Currently deployed. Less frequent and predictable updates. Hoping to finish the year over $400k

Net worth consists of equity portfolio, two rental properties, and cash (checking/savings). Liabilities are month-to-month credit card (PIF every month), two mortgages on rental properties, and what’s left of my wife’s student loans.

2020    2021    2022    2023

Oct$290k$399k$412k
Nov$301k$436k$421k
Dec$308k$454k$449k

...and so ends the most painful financial year of my working life.  In addition to the market being way down, several major expenses were incurred in a "when it rains, it pours" exhibit.  Complete HVAC replacement (~$11k), garage opener and main spring replacement (~$2k, we are lucky the door didn't fall on a vehicle/person when that spring broke!), and string of many small things breaking: cell phone, motherboard in my media/security server took a shit, etc. etc.  Water softener is on its last legs too, but shouldn't be as expensive.  But I did get a promotion and significant raise with bonus so that has helped offset some of this year.

Currently deployed. Less frequent and predictable updates. Finished the year over $400k, which was a relief in the current market. Finished up $57k, which is the smallest annual increase I've seen in a bit, but considering that the S&P is down 20% and we were still able to do that, I'm happy. $57k is also more than I made in any year of labor until I was 30, when I came on active duty.

I hit ten years of active service in May, which is the halfway point to a pension. I absolutely love my job, but I'm growing weary of separation from my family. The future looks hopeful, as the more senior I get, the less time I will likely have to spend away. We've got enough saved up now, however, that if things take a turn for the worse, we can do a version of lean FIRE at any point, as long as I go over to the reserves and we move into one of our rental properties. I could get by with doing nothing else, and we would have infinite runway, or add in some work for additional savings or lifestyle inflation.

Net worth consists of equity portfolio, two rental properties, and cash (checking/savings). Liabilities are month-to-month credit card (PIF every month), two mortgages on rental properties, and what’s left of my wife’s student loans.

The first number is retirement related investments, the second is total NW including real estate, cash savings, and other investments. I'm only counting retirement related investments for this race!

December 2019: $292,062 (total NW $423,991)
December 2020: $398,408 (total NW $572,704)
December 2021: $506,167 (total NW $665,639) Graduated for now, hope it holds! (update: didn't hold!)
December 2022: $459,000 (total NW $627,689)

Happy to see substantial progress over 2022 despite the crappy stock market situation.

If all goes as planned, 2023 will be a very different year for me (financially and otherwise), as I intend to quit my job in several months and spend the rest of the year traveling. I'm very ready for a change of pace and scenery, and totally unsure what I'll do after this sabbatical. Looking forward to finding out.

This year is both Ugh and Yay, -3% over last year. The market sucked and we had a few needed house repairs. We did pay off a car & student loans un bulk but that was worth it to me. I took a new job that doubled my salary in Q4 so I am really leaning into 2023 to make up ground.

1/01/21: 203,920 (+76616)
1/01/22: 310,057 (+106137)
1/01/23: 222,527 (-87530)

I have returned, after a pretty wild year that included a lot of big life changes.

The main financial event in 2022 was the combination of finances with my now wife. I will now be considering our combined net worth, which for now means the addition of ~90k of graduate student loans.

With that in mind, I managed to end 2022 slightly ahead of where I started, if the loans are excluded. Not bad considering 2022 was tumultuous from an investment standpoint, contained a move across the country, and involved a wedding ceremony and reception.

Looking ahead, things have stabilized, and we will be using the power of two professional incomes, with no kids, to power forward and get back on track with our financial goals. I hope that I am allowed to stay in this race, having dipped below the floor. Hopefully only temporarily!

Been a wild ride for the last year, and I thought I posted one more time last year but...  Cest la via.  Either way, here I am....  Mostly cause I figured I needed to update my goal and at least do a EOY recording...
Last year I was betting on 590-600k.  I suppose in hind sight, was a bit optimistic, even if things hadn't taken a dive...  So this year Goal is 550-570K.  Not out of reach, but not simple.  Hopefully things stay flat or go up from here but the future.  Well she's(he's?) shy.

Cheer to a new year!  Hope everyone's year is if not prosperous, at least filled with good tidings!

The first number is retirement related investments, the second is total NW including real estate, cash savings, and other investments. I'm only counting retirement related investments for this race!

