stay conservative.  Closing costs will take off $20k at some point in the future, but its fun to watch the artificial spike none the less :)

Assets are breaching $850k... starting to approach the first $1MM milestone.  What a month.

Out of curiosity, what are you all planning on doing next once you reach $500k?  I saw there's a thread for $1 million, but I don't need nearly that much to be FI.  So I don't think that's a goal I really want to pursue, and certainly not one that I want to race to as quickly as possible.

FWIW, I need $625k to be fully FI, though I'm planning to pad that and save some additional money to self-insure for long term care, which brings my ultra conservative total (also discounting SS) up to $800k.  But somehow the closer I get to FI, the less I desire to race there.  Once I reach $500k, I think I want to do some lifestyle engineering and just coast to $800k. :-p

I plan on doing a jig and signing up for the million.
For those whose FI numbers are higher, this is similar to a weight loss challenge at work, I think. It's motivational and everyone wins.

Libertea - throttling back at $500k sounds nice.  You'll be there pretty soon.  Good for you.

I'll be racing past the $500k point to $1M and beyond.  Once $600k liquid is achieved I'll probably pay off the house w/ the next dollars that come in.  Regardless of the math I'd like to be debt free.  $600k and no mortgage basically means shelter and $2k/mo for life.  That will be nice.

Well, my FIRE number is closer to $1.25-$1.5MM, including home equity.  So close to $1MM for stash.  I'm not sure how long the next milestone will take but if I don't set the target to work towards it, I know I won't get there as quickly.

It's cool to see some of the updates in here. I'm still adding at max rate for TSP, spaced evenly throughout the year, and paying back TSP loans, for a total of about $2k/mo (plus match on the new money for a total of almost 30). Not adding any money to the rental partnership, but we plowed our final cash inputs into that big package deal and are now leveraging bank money to make major improvements to about half the properties. It looks like if we can keep expenses low in that arena we will each be building about $1k in equity per month plus $2-300 a piece in free cash flow, which is pretty f'ing phenomenal for only having $20K cash in it over two years and a current stake of $25K or so.
After two years of steadily adding to the real estate portfolio and feeling more confident than ever about market-beating returns, AND hearing a few local acquaintances express frustration about lack of investment options, I'm thinking about founding another rental company with all services outsourced from day 1. My role would be less collaborative and more directive with this one, since I've been around a bit more at this point, and it might be interesting to see how that affects relative success.
My NW is only up about $8K since Dec, but I feel good about things - poised for huge growth and saving more than ever.

March 2014: 167K
March 2015: 280K
March 2016: 360K
May 2016: 385K

This doesn't include an employee pension that I started in August 2015. I am still trying to figure out how to incorporate that into our net worth. I think we should hit 500K in about 2 years.

Yeah that sounds like a good goal.  I don't have a house, so I don't have any debt.  But if and when I do ever buy one, assuming I didn't pay for it in cash, I'd pay it off ASAP to not have to worry about making the payments any more.

I guess part of the issue for me is that I've had some evolution in my thinking from wanting to reach FI as quickly as possible, to wanting to optimize my lifestyle even if it means reaching FI more slowly.  I realized that one of my assumptions here (i.e., that it is desirable to stop working altogether) was likely flawed.  I'm a Type A personality; I don't think I'll be happy not working at all.  And I don't think it's coincidence that so many early retirees (including MMM and ERE) have ultimately gone back to work.  On the other hand, having the freedom to walk away from any job at any time, or to take on short term projects when and if I feel like it instead of having to work X number of weeks per year, sounds pretty good.  Ultimately I think what I really want is more control over my working conditions, as opposed to not working at all ever again.  Hence why I'm looking at FI with career change rather than FIRE now.

jan - $415k stash // $590k NW
feb - $428k stash // $598k NW
mar - $445k stash // $620k NW
apr - $490k stash // $675k NW
may - $503k stash // $687k NW

Thanks for the great motivation & conversation as we work towards this milestone.  I may stick around for another month or so to ensure the market doesn't decide to put me back under but next month's dividends should keep me pretty well insulated.  And then, onto the next milestone of $1,000,000 NW!  My final number is $1.25-1.5MM stash so from that perspective, I'm 1/3 of the way to FIRE.

