Surprised to discover my graduation to this thread held even with the markets doing what they're doing. Time to make it official!

For context: I'm 32 in a HCOL city. I'm married, but these are my own numbers since we keep our finances separate. Includes cash, retirement, and credit cards, which are used for normal expenses and paid off in full every month.

3/19: $83,762.93 (1 year tracking)
8/19: $101,572.33 (graduated to the 100-250k thread)
3/20: $118,287.76 (2 years tracking)
3/21: $206,593.43 (3 years tracking)

6/21: $226,044.45 (+$2,964.08, +1.33%)

I bought a house this month! Also got a nice chunky annual bonus that compensated for the transaction costs and whatnot.  My net worth numbers now show financial assets plus home equity, because I'd be sad if I had to count a five figure transaction as spending and take a giant net worth hit.

My last check-in was when I was a member of the Race to 250k thread in 2018.  Since then I've gotten married, sold 2 houses, bought another and had a kid.  I am at the same job and have received little promotions and solid raises along the way.  I finish my MBA (paid for by work) in October and will have my second kid in November.  I would like to hit the $450k mark this month.

02/28/18 $110,864.47
09/01/2020 $444,020.69  - 300.51% increase (+$333,156.22)

12/2/2021 - $626,411.19 a whooping increase of 41% (+$182,390.50) Looks like it's time to jump into a new thread!

Hi everyone,

New here, but have been reading for a while. Have been tracking my family finances for about a year. I'm pretty confident we can surpass 500K in 2022.

Jan 2021  € 283 387.4
Feb 2021  € 298 090.7
Mar 2021  € 319 116.0
Apr 2021  € 326 564.6
May 2021  € 331 996.4
Jun 2021  € 342 636.1
Jul 2021  € 352 194.8
Aug 2021  € 364 883.6
Sep 2021  € 361 690.0
Oct 2021  € 383 768.5
Nov 2021  € 378 209.7

Big hit this month, and not entirely due to market happenings. I've been spending a lot for school, rent in two cities (I work half the week in one place and study the other half at the other side of the province), plus fuel for travel between them. The term that just finished was a bit more of a scattered experience than I had hoped, but next term is looking far better already. I'm expecting the finances to reflect that. Also, I deleveraged fully yesterday. I was up over $100k on a leveraged investment I did at the bottom of the pandemic, and given my low income this year it felt like the right move to sell now. No effect on the net worth, but good effect on the cash flow, which should help going into next year. See you in 2022!

                    2018        2019         2020         2021
1st Quarter   $85,738  $123,622  $136,279   $283,729
2nd Quarter  $93,359   $133,844  $180,632   $320,910
3rd Quarter  $112,276  $140,745  $209,539   $340,278
4th Quarter  $103,325  $157,203  $253,216   $360,580 (As of Dec. 20th)

In early 2018 at age 42, my 401k balance was a mere $48K (I had a little money in a Roth IRA and traditional IRA, which brought my total to $85K, and that was it). I barely knew anything about investing but was tired of feeling stuck with my finances. Then, I learned about MMM, FIRE, JL Collins, and all the fantastic teachers on this path I wish I knew about much sooner. I devoured everything I could about financial independence, living frugally, retirement, and index investing (JL Collin's blog helped me tremendously with investing). In the fall of 2018, I saved 10K and opened my first brokerage account with Vanguard. In 2019, I began making regular contributions to my 401k. In 2020, I added a 457, and now I contribute monthly to my 401K, 457, Roth IRA, and brokerage account. My goal is to get to $500K ASAP!

I'm going to jump in as I'm trying to keep myself motivated to not slip into old spending habits. I didn't start tracking my NW monthly until a year ago so don't know exact time I crossed $250k mark but would've been mid/late 2019. For purposes of tracking I'm removing 529 accounts and normal checking/short-term savings and only including EF cash, retirement/investment accounts, HSA, and conservative home equity as assets.

Jan 2018: $139k
Jan 2019: $208k
Jan 2020: $262k
Jan 2021: $298k
Current: $366k

We'll see what the markets do but as my income and savings rate have recently increased $500k should occur in early 2023.

Let's try this again with a better table. Wish I could FIRE yesterday! Maybe I'll do a coast/lean fire thing, maybe I'll get a windfall. Maybe the business I have not yet created will take off. No matter what, I'll stay the course.

Thanks! They certainly are close. I've floundered for the past few decades and have been trying to make up for lost time! What helped with my 2020 returns was mostly luck and some planning. In Dec. 2019, before I knew anything about the pandemic, I decided to open a 457 in the coming year to double my retirement contributions, plus move an additional $5k from my CD into my Roth and brokerage account. As luck would have it, I could only access the funds from my CD at the end of March 2020. The crazy volatility that year, and maxing out my retirement plans really helped. Who knows, maybe Omicron will work in our favor? Best of luck to you, and to all of us as we navigate a new year.

Apr2021 — $241104
May2021 — $249275
Jun2021 — $252084

Numbers updated thru the last day of the month.  I forgot a few months and just added them. Downward trend in November wiped out the OCT gains.  But December has me back up there again, so I’m excited about it. 5 trading days left to try to hit the $275k goal. On a side note, my spouse’s  account is around $155k.  So I am hoping to keep those numbers steady (or get a nice Santa Rally bump)

Original goal this year was to hit $230k for the TSP account and $130k for the spouses. Then it was $250k.  At this point; I’m obviously content with the numbers; but I do have a new goal of $275k to round off the year. Closing out at $150k for my spouses account would be nice as well.  Keeping my fingers crossed!

Gonna end the year $5,500 short of the $500k mark.

Hold the fort. Didn't account for dividend payouts in VFORX; those were floating around but not yet reinvested when I checked. I'll have to redo the numbers.

Net worth consists of equity portfolio, two rental properties, and cash (checking/savings). Liabilities are month-to-month credit card (PIF every month), two mortgages on rental properties, and what’s left of my wife’s student loans.

             2019                2020                2021                2022
January$87,000$153,000$241,000-

Annual gain$56,000$89,000$125,000 -

This has been a fantastic year in just about every way. At the start of the year, I hoped to be able to hit $300k. By mid year, my outrageous goal bumped to $350k. Finishing just shy of $360 (and passing it if you count the grand of cash in my safe) is beyond what I thought possible. We put away about $50k, and the remaining $70k was asset appreciation. Starting to hit the tipping point where market gains are outstripping my ability to save money. That’s a nice place to be.

2022 will have a lot of change for us - cross country move, deployment, and new unit. Working out our financial outlook for the new year now.

Let's try this again with a better table. Wish I could FIRE yesterday! Maybe I'll do a coast/lean fire thing, maybe I'll get a windfall. Maybe the business I have not yet created will take off. No matter what, I'll stay the course.

Well, whatever else 2021 was, it was a record year for me financially. I fear 2022 may not be as great -- some substantial house expenses coming up, including a new roof, I suspect (woke up to a leaky ceiling this morning after a night of rain, and my roof is...elderly). But we'll see.

Happy new year to you all!

Happy new year to you all!

I'm sincerely impressed with what you've done. Nearly 500k gain in just four years is amazing, especially considering you started from -170k and weren't able to take advantage of market tailwinds until pretty recently.