December 2019: $292,062 (total NW $423,991)
December 2020: $398,408 (total NW $572,704)
December 2021: $506,167 (total NW $665,639) Graduated for now, hope it holds! (update: didn't hold!)
December 2022: $459,000 (total NW $627,689)
January 2023: $494,000 (total NW $649,631) Hope to graduate for the second time this quarter.

Missed the end of Dec update, for the best. My projections have me not hitting September graduation anymore, but leaving the goal post until we get closer. Haven't been dumping into taxable brokerage for the past few months, dumping into high-yield savings instead to work on a down payment fund (Baby number 1 on the way in 3 months!) I don't include my savings in my calc here so slower progress on that front - still nice to see it increasing. Cheers to a great 2023 for everyone!

Greetings from Singapore!

January 2023: $494,000 (total NW $649,631)
February 2023: $483,124 (total NW $655,209)

Hello again!  Looks like last time I posted was Dec 2021 (cue bitter laughter).

I was careful NOT to watch my net worth during 2022--just focused on plowing in contributions instead.  Interestingly, I found that "not peeking" really mattered: the few times I had to log into my accounts, it was still an emotional blow to actually see the numbers.  Even though I was fine with just hearing how much the markets were down (and indeed recognize this as a boon for me as a buyer).  The emotional reaction just doesn't respond to logic. So I will definitely continue not looking!

In Feb I did finally go back and pull all my numbers to update spreadsheets, though, so here those are:

                  2021              2022              2023
Jan $223,873 $309,293 $323,419
Feb $239,134 $302,262 $315,914
Mar $264,278 $311,749
Apr $283,849 $285,760
May $293,311 $287,425
Jun $304,208 $271,762
Jul $308,247 $298,857
Aug $317,756 $291,265
Sep $302,747 $269,919
Oct $319,147 $293,999
Nov $313,668 $313,894
Dec $327,813 $299,457

2022 was a wild year.  I changed career fields, landed my dream job in January, excelled at it, and then lost it in December when the company cut off remote work.  Now I am (reluctantly) searching for a new company.  Being on the FIRE path means no rush to start a new position, which is good for stress levels but bad for procrastination : D

Good to everyone in 2023!

Greetings from Thailand! Still deployed. February was a down month for the market, but we somehow ended up 10k in the black once the dust settled. Savings, rental income, and slightly rising property values more than made up for a marginally off month in equities.

Net worth consists of equity portfolio, two rental properties, and cash (checking/savings). Liabilities are month-to-month credit card (PIF every month), two mortgages on rental properties, and what’s left of my wife’s student loans.

Haven't checked in here since July 2022...and the market has continued to market, showing not much progress despite our continuing to shovel money to 401ks, IRAs and HSA.  Since the last update, we haven't added much more to the brokerage in favor of a paying down our HELOC, taking a spendy vacation last fall, and trying to balance adding some funds to our efund while tech layoffs remain the reality. We should be set to payoff the HELOC in Q2 of 2023 (woohoo!) so will see a shift in funding the brokerage once we feel have our efund back to a comfy level.

Good that you have savings.  Hope you got a decent severance package.

My layoff a decade ago led to me making a whole lot more money at subsequent jobs.  I hope yours does the same for you!

And with that, I'm officially outta here.  See you in the next thread.  Congratulations @runningthroughFIRE @SeattleStache, you're almost there.
Looks like I spoke too soon.  Still, a lot has happened since I last reported in more than a year ago.  Got a new job and moved across the country, and looking to buy a house soon.

12/01/2022:   $278,442 (+$26,777)
03/12/2023:   $297,693 (+$19,251)

$500k goal:  12/31/2024

My goal is going to be tough to achieve.  I've been a super spendy pants and bought a new Tesla :(   We have also spent a good chunk on furniture i.e. $6k, about to install a $31k solar system, and expand our patio for $3200.

Other than retirement investing, most of this year will be used to pay off the car and solar.

I'm not sure I like using my total net worth for the thread......home equity and value of my cars doesn't help me FIRE.  I think once my invested assets are over $250k, I may switch how I track.  Or maybe just report both going forward:

Net Worth/Invested Assets:
3/12/2023: $297,693/$198,857