Could hit both $300k NW and $250k equities next month.

Well that ended up being optimistic. Retirement accounts are still sitting below $250k, right about $242k today. And while our savings rate wasn't too bad, spending was about $9,000 in May (ugh) and the $300k NW milestone will have to wait until next month. Actually, our next two months will be really good income-wise, so we're about to see some big gains.

Oct 15: $247k
Nov 15: $255k
Dec 15: $256k
Jan 16: $241k
Feb 16: $255k
Mar 16: $277k
Apr 16: $290k
May 16: $294k

Well it finally happened. I logged in to Mint this morning and my investments were at $501K. I thought I would hit this at the end of last year. It's felt like an uphill battle. I kept throwing money in, but the number was not going up. I know it doesn't really mean much, but it feels good to hit it. Now on to the next milestone $1M networth.

March Update: I'm adding 2015 quarterly (for comparison) and switching over to a monthly update format for 2016...I think this will make it easier for me to track incremental progress. Year-over-year increase from March 2015 to March 2016 is $102,086 (!)

Dec 2014: $190,811
Mar 2015: $238,653 (+$47,842)
Jun 2015: $262,010 (+$23,357)
Sep 2015: $276,420 (+$14,410)
Dec 2015: $310,350 (+$33,930)
Jan 2016: $307,436 (-$2,914)
Feb 2016: $315,430 (+$7,994)
Mar 2016: $340,739 (+$25,309)

My husband inadvertently just set our $500k NW goal by declaring that he wants to be a "half-millionaire" by his 30th birthday. So, we have until August 2017 to hit $500k in investible NW. Given our current trajectory, I think this is very likely! I'm personally aiming to hit $500k in March of 2017...no math here, just sending good vibes out into the universe.

And a quick NW update, still going strong! Some of the significant increases are due to bonuses - Brown Bear's 6% bonus in April, and then my $5k signing bonus in May.

Apr 2016: $356,946 (+$16,207)
May 2016: $370,408 (+$13,462)

I think we're on track to hit $400k by Brown Bear's 29th birthday in August! Have to wait and see how things go...

Nov 15: $250k
Dec 15: $272k
Jan 16: $276k
Feb 16: $299k
Mar 16: $324k
Apr 16: $342k
May 16: $361k

About $9k was due to home price appreciation, so take it for what it's worth (still including for consistency, and the updated price is closer to in line with what I see houses going for in our neighborhood now). The rest was from investment gains, and a bit of an extra windfall this month with to work stuff. Cash + investments now up to $203k this month from $195k last month (over $200k for the first time since before the down payment on our house last summer!).

I discovered MMM a couple weeks ago,  and ever since have been reading posts, the forum, and puttering around with paper and pen, trying to figure out what I'm doing and how to get where I want to go. (So much to learn! So many questions!) But I figure I should set some goals and track some numbers while I do more figuring out.

So:
May 2016: $267, 040

This does not include my house, which is not yet paid off. I expect it will take me several years to get to $500k but at least I'm heading in the right direction.

April 2016: 345K (so. slow.  investing/paying off between 8 and 10K a month and I'm not sure where it's going!  I think my home's zillow value was skewing my total)
May 2016: 352K Finally, a bit of progress! (includes 5/31 trades that just went in today, and a small increase in home value.

My husband and I just found out we're expecting so I sort of want to have a mini "by the time you go on maternity leave" goal for ~8 months from now.  I'd say 375K, but I somehow don't think that's in the cards  given recent performance (unless I get my annual bonus by then).

I now think my hope from the end of April (above) may actually come through, as it looks like I'll be getting a raise that will give me an extra ~7K post-tax in the back half of the year.  Of course I am bleeding money on prenatal appointments and one size larger clothing, but this should help.

Including my equity has made my path sort of hard to predict, as it's bounced between 585 and 625 over the past year.  I'm also in the 100-250K race without my home equity, but since my real estate is a Manhattan condo that's very easily rented out, I feel like this inclusive measure is a more meaningful reflection of net worth for me.

I also had to file taxes late this year, and hired an accountant.  I have zero idea what my tax liability will be, and will find out this month.  First year married, and got a ~40K raise over 2014, and had huge expenses on my condo (no idea if deductible or capitalized or what).

April 2016 $251,521
May 2016 $266,151

Not bad for our first month! Buoyed by a tax refund and market gains.

I'm so close i can taste it !! if i include home equity.  hoping to hit 500k at the end of the week if stocks cooperate and when my company's final share distributions hit with dividends for this year.  (our accounts get locked and dont appear or i could have seen 500k on PC already)

still sitting around 360k not counting home.  should hit 500k around this time next year invested.

Okay, late to the party, but we're in.

Right now our NW is 325K. Another 100K in home equity not counted.

My goal would be to hit 400K in the next two years.

Fingers crossed!

I'll join.

Not entirely sure how long it took to get to this point. My NW chart in MINT is all screwed up because I removed some old loan accounts (cars, student, mortgage etc) so it basically shows that I didn't move in NW for 2-3 years, when in reality I was paying down debt.... so the first 250 took 2 to 4 years....

Anyway... I'll throw my name in the ring. We save anywhere from 5k to 10k a month, so it could take anywhere from 2 to 4 years for this one as well, judging from my past 2 years, it will land right at about 3, assuming the market doesn't grow or shrink a single percentile in that time (unlikely)

2015 DEC: 252k

Coming back to update....

2015 DEC: 252k (Actual)
2016 JAN: 260k approx
2016 FEB: 281k approx
2016 MAR: 285k approx
2016 APR: 298k approx
2016 MAY: 305k (Actual)

+53k in around 5 months... hoping to save 100k this year but it will be hard. We had a few mega car bills and some home repairs coming.

just hit 500k NW ...

Invested we have 362k... should hit 500k here by around this time next year depending on how some money making schemes work out.

first bump thats above 500 on the chart was artificial due to CC churning.  right now we're actually a little bit higher than 500k due to the same thing CC churning.

We churn credit cards too and more or less, "fly around the world for free twice a year" but I don't count any of that as net-worth, even though if I were to pay cash for those it would cost god-knows (10k+ in some cases per trip). <- I wouldn't pay for the trips, if I had to but it's a pretty low-hanging fruit at the moment.

What are you counting and how?

on a day to day basis on Personal Captial where that chart comes from i may be at any point in Manufactured spending so my total NW could be off by 10k either way.  ie

1. i have just bought a ton of gift cards but they havent worked there way back to my bank account but show on my credit card already - 10k less than what i really have
2. if i'd just bought a bunch on a CC not linked to my PC account and they are in my bank account already. - 10k more than i really have.

i'm not using them in the calculation for actual networth.  they just have an affect on that number in that way.

Ah, I see, we do not do any manufactured spending. Which is where I probably got confused. We spend the money the old fashioned way.

there are a couple cards that equate to 2k per person each in basically free cash in just regular MS without the signup bonus so we run about 50k a year on each of them.

Gross income was the highest it's ever been this month, which was nice. Despite that, we only just crossed $300k NW and $250k investments with this morning's paycheck. Next month will be another good income month but with about $10k in home repairs looming, I'm not expecting a big NW jump.

Oct 15: $247k
Nov 15: $255k
Dec 15: $256k
Jan 16: $241k
Feb 16: $255k
Mar 16: $277k
Apr 16: $290k
May 16: $294k
Jun 16: $305k

Edit: Forgot to mention two things. 1) First time hitting 70% savings rate for a month!, and 2) fuck mint.com.

Hi guys! First post here :)

With yesterdays dead cat bounce and todays paycheck, my SO and I hit a combined $252,000 in investments!

We might be back in the $100k -> $250k Race thread depending on the markets, or we might be going back and forth quite a bit until more contributions bring us here permanently.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
